Thanks to the influence of the Korean Wave, the world's interest in K-dramas and K-pop has been sustained for a long time.
The continued popularity of Korean dramas on Netflix and Weibo and the global craze for K-pop, including BTS, can be considered a renaissance of the Korean Wave.
Despite this global interest in Korean culture and Korean life in general, it is still difficult to say that there are sufficient Korean language learning materials that contain Korean culture or everyday Korean conversation.
The dictionaries that learners commonly access only provide knowledge at the 'word' level in terms of structure, and the textbooks are also biased towards written language-centered patterns, making it difficult for Korean learners to learn everyday Korean expressions that frequently appear in actual spoken discourse or dramas.
This book was designed to fill the gaps in these dictionaries and textbooks, providing high-frequency everyday Korean expressions that frequently appear in Koreans' daily lives, selected by drama, in dictionary format.


As the title, “Real Korean Not in the Dictionary for Foreigners 1: Secret Forest, Descendants of the Sun, Goblin,” suggests, the book’s features can be summarized in the following three points.
First, the 100 expressions provided in this book are expressions that frequently appear in K-dramas and are used by Koreans as if they were eating rice, but are not found in existing dictionaries.
The entries in this book are dominated by phrases such as “I’m full,” “I’m dying once, not twice,” “I’m full,” “That’s enough,” and “I’m in a daze,” and therefore are expressions that are not included in existing dictionaries or textbooks.
Second, the vivid Korean expressions provided in this book are comprised of actual examples from recently aired dramas that have received much attention overseas.
The researchers selected three top-rated K-dramas on platforms like Netflix and Weibo, and presented actual expressions and vivid examples from the dialogues in these dramas.
Third, this book was planned with the assumption of being published as a series.
Soon, 『Real Korean Not in the Dictionary for Foreigners 2』 will be published with examples from 'It's Okay to Not Be Okay, Hospital Playlist, and Crash Landing on You.'
Through this series, the writers aimed to help Korean language learners learn Korean language and culture through Korean drama expressions and enjoy K-dramas without subtitles.


The intended readers of this book are, first and foremost, intermediate and advanced Korean language learners who enjoy watching Korean dramas and want to learn Korean frequently used in daily life through them.
Through this book, Korean language learners will be able to naturally acquire various Korean language expressions and culture through the medium of drama.
Through this book, learners will be able to experience not only Korean vocabulary and grammar related to the expressions, but also Korean culture and customs related to discourse situations.
Additionally, teachers who want to teach Korean everyday expressions and culture by utilizing the drama's interesting storyline are also excellent potential readers of this book.
This book can be used as a textbook or supplementary material, and will especially contribute to the teaching and learning of Korean colloquial expressions.

This book was written with the passion of researchers who study corpus linguistics and lexicography and are also passionate fans of K-dramas.
This book came to light through the process of each writer watching, analyzing, and writing about their favorite dramas.
