The Easiest Korean Language Textbook Series
by The National Institute of the Korean Language & Language Education Institute at Seoul National University


Korean through English series was first published in 1992 and has been widely used as educational textbook series for foreign learners of Korean.
In 2012, the new edition of volume 1 was published.
It was designed for beginners who start learning Korean as a foreign language for the first time.
The textbook is to help the learners understand the fundamental system of Korean letters (Hangeul) and acquire basic vocabulary and grammatical items.


In 2013, now, the new edition of volume 2 is published.
It is keeping the major learning objectives as the previous version and meeting new trends and learners' needs.
The textbook targets intermediate learners who should advance their Korean language skills to the upper level.
This is to help learners become more confident in using Korean language with accuracy and fluency.
The current revision has been made by Sang-Oak Lee who wrote the original version and Youngmee Chung at the Language Education Institute of Seoul National University.

Approachable and Organized!

Korean through English 2 consists of 25 lessons.
Lessons 1 through 25 are made up of Vocabulary, Conversation, Grammar & Expression, and Exercise.
Most lessons include “Let's learn about Korea!” section at the end of the lesson.
It is supplement to help learners understand Korean culture more deeply.


In the beginning of every lesson, new vocabulary is accompanied by a short gloss in English.
These glosses provide a general idea on the meaning of the words presented in the following dialogue.


In the conversation section, every effort has been made to provide both realistic and interesting circumstances.
Authors have chosen to focus more on the everyday-life and modern cultural features which the learners are more likely to encounter.


Explanation of the grammatical items and expressions are covered in English.
They are accompanied by examples in both Korean and English to illustrate how they are used in practice.

Exercises give learners opportunity to practice and use the new vocabulary and grammar presented in each lesson.
Also, the cultural columns on Korea are supplements to help learners understand important aspects of Korean culture which might be unfamiliar to most foreigners.


The information on Korea, “Let's learn about Korea,” picks up the theme from the dialogue to enhance understanding of traditional culture and modern society of Korea.

Increased desire to learn Korean


There is more interest in Korean culture, such as Korean dramas, K-pop, and Korean food, than ever before around the world.
Accordingly, the demand for learning Korean among overseas Koreans and foreigners who do not speak Korean as their native language is increasing, and the number of Koreans who want to teach Korean to them is also increasing.
This includes foreign assistants at each university's Korean language education center and students who take free Korean language classes at multicultural centers.

Old pipe is good pipe

There is a saying that those who have more experience or are familiar with something do it better.
The 『Korean Through English』 series is just that.
The first edition came out in 1992 and has already received a positive response from foreigners who want to learn Korean. It has been adopted as a Korean language textbook at a famous Japanese university and has been used for a long time.
It is also used as a Korean language textbook for soldiers and their families at US military bases in Korea.
Published this year following last year, 『Korean Through English 2』 is a revised and expanded edition of that time, translated into language used in everyday life today.
Additionally, it is designed to enhance Korean language application skills through more in-depth vocabulary and grammar study than Volume 1, and to help learners gain confidence in using the language.
The revision was led by Professor Emeritus Lee Sang-eok of the Department of Korean Language and Literature at Seoul National University, who wrote the first edition, and by current instructors at the Seoul National University Language Education Center.


3·3·3 (three expressions, three problems, three chapters)!

When teaching Korean to foreigners or overseas Koreans whose native language is not Korean, the first concern is choosing a Korean textbook.
There are so many textbooks on the market, they all seem similar, and even when trying to choose, it can be confusing because of the many supplementary elements like illustrations and study tips.
And why do all Korean textbooks start with the syllables "giyeok," "nieun," and "diggut"? It's hard to find a textbook that I can recommend to a foreign friend who already understands Korean and can converse in basic Korean, and even tutor them.
『Korean Through English 2』 is the right book to help you solve the above situations.


『Korean Through English 2』 is suitable for learners who have completed Volume 1 or have learned Korean and basic conversation but want to learn the next step.
It is also an appropriate textbook for acquiring conversational skills necessary for daily life and using public facilities, which are the evaluation criteria for the beginner level (level 1-2) of the Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK).
It consists of 25 units, covering topics such as introducing family, describing the weather, buying gifts, and using the post office. Each unit consists of vocabulary, conversation, grammar and expression, and exercises to check what you have learned.
"Let's learn about Korea!", which appears at the end of some units, provides information on Korean culture related to the topic of the text, and is designed to broaden the understanding of Korean culture for foreign and Korean-American learners.


The length of each unit is consistent and short.
'Three expressions (3)' from practical conversations, 'Three problems (3)' to learn and solve expressions, and so each unit ends with 'Three chapters (3)'.
Instructors can learn with less burden, and learners can also learn less from the burden of a large amount of material.
