Book Introduction
King Sejong (1397-1450) was the fourth king of Joseon.
'Great King' is a term used to honor a great and excellent king.
Joseon was a country founded by Yi Seong-gye after destroying Goryeo, and lasted for 500 years.
Yi Seong-gye became the first king of Joseon, Taejo, and his fifth son became the third king, Taejong.
King Sejong, who is introduced in this book, is the third son of King Taejong.
Sejong loved studying from a young age and was upright and generous.
His great character and outstanding abilities made him the greatest king of Joseon.
Sejong believed that the people were the root of a strong nation.
So he ruled the country with a heart that cherished the people.
The role of Jiphyeonjeon, the government office for academic research, was expanded, and talents were selected for government posts based on ability rather than social status.
He also researched farming techniques and discovered new methods to actually help the people's lives.
Not only that, but he also produced many excellent results in various fields such as science, music, and literature.
Among the many achievements that King Sejong left behind, the most outstanding is probably the creation of Hangul.
Sejong began creating Hangul with the heart of loving and helping the people.
Although many scholars at the time opposed King Sejong's idea of creating Hangul, he never changed his mind.
So, eventually, Hangul was created, and today it is recognized as a great writing system in the world.
