manufactured goods soared.\u003cbr\u003e This created a virtuous cycle that fueled China's continued economic growth.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e But this virtuous cycle of growth could not last forever.\u003cbr\u003e As workers' wages rose and globalization progressed, companies began to move to other countries in search of cheaper labor or to install automated systems such as robots, and no longer sought out low-skilled workers. \u003cbr\u003eThe reason these workers are unable to find new jobs and are being ignored by companies is because the Chinese government has neglected to invest in human resources.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e According to a World Bank report, among the 101 countries that were middle-income in 1960, only 13, including Korea, Ireland, and Taiwan, had become high-income countries by 2008.\u003cbr\u003e As of 2015, only about 30% of China's working population had a high school education or higher, a rate significantly lower than the 72% recorded in South Korea, Taiwan, Ireland, and Israel before they transitioned to high-income status.\u003cbr\u003e No country has escaped the middle-income trap with a high school enrollment rate below 50%.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cb\u003eMassive education and health inequalities\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The problem isn't simply that China's workforce is poorly educated.\u003cbr\u003e Looking at the difference in education rates between urban and rural areas, as of 2010, 44% of China's urban workforce had a high school education or higher, while only 11% in rural areas. \u003cbr\u003eThere are also significant differences in the quality of education.\u003cbr\u003e Many rural students attend low-quality vocational schools, and in fact, achievement tests comparing rural fourth-graders across grade levels show that rural fourth-graders lag behind their urban counterparts by more than two grade levels.\u003cbr\u003e With 75% of children under the age of three born and raised in rural areas, there is no choice but to be deeply concerned about China's future workforce and economy.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The urban-rural gap doesn't stop at education.\u003cbr\u003e More than half of newborns in rural areas are malnourished, and 40% of schoolchildren in many communities in southern China have been found to have roundworms in their intestines.\u003cbr\u003e Additionally, more than 30% of rural students (4th grade to 8th grade) have vision problems, but do not wear glasses.\u003cbr\u003e Many rural students are unable to advance to high school due to poverty and cognitive deficits.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eThe book's authors warn that if the Chinese government neglects this problem, workers could be pushed out of the system.\u003cbr\u003e Working in the 'informal sector', outside of state control, means you won't be able to access welfare benefits, and in extreme cases, crime may even
