Into the book
In other words, in order to properly understand the current situation and what will happen in the future, it was necessary to know the underlying mechanisms of similar situations in the past.
For example, events such as the rise and fall of the Dutch and British empires, and the rise and fall of Chinese dynasties, which occurred between 1930 and 1945.
While I was researching these, the COVID-19 pandemic broke out. While there have been similar incidents in history, this was the first time in my lifetime that I had experienced this.
So, studying past epidemics, we realized that natural disasters like diseases, famines, and floods should also be considered.
Because these natural phenomena have a greater impact than any serious economic depression or war.

---From the "Preface"

There are other cycles within the big cycle.
Things like the 100-year long-term debt cycle and the 8-year short-term debt cycle.
Even within these smaller cycles, there are long periods of prosperity and short periods of recession, creating cycles within cycles.

---From the "Preface"

Long-term studies of empires that rose and fell show that historically strong empires typically lasted between 150 and 250 years, although there may be some variation.
And we found that in between, there were big economic, debt, and political cycles that lasted 50 to 100 years.

---From the "Preface"

We are now witnessing a shift in wealth and power, a paradigm shift in world order that will have profound implications for all of humanity.

---「Chapter 1.
From "Big Cycle Overview"

Traditionally, the early stages of a Big Cycle, marked by periods of peace and prosperity, have seen an unequal distribution of wealth, with a very limited number of people possessing and controlling enormous wealth and power.
If such an imbalance persists and a recession hits, hitting the poor and powerless the hardest, a revolution or civil war will occur, creating a new order and starting a new cycle.

---「Chapter 2.
From the “Appendix”

The US is at level 5 by my standards.
This stage is characterized by a poor financial situation and deepening conflicts, but it is still at the forefront of advanced technology and the military industry.
Historically, this stage is the next stage, marked by excessive spending and debt, widening wealth disparity, and deepening political polarization, and precedes revolution and civil war.
However, this does not mean that the United States will inevitably enter the path of destruction and be engulfed in domestic and foreign chaos.
What I'm trying to say is that it's important to pick up the signals properly to understand what's happening now and to anticipate what's coming in the future.
---「Chapter 5.
From "The Big Cycle of Internal Order and Chaos"

Through this book, I hope to discover historical patterns in the Big Cycle and the three cycles that make it up, and gain the wisdom to predict the future.

---「Chapter 6.
From “The Big Cycle of International Order and Chaos”

To understand a country, we must first examine the scale of national power and the big cycle that drives and reflects its rise and fall.
Even when discussed individually, these factors cannot be viewed in isolation; each factor interacts with the other, reinforcing its influence and moving the country through cycles.

Publisher's Review
Shake up our lives
The 'Big Cycle' is still rolling!

A few years ago, Ray Dalio felt a series of massive phenomena unfolding that he had never experienced before.
Of course, it had happened many times in the past, but it was his first experience.

First, the world's three major reserve currency countries printed massive amounts of currency with massive debt and zero interest rates.

Second, the widening gap between rich and poor and the polarization of political values over the past century have led to serious political and social conflicts in various countries (especially severe in the United States).

Third, a new power (China) emerged and challenged the existing power (the United States) and the existing order.

This experience led Ray Dalio to study the recurring 'big cycles'.

And this big cycle is still rolling.
Now the world moves on to the next step.
The United States has begun raising interest rates, which it had been delaying for a long time.
This has shaken the world, and our country cannot escape its influence.
Negative forecasts are pouring in every day, with the US interest rate hike slowing investment and export growth, accelerating domestic interest rate hikes, increasing the interest repayment burden on those who have invested in real estate and stocks, and further exacerbating the hardships of self-employed people already struggling due to COVID-19.

In the last 500 years, in every country
The 'big cycle' has been repeated!

All economics, politics, and history have been repeating themselves.
But people have a hard time imagining something concrete that they haven't experienced themselves.
Even though we know that history repeats itself in certain patterns, it is difficult to believe that such a thing will actually happen in our lifetime.
So, if you had studied the past, you would be forced to make choices and investments that you would never have been able to make.

For example, our fathers' generation, who lived through the Great Depression and World War II, could not have anticipated the post-war economic boom.
Because I have never experienced it.
For them, borrowing money or investing their hard-earned money in the stock market was unthinkable.
So it's understandable that they missed the opportunity to get rich during the boom.
Likewise, it is understandable that people who have only experienced the boom created by debt and have not experienced recessions or wars would borrow a lot of money and invest it, thinking that recessions or wars would not occur.
_In the introduction

Ray Dalio realized that to make foolproof choices and investments, you need to identify recurring patterns.
He has studied the economic, political, and historical patterns and cause-effects of major countries around the world that have recurred over the past 500 years, underlying all wealth and power.
And based on this, we discovered the 'big cycle'.

Coping with the changing world order
Ray Dalio's own principles!

When the cycle changes, people's lives change drastically.
This change could be terrifying, or it could be fantastic.
What is certain is that some kind of change, some life-shaking change, will occur in the future.
But most people overlook this.

The Big Cycle is divided into 1) periods of peace and abundance, with increased creativity and productivity and a vastly improved standard of living, and 2) periods of depression, riots, and war, with the struggle for wealth and power raging and the destruction of things we hold dear, such as wealth and life.

_In the introduction

In addition to the 'big cycle', there are other things like the 100-year long-term debt cycle, the 8-year short-term debt cycle, and even within these smaller cycles, there are other cycles.
So, if we don't study the past properly, we can't get a good sense of what the future will hold.
Because we think that the future that is coming soon will be similar to the past, but we don't know exactly what kind of past it will be similar to.
That is why 《The Changing World Order》 is necessary.
His principles, steeped in rigorous data analysis and Ray Dalio's insights, inform how to act in a changing world order.
It also explains the characteristics of each stage of the cycle, the rulers needed for each stage, and how to delay or gently transition into the declining stage.
The book also addresses the global conflicts that are reaching their peak and entering into decline, particularly the major political and social conflicts within the United States, and the rise of China, which is challenging both the established world power and the new world power.
