A new challenge for Miyabe Literature, which has left its mark on all genres!
Miyuki Miyabe's new short story collection, "I Was Human Until Just Before the Moon Was Hidden by Clouds," has a unique motivation for writing and the nature of the work itself.
Since starting the so-called "Dementia Prevention Haiku Club" in 2012, where participants submit their own haiku and share and learn from each other, Miyuki Miyabe has been fascinated by the world of haiku. The following year, she began to think about giving shape to the rich storytelling of haiku, which consists of 17 syllables.
At the time, ideas such as a novel based on the Haiku Koshien and a novel about a haiku gathering were mooted, but the reason I boldly decided to write a novel titled after a haiku itself was because it was unprecedented.
Thus, twelve novels were born, each titled with phrases containing the four seasons of spring, summer, fall, and winter.
The appeal lies in the diverse genres it encompasses, including an SF depicting a future with advanced medical technology, a fantasy featuring a fruit that never withers, and a horror story about encounters with beings reminiscent of Sadako. However, there are many stories written from the mother's perspective that resonate with the sorrow and pain of women, such as a daughter-in-law isolated by her in-laws, a woman being stalked by her boyfriend, and a daughter being deceived by her cheating husband.
Regarding this collection of short stories, which has demonstrated a new realm of 'Haiku X Novel Collaboration', Miyuki Miyabe included the following request in her 'Author's Note':
“If you first appreciate the haiku that also serves as the chapter title, then read the novel, and finally read the haiku again, you will make new discoveries that are different from those you make after reading the novel.”

A secret place to visit every year.
A family's history as seen from the rapeseed flower observatory.

Author's Note
In the summer of 2012, I came across a book called “Scary Haiku.”
At the time, Edo ghost stories were the main focus of my work, and I was looking into the expression of "horror" in various media with interest. Thanks to this book, I became fascinated by the world of 17-character haiku, something I had never encountered before.
The idea that came to me during that process was to write a short story of about 60 to 80 pages with a haiku as the title.
To title a haiku is not the same as appreciating or interpreting that haiku.
It is quite possible that a short story may contain a story that is far removed from the original intention of the haiku writer.
But it didn't matter, everyone readily agreed, saying they were curious to see what kind of short story my haiku would turn into, so I decided to put this idea into practice.
The 12 works in this first volume are not enough, so I plan to continue with volumes 2 and 3.
I believe I must continue to create with the spirit of haiku, finding attractive colors in familiar life.
Please enjoy it.

I've always admired Miyuki Miyabe, but I've been wondering if she's fallen into a bit of a rut lately. After reading this book, I was impressed by how far she's broken new ground.
The wings of imagination are real exhaust.

I was overwhelmed by the diversity of the stories created based on haiku.
It is a 12-part series with a similar atmosphere to 'Miyuki Suspense Theater', featuring people wrapped in madness centered around the main character.
There are many stories where characters get into trouble because they get caught up in unconventional behavior.
How could you not fall for this? It's scarier when someone you thought was ordinary and kind changes, than when someone who's incredibly strange goes crazy.
Although it had many creepy scenes, it was a book with a refreshing ending.

Mr. Miyabe is a master at writing characters with unavoidable bad personalities or malicious people who make you feel bad.

It's been a while since I've read a contemporary work by Miyuki Miyabe, and I enjoyed reading this collection.
Most of the content is a masterpiece, so much so that I wanted to read it more slowly and enjoy it.
While Miyabe may have thought it was premature to use his own haiku, many fans probably wanted to read works based on Miyabe's haiku, regardless of the completeness of the haiku (excuse me!).
I really hope that in the next volume, you will compete with your own haiku.
