“Some beliefs are not a matter of choice,
“It was a problem I had to hold on to in order to survive.”

The empty belief that it is a 'tank'

About the human struggle to live without faith

The Hankyoreh Literary Award, which was established in 1996 and has been loved by readers for a long time, has published its 28th award-winning work, Tank, including Sim Yun-gyeong's "My Beautiful Garden," Park Min-gyu's "The Last Fan Club of Sammi Superstars," Choi Jin-young's "The Name of the Girl Who Passed You By," Jang Kang-myeong's "Bleach," Kang Hwa-gil's "Another Person," Park Seo-ryeon's "The Air Girl Kang Ju-ryong," and Kang Seong-bong's "Casino Baby."
『Tank』, which won the competition among 229 entries, was selected unanimously by the judges.
The writer, who is well known to us as a 'sound technician' for movies and dramas and has never received separate creative guidance, won this year's Hankyoreh Literary Award for his first full-length novel.
Novelist Lee Ki-ho, who was in charge of the judging, commented, “Without resorting to boasting or exaggeration, this work is the most complete work among the numerous award-winning novels I have encountered in this country in recent years,” and novelist Kim Geum-hee praised it, saying, “It is a novel that advances so quickly and captivatingly that it is hard to believe that it is the first novel by a new writer.”

The title 'Tank' refers to a sealed storage structure, and refers to an empty container left alone on a quiet, deserted hill in a village.
A prayer room of about 5 pyeong (approximately 16 square meters) designed for the miraculous experience of 'believing and praying, and eventually the best will come to me.'
Then one day, a large forest fire breaks out near the 'Sacred Area', the entrance to the forest road leading to the tank, and a man dies inside the tank engulfed in flames.
Why did he, who believed and prayed more sincerely than anyone else for the future he dreamed of, die? Why did he have to die?

"Tank" is a unique "autonomous prayer system" that exists only in space, without a leader or doctrine. It captures the pain of an era addicted to self-reflection, where "faith in society has become virtually impossible," and the struggles of individuals struggling to survive each day.
Literary critic Seo Young-in said that today, more than ever, we need novels that “stay in our hearts and minds, like a tank that holds water and air,” and emphasized that “Tank” “takes great painstaking effort to listen to and write about the voices of people living in this era.”
In addition, novelist Kang Hwa-gil praised Kim Hee-jae's "affectionate gaze toward characters, stable sentences and rhythm, and unique atmosphere and narrative control that lead the novel," making Kim Hee-jae's "Writing Future" even more credible.

Dosun took a deep breath of fresh air.
And as was my habit every time I got off the train, I began to recite the prayer on the postcard.

It all started inside.
The first emotion, the first self, the first world.
Of these, only the first dream unfolded a future outside our world.
Now here we bring the future of our dreams into our hearts.
I believe and pray and eventually the best comes to me.

Into the book
Dosun took a deep breath of the clear autumn air.
And as I always did every time I got off the train, I started reciting the prayer on the postcard out of habit.

It all started inside.
The first emotion, the first self, the first world.
Of these, only the first dream unfolded a future outside our world.
Now here we bring the future of our dreams into our hearts.
I believe and pray and eventually the best comes to me.

--- p.11

The reason Yang-woo recited the history of tanks was because he wanted to talk about a certain 'tank' that was a homonym of 'tank', about the person who told him about the tank, and about his dangerous love with him.
Yang Woo continued his explanation diligently.
“Actually, the word tank refers to something else, um, for example, a water tank, or, um, the air tank that was repaired yesterday….”
--- p.25

It was clear that there was another reason for the decline in reservations and tank community activity since last year.
What is the reason?
Is it because the community isn't promoted enough? Is it because there aren't enough testimonies? Or is there no leader? Honestly, I didn't have much time to think about it.
The most fundamental reason why all these reasons came into play was that the tank was neither here nor there.
People are not stupid.
There is no way I could continue to be seduced by something that is rootless, not a religion, not a deliberate cult that deceives people, not even a self-improvement cult, and is, in fact, nothing at all.
It's called an autonomous prayer system, but where is autonomy in religion?
Isn't autonomous learning the least effective form of learning?

--- p.50

“I will pray with you too.”
The choice and the even words were the best choice Yangwoo could make.
It was a kind of declaration that I would be your absolute supporter, that no matter what anyone says, I would support your path.
But Yang Woo didn't know.
How reckless his declaration was, and what expectations it gave Dumbdub.
(…) When he stood in front of a box-shaped container and saw the container standing in ruins, rusting in the summer humidity, Yang-woo instinctively took a step back.
Yang Woo asked.
"what's this?"
"tank."
--- pp.98~99

Some beliefs are not a matter of choice, but something we must hold on to in order to survive.

--- p.106

People don't believe in their own beliefs, they believe in tanks.
And that is precisely where false worship can begin.
You said that one day people would worship tanks as gods.
He said that maybe all that's left are believers who sit in their tanks and do nothing, praying to become billionaires.
That's when I realized that you didn't trust those who prayed as much as you didn't trust me.
You had no idea how much faith people could have in themselves.
But, Bukyeong, that's not it.
Not trusting people like that is also a habit.

--- p.181

As always, I believe that every future will inevitably become the past, and I continue to write to not lose that hope.

--- p.204

The person I love the most died there.
But it wasn't the tank's fault or that person's fault.
It was a matter of despair that followed when one strongly believed in something and had hope, and it was close to a disaster that those who resisted the world inevitably faced at least once.
So, if disaster strikes you someday, don't panic, but be someone who waits for a while.
Then, the day will come when the future that I have never waited for will come as if I had waited my whole life.

Publisher's Review
“You said that one day people would worship tanks as gods.”
With unparalleled imagination, three-dimensional characters, and a dense narrative
Drawing a giant container in the middle of life

The author majored in film in college and has worked as a 'mixing engineer' for over 10 years, adding sound to and processing various films and albums, which further enriches the story of 'Tank'.
In "Tank," there are people who believe in tanks, people whose lovers believe in tanks, people who built tanks, and people who lost someone in tanks. The author's detailed and sensitive gaze follows their movements without a single gap.
The details of the incident that are gradually revealed along the way and the three-dimensional and thrilling scene transitions make it impossible to take your eyes off the screen, as if you were watching a movie.

The novel is divided into four parts and tells the stories of those who witnessed the tank incident that day.
Part 1 is the story of people who gathered in a tank, each with their own story.
Do-seon, a promising screenwriter who has experienced a long slump and the ups and downs of life after divorce, is fascinated by the tank that comes to him “when he desperately needs it, in the form he most wants to believe in.” As expected, on that day when he looks for the tank, he encounters a thick black smoke billowing out.
Yang-woo, an ordinary factory worker, becomes lovers with Dup-dup, whom he meets on a chat app.
Meanwhile, Yang-woo receives a message from Dupdup, who disappeared without a word after a big fight, and hurriedly visits the tank.
Hwang Young-kyung, who founded the 'Tank Era' after being taught by the first tank founder 'Ruben', and her half-sister and reservation manager Son Bu-kyung also head to the tank after hearing that a large fire is about to engulf the tank.

Ruben laughed.
The moment people start to believe in that space, change begins.
The moment people pray in an empty space, they finally know what they want and discover a new side of themselves they never knew existed.
When the new self you discover in this way leads you into a world you have never set foot in before, from then on anything is possible and you can be anything… … .
Page 65

Part 2 is about the events of 'that day'.
Yang-woo finally arrives at the tank and sees a pale, dead man. Do-seon, who arrived after him, jumps into the tank to rescue Yang-woo, who is holding the body and crying like a madman.
After the 'incident', founder Hwang Young-kyung is arrested, and ominous rumors about a 'container that grants wishes' begin to circulate, and Do-seon repeatedly has dreams of limp hands and feet, rough crying, and a man whose face he clearly knows.
Part 2 also highlights the story of Dupdup's father, Kang Gyu-san. Kang Gyu-san, who was unable to accept his son's identity, ends up facing his son who returns as a corpse.

It was exactly 68 days later that Kang Gyu-san met his child again.
The child was smaller than when I saw him last summer.
The white blanket covering the child did not flutter as before.
I couldn't even hear the child's gasping breathing.
Kang Gyu-san placed his hand on the child's cold instep.
My heart sank endlessly.
There was a phrase I had been mulling over in my head every day for 68 days, but it wouldn't come out of my mouth.
There wasn't a single sentence that remained in my heart.
Page 131

Part 3 is the story of the people left behind after Dudup's death and the new tank.
Dosun begins to write about Dudup's story in order to uncover the mysterious death of Dudup, who believed in the 'future' and 'hope' more than anyone else. Yangwoo happens to read the scenario written by Dosun and decides to meet her.
Son Bu-gyeong asks the village chief where the tank was located to dispose of the burned-down tank on behalf of Hwang Yeong-gyeong, and the chief tells Son Bu-gyeong, who seems resigned, “See you then when something strong comes in.”
How is that possible?
Hwang Young-kyung is in prison, and a new tank is being built here, right on the spot where a person died… … .

Something seemed to be pushing Yangwoo out of life little by little.
Was it like this for Dudup too?
Dopdup was pushed out of life like this, and at some point, he said, "Oh, oh," and was completely pushed out.
Page 174

Part 4 is the story of people waiting for the future outside of the 'tank', perhaps the brightest future that Dudu had been praying for.
Upon hearing the news of the new tank, Son Bu-gyeong realizes that he cannot be Hwang Yeong-gyeong's 'companion of faith' and leaves the house with a lighter. Do-seon, who returns to the sacred area to complete Dudup's story, witnesses another fire.
Even though the new tank was burned down, tanks soon began to sprout up everywhere, and Yang-woo unfolded the last chapter of the scenario that Do-seon had given him to send Dup-dup away.

It seemed as if I could finally understand how life works: an unexpected future suddenly appeared before my eyes, passing through Kang Gyu-san and all of Kang Gyu-san, marching into the past.

"Following the novel, we might call this the 'Age of Tanks.'"
Beyond today's topics such as disasters, queers, religion, and youth issues
A bold and cautiously optimistic narrative of love.

"Tank" is a "religious novel for a godless age" and a "novel about faith."
However, the final chapter of the screenplay written by Dosun, “The Man Who Goes to Matera Every Day,” does not end with simply preaching or defining the fear of “faith.”
'Dubdub', who wished for his identity to be accepted by his loved ones, 'Doseon', who had to write to meet his estranged daughter, 'Yangwoo', who realized that there is a faith that must be held on to in order to survive, and 'Kang Gyusan', who silently lives with the last sentence he wanted to say to his son, are people who prayed "not because they believed in miracles or God, but to speak and hear words of love."
"Tank" masterfully portrays these poor prayer warriors as they ultimately "break through the veil of blind, fanatic cults," boldly advocating for "the cautious optimism that can only be achieved after experiencing the full difficulty of understanding others."

In this way, 『Tank』 willingly “brings the reader of this era, where it is very difficult to know what one wants and achieve it,” “to love.”
The love between Dupdup and Yangwoo, expressed more thoughtfully than any other relationship, gives us a new sense that “only the belief in love can sustain life, and only love can make a solid world a little different.”
The wit of creating the 'most hopeful story' with today's pressing topics and sharp awareness of issues such as disasters, queers, pseudo-religions, and youth issues makes us look forward to the novel world of author Kim Hee-jae, who will be presented after 'Tank'.

■ Author's Note

22.10.10.

… … Yesterday, I went to church for the first time in a long time and many stories came to mind.
A linear story of events and people with no clear structure.
But the word that remains in my mind until this morning is 'tank'.
I want to create a story where everything revolves around this word.

23.01.03.

I was trying to write down my new mindset and expectations for the new year, but my head is a tank.
… … If there is something I wish for, it is not ‘completion’ but ‘discovery’.
I want to discover a direction I've never thought of before.

23.01.27.

Part 3 is being completely rewritten.
I don't know where the story is going.
Still, I hope something beautiful happens while I'm writing.

23.05.01.

It's already May.
I think about tanks all day long.
If there was a real tank, I'd be the first to reserve it.

23.05.16.

Okay.
thank you
