Into the book
Their ignorance of the world was astonishing.
Because their mothers were not in a position to let them do or have what they wanted.
But daydreaming didn't cost money, so they lived in the dream, gathering all the information they could find and feeding their cravings.
The children of Gifford, who seemed to have stepped straight out of a fairy tale and were reckless, were the party itself.

--- pp.69~70

“Um… I want to be a special person.
I don't want to be a mass-produced product.
“I want to have my own individuality.”
Nancy Bell nodded.
It all made so much sense.
The desire to be special.

--- p.82

As children often do when adults act strangely, they escaped into their own world.

--- p.125

He said that the suffering of innocent people was necessary to save the world.
The sacrificial lambs, the powerless and helpless, are the saviors who support and protect humanity.
She couldn't remember exactly what he said.
But as he spoke, I had a strange feeling that I was about to make a great discovery.
--- p.143

You can't be whole alone.
There is no such person.
We are all just a part of the whole.
There is no wholeness in a severed arm.

--- p.219

Blanche replied that today was as good as tomorrow.
I'll remember you forever, even after the party is over.
“Around this time tomorrow we’re having a blast at the cape.
I'm thinking about that here right now.
Someday, in the distant future, we'll think about that party in another place.
So, what I mean is, the same thing happens over and over again in many places for a long time.”
--- p.436

There are only a few bad people, but they are enough to send the rest of us to hell.
You won't believe that a minority can do so much harm to the majority.

Publisher's Review
Recommended by Duna, Kim Yong-eon (Editor-in-Chief of Mysteria)!
A newly discovered classic vintage mystery
A name to remember alongside Agatha Christie and Daphne du Maurier
Margaret Kennedy's first publication in Korea!

The novel by Margaret Kennedy, a bestselling author of the mid-20th century who is being re-evaluated in the Anglo-American literary world, is being introduced to Korea for the first time through Bokbokseoga.
With the recent republication of the author's major works and renewed attention, "What Happened at the Holiday Resort" in particular has garnered the greatest response from contemporary readers, receiving praise for its unique suspense, skillful storytelling that weaves together morality plays, mystery, and comedy, colorful characters reminiscent of character studies, and intricately crafted plot.

A hotel vanished without a trace beneath a collapsed cliff. Who survived?
Friendship and romance, a series of scandals revealed amidst the commotion.
What happened at that summer beach hotel before the disaster?

Summer 1947, Cornwall, a seaside resort in England.
Suddenly, the cliff collapses, burying the hotel located below.
The novel begins with a priest preparing a funeral sermon for the dead, telling a friend stories he has heard from survivors.
And the story goes back to a week before the disaster, and shows what happened during that week through the letters, diaries, conversations, and scenes left behind.
Who died, why did they die, and how did the survivors survive?

The guests and staff gathered at the Fendi Jack Hotel ahead of the summer vacation are all extraordinary.
A selfish nobleman, an indolent sophist, an eccentric priest and his withdrawn daughter, dreamy children, a grumpy housekeeper, a couple each in their own melancholy, a hypocritical girl, a writer pretending to be an artist and her young mistress, and so on.

As soon as they meet, they clash, misunderstand each other, feel jealousy, and feel attraction towards each other, and so on.
As arguments erupt, conflicts erupt, and friendships and romances blossom, the beach becomes abuzz with bizarre commotion as children from two families from different backgrounds come together in their own bizarre ways.
Meanwhile, the time of judgment slowly approaches.
Is this an act of God, an act of force majeure, or a human act?

A three-dimensional portrait of human figures and a lighthearted and sharp exploration of sin and salvation.

First published in 1950, "What Happened at the Holiday Park" is a unique work that, unlike the classic mystery novels featuring detectives and criminals, centers on suspense triggered by the questions, "Who is the dead person?" and "Why did they die?"
Conceived in 1937, this novel, which sought to address contemporary obsessions by portraying the seven deadly sins of Christianity as modern-day characters, ended up reflecting the social atmosphere immediately following the Blitz, including the horror of bombings that indiscriminately destroyed ordinary daily life during World War II, the suffering caused by material shortages, and the existential fear that arose from the instantaneous difference between life and death.
This is an interesting variation in the work through the allegory of a natural disaster.

At the same time, the seven deadly sins of pride, envy, sloth, gluttony, anger, lust, and greed are clearly revealed in the novel, but good and evil are not dichotomously distinguished, and the characters are three-dimensional and colorful enough to be reminiscent of a character dictionary.
Meanwhile, the names of the characters symbolizing the seven deadly sins start with the same alphabet as the sins, so there is also the fun of trying to solve a kind of puzzle hidden by the author.

A combination of wry comedy and classic morality drama, this novel vividly portrays human folly and malice, yet underlying it is the possibility of redemption.
This is a warm expression of Cobb's love for children.
Children who live in extreme poverty without any care, yet show a heart of tolerance and unbiased generosity.
And the story of Mrs. Paley, who was about to give up on life but ended up making a completely different choice due to a relationship at a vacation spot, can also be said to be the spirit that runs through the work.

"What Happened at the Vacation Spot" was loved as a "must-read book for vacation season" or a "good book to read in the summer" when it was republished, so it is a work that can be enjoyed without burden, but the more you ponder it, the richer and more multi-layered its meaning becomes.
