The second original Korean science fiction short story collection by Ken Liu, author of "Paper Menagerie."
Drone warfare, virtual reality.
11 short stories freely crossing genres and settings, including the Imjin War and alien planets.
The third collection of short stories by Ken Liu, one of the most notable contemporary science fiction and fantasy writers, has been published by Golden Bough.
This is the second Korean edition of an original short story collection by Ken Liu, who has secured a large readership in Korea with his masterpiece "Paper Menagerie," which won the prestigious Hugo Award, Nebula Award, and World Fantasy Award for the first time in 40 years. It is a carefully selected collection of unpublished short stories.
This anthology was compiled by Jang Seong-ju, winner of the 13th Yuyoung Translation Award for “Paper Zoo.” In this anthology, Ken Liu presents short stories in various genres such as alternative history, silkpunk, steampunk, and cyberpunk, while utilizing various time periods and materials from the Imjin War and the transition between the Ming and Qing Dynasties to the near future.
During the Imjin War, during Yi Yeo-song's Battle of Pyongyang Castle, a man rode on a gongmyeong lantern and made a great contribution by scouting the enemy from the sky, "North Star"; "Post Human Trilogy", a prequel to the "Singularity Trilogy" that richly imaginatively depicts the transformation of humanity by sending the human mind to the data world and abandoning the physical body; "In the Loop", which deals with the PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) of a drone pilot during war; "Long-distance Cargo Airship", which won the Sidewise Award for alternative history novels - included in the "Record of Movement" section of the May 2009 issue of "Pacific Monthly"; "Even if I Tie Grass, Even if I Bring a Ring", which unravels the Yangju Massacre with two female protagonists; "Cassandra", which deals with superheroes and villains; "The Burden Is Forever on Your Shoulders", which deals with traces of ancient intelligent life on an alien planet; and "The Burden Is Forever on Your Shoulders", which attempts to scientifically explain religious beliefs such as angels and gods. It contains a total of 11 short stories, including "One-Bit Error," which features a male protagonist, and "Ussuri Bear," a steampunk fantasy set in the Japanese imperial era.
"Thank you to all the Korean readers who opened the book I wrote.
I feel that we become most human when writers and readers engage in conversations that transcend time, space, language, and culture.
Because we are a species that makes stories." - From the author's preface to "Somewhere Unthinkable, A Herd of Reindeer" (Ken Liu's original short story collection, Part 1)

Publisher's Review
Near-future science fiction grounded in reality, including drone warfare, digital humans, and carbon trade wars.
The first work included, "In the Loop," deals with the events that occurred as a result of Kaira, who grew up in a broken home due to her father's PTSD as a combat drone pilot, creating a robot to alleviate the PTSD of drone pilots.
Ken Liu captures the rapidly changing nature of modern warfare, including the recent war between Ukraine and Russia being waged as a proxy war using drones, and the various possibilities that may arise as a result in "In the Loop."
The "Postmodern Trilogy" is a prequel to the "Singularity Trilogy" that depicts the transformation of humanity as it sends its mind into the data world and abandons its physical body. "Gods Will Not Die Gentle" is based on a cyber war between early digitalized personalities.
Each digital personality has its own unique ability to either destroy or protect humanity, ultimately leading to a new form of war that was previously unimaginable, such as nuclear war and other real threats to humanity.
With the rapid growth of artificial intelligence and growing interest in digital virtual personalities, Ken Liu's "Posthuman Trilogy" and "Singularity Trilogy" read like a prescient look into the imminent future.
"Long-Range Cargo Airships" depicts a situation in which regulations on carbon emissions from cargo planes were established under the guise of environmental activist demands to protect American domestic producers from Chinese competitors, only to have solar-powered Chinese cargo airships dominate the American skies, offering the author's imagination of what the global trend toward energy regulation might lead to.
Three short stories covering the history of three Northeast Asian countries.
Ken Liu has already published several short stories that have explored various subjects that left deep scars in Northeast Asian history, such as maruta and comfort women during the Japanese imperial era, Chinese people during the American West's development, 19th century Hong Kong through steampunk, and the February 28th Incident in Taiwan, through the genres of science fiction.
In this collection of short stories, one short story each set in China, Korea, and Japan was published.
This collection of short stories includes works that demonstrate the author's continued interest in Northeast Asia, such as "Even if I Tie Grass, Even if I Bring a Ring" which is set in the large-scale massacre committed by the Qing army in Yangzhou, China during the late Ming Dynasty; "North Head" which depicts the Imjin War, the Japanese invasion of Korea, focusing on the Ming Dynasty's Wanli Emperor and Li Rusong, along with the exploits of Yi Sun-sin and the turtle ship; and "The Ussuri Brown Bear" which is set in the early 20th century and features a Japanese doctor and soldier who come to Manchuria to catch the bear that killed their family.
