“Welcome to the place where all imaginations come true, boy.”
A coming-of-age novel that gives courage at the end of a wavering period
The novel "Clover," which gives us the strength to stand firm in a precarious reality, has been published.
This is the story of a boy named Jeong-in, who lives a difficult life, and a demon named Helel, who has disguised himself as a cat, spending a week together.
The story of a 'devil' from hell and an ordinary 'boy' living in Korea, two characters who seem to have no connection at all, is a lighthearted yet captivating work that makes you reflect on how to navigate a life filled with countless temptations.
The book won the 15th Changbi Youth Literature Award, receiving praise from the judges for the Changbi Youth Literature Award, saying, “It is a work that leaves a deep impression on the reader’s mind after reading it, no less than the joy of reading it,” and from the youth judges for the award, saying, “Through the main character, I was able to feel the meaning of life that I had never felt before.”
This work will continue the fun and excitement that 『Wizard Bakery』 『Almond』 『Paint』 『Amusement Park』 gave us.

Into the book
The cat was as black as the night, and it seemed as if it would be indistinguishable from the night when the sun went down.
In other words, the guy can fully see the dark side of the world, but the world cannot see him.
--- p.6
The cat sat leisurely and elegantly on a cardboard box that looked like it had been put out in the cafeteria, basking in the sun and locking eyes with his lover.
Then, as if he could see through Jeong-in's worries, he looked at her intently.
The golden eyes sparkled quite provocatively.
--- p.10
“The lifespan of every human being who has ever lived, is living, or will live in this world is my age!”
“Oh, you’re good at languages, but not at math.
“What can I do when I can’t even count my own age?”
--- p.43
But the devil saw.
Even though I pretended not to notice, my lover's eyes were wavering.
Desire is like a chameleon, quickly changing its appearance depending on the environment and choices.
--- p.78
Even so, I'm just a weak soul, how long can I hold out?
Mongma was right.
The boy's nightmare, a mixture of loneliness, helplessness, and fear, was sweeter than Ortolan.
It will taste good if you let it mature and then bake it.
--- p.89
If you sit here like this, you can see all kinds of things and hear all kinds of stories.
Some people's stories begin at the end of their lives.
Some people start talking from a young age.
Some people don't even realize that the first round has started and end up not even scoring a single point.
I wish you hadn't done that."
--- p.115
“I will make all the flowers you want bloom.
"A four-leaf clover isn't enough? Then I'll give you a clover with five leaves, six leaves, seven leaves... no, ten thousand leaves."
--- p.226
I could find my way home without even asking.
Wherever Jeong-in's feet touched, the road was right there.

Publisher's Review
How much is my life worth?
A black cat appeared while I was worrying
'They say that if you endure it three times, you will be exempt from the reflection paper.' (Page 14 of the text) Even today, Jeong-in thinks that the 'in' in her name does not mean 'person' but 'patient'.
Hyun-Jeong-In, a middle school student who wants to be ordinary but can't be, has to walk slowly in old sneakers.
Jeong-in lives alone with her grandmother, who makes a living by collecting waste paper.
He feels like his life is in a rut.
Unlike the playground where sunlight pours in, the wastepaper basket behind the school where abandoned things rest is Jeong-in's hideout.
One day, Jeong-in encounters a black cat at her hideout.
But this black cat is no ordinary cat.
A cat silhouette was etched on the wall.
The twitching beard, the upturned ears, and the sleek-looking body gradually swell up… … .
…
“Who, who…….”
Jeong-in's mouth fell open.
―Pages 38-39
“If.
“With just those words, you can experience a new world, boy.”
The cat, disguised as a human, introduces itself as the demon 'Helel Ben Shahar'.
Helel is on vacation and says he will stay with his lover for a week.
But of course, rest isn't Helel's only goal.
Helel's specialty is seduction.
And what he wants is his lover's heart.
Helel thought she could easily win the boy's heart by simply teasing his desires and igniting a fire in his wick, as she did with other humans.
Until I realized that this boy wouldn't give a single word.
As the devil snapped his fingers, the cardboard that had been swirling around him folded into shapes and transformed into a David with voluminous curly hair.
“I can make you a king!”
“Oh, a little.
“Don’t crumple the cardboard.” —Page 104
But Jeong-in is still just a teenager, and although he is stronger than others, situations often break him down.
The world makes her hope for good luck for her lover, making it seem as if she has not responded to Helel's temptations until now, and Helel does not miss that moment.
'Clover' contains a proposal that says 'if' you say anything, it will grant you anything you want.
Will Jeong-in finally be able to get her hands on the clover that Helel gives her?
I hope I can live as myself
The courage to walk with calloused feet
Clover is a story about choice.
Faced with the countless choices life presents, can we truly navigate the right path? Or rather, how can we know which path is the right one? This question, with no right answer, is constantly asked by the young Jeong-in.
Back in the day, when her dream was simply to save up a million won, Jeong-in's goal was clear, even if it was trivial.
However, as Helel intervenes in Jeong-in's life and various situations arise, Jeong-in herself ends up not knowing what she wants.
No one can clearly answer the countless and unclear questions.
Jeong-in, who is more susceptible to change as a teenager, finds out after going through a storm.
That among the many paths that can be derived from 'if', there is only one choice, and that it is the choice that must be made by Jeong-in herself, not anyone else.
Having realized this, Jeong-in will walk briskly from now on with feet that are firmly calloused.
Even if the path thus created is difficult, readers of Clover know that Jeong-in will affirm who she is.
The courage of a lover who can look straight into the mirror that reflects herself is admirable.
It's time to step out with him.
“Other than that, there is something I want to do.”
"what?"
"select.
“I’m choosing something.” —Page 76
Among the judges' comments
For those who stand in a world like the tip of a needle, the novel tells them to live the life they want.
This advice may be commonplace, but it doesn't feel that way in this novel.
The story of the protagonist, Jeong-in, begins with a run and ends with a run.
The author's healthy perspective of not objectifying their running is the greatest virtue of this work.
-Judges (Kim Ji-eun, Kim Min-ryeong, Bae Mi-ju, and Jeong Eun-sook)
From the author's words
People say they like people who overcome, but I don't really believe that.
It's okay if you don't overcome it, just do it.
Well, what do you think? There's nothing else to do.
If you do that, it will bloom someday.
Even in the dark, flowers bloom.
