Into the book
For a while, people's attention was drawn to the fact that the criminal was a juvenile, that it was a juvenile murder committed out of passion, and that the suspect was not only unreflective but also confident.
A similar incident from a few years ago has resurfaced, raising the issue of how reckless kids these days are and how lax the laws are in dealing with them.
But like many other incidents, this one was quickly forgotten.
She was a little surprised that the trial was still ongoing.
“At first, he admitted to the crime with a confident attitude.
But then suddenly he started denying that he had committed a crime.
And these days, he doesn't open his mouth at all.
“I’m so tired I could die.”

She sometimes wondered what her 'original' name was.
Do her parents know? Her real name? She struggled to recall the name of the young murderer she'd met with Yoonjong.
What was his name? When she first heard it, she thought it sounded odd for a murder suspect.
Oh, yeah.
Shim Hyo-jeon.
She shook her head.
It was a ridiculous idea.
There was no way a name suitable for a murderer could exist in the first place.
Still, she sometimes thought about genes, blood, and chromosomes.
Innate.
Also about nature or innateness.
I used to fall into such irrational thoughts, absurd and absurd ones.
About luck, probability, and fate.
It was harder to stop such thoughts than to continue them.

She remained silent, unable to fully grasp the meaning of what Detective Jin was saying.
“So, I will continue to call you PD-nim from now on.
But let's be clear about this one thing.
"Do you think, PD-nim, that Shim Hyo-jeon isn't a murderer?" Why was everyone so anxious to ask me that question? She was getting goosebumps.
Detective Jin stared at her intently and then took off his magnifying glasses.
“If you think like that, you’d better stop.
“Because it is an unchangeable fact that he is the culprit.” It was the same thing again.
Then he pushed the two remaining pieces of campagne towards her.
“Eat this at least.
It may not be that tasty, but even a little carbohydrate in the body helps the brain work.”

“Chae Yu-hyung! Chae Yu-hyung, where are you!” The stairs were already at the end.
When he reached the top floor, Detective Jin found her leaning halfway out the window of the hallway, where rain was pouring down.
“Chae Yu-hyung!” Detective Jin threw down the cutter and ran towards Chae Yu-hyung with all his might.
And he grabbed her body from behind with both hands and held it tightly.

Got it, finally.

Publisher's Review
The Lost Forest, the Children Who Once Existed There

"Aren't we pathetic? Do we look like human garbage? You know how people like you think of us? You find me repulsive?" - Page 91

An incident occurs where a teenager brutally murders a peer he was hanging out with.
While searching for a new item, Chae Yu-hyeong investigates the case and interviews other motorcycle riding kids. While doing so, he is surrounded by kids gathered in a remote area of the city and is threatened and assaulted.
Then, a child's suggestion to go to the forest in Euljiro, the forest where flowers were in bloom, provides a clue.
There was no place in the city center where the incident occurred that could be called a forest.
But we have to find it.
Perhaps the forest of Euljiro is not so different from the forest of Vietnam that the person presumed to be Chae Yu-hyung's father experienced.
He too was a child in the unfamiliar forest he experienced, and the group that rode motorcycles and did not hesitate to become suspects or victims might also be the children of that forest that disappeared.
Because the forest may seem different, it will ultimately be the same.
Chae Yu-hyeong, strangely drawn to the forest of Euljiro, uses the power that habitually destroys himself to destroy himself.

Adults Seeking the Forest: The Truth Slowly Revealed

“I decided to investigate the Shim Hyo-jeon case, and I thought it would make me feel better… and I’m going to keep doing it.
“Do you understand what I’m saying?” - Page 130

Next to PD Chae Yu-hyung is detective Jin Kyung-eon with a grumpy expression.
She has no interest in going back to the police station and only has the name of the bakery in her case file.
Detective Jin, who has not been assigned any cases because he tracked down his former junior and partner's corruption to the end, is faced with a situation where everything is a mess, but Chae Hyung-hyung, who is exceptional at picking out bread, appears.
This is how the cooperation between 'two people' drawn by some kind of power begins.
As the two get closer to the truth of the incident, they sense that there is a truth hidden that they do not know.
However, the sharp question facing the truth, “Why?”, does not provide an easy answer.
Every time that happens, Detective Jin takes a bite of bread, chews it, and slowly investigates and organizes the case.
Then, Detective Jin suddenly realizes that the outline of where the forest had gone and what the children had been doing there, which had been difficult to reveal, is slowly coming to light.

The Birth of the Detective Jin Series

-Page 447, from the author's note

"Children of the Lost Forest" is the first work in the upcoming "Detective Jin" series.
This is the starting point of Son Bo-mi's new detective novel, and it is also a declaration of the novelistic method of steady planning and persistent writing that takes a long time.
There are countless breads in the book, and they become the characters of Detective Jin.
Detective Jin is a woman in her late 40s.
He loves carbohydrates and caffeine, and unlike other detectives, he is not very athletic and has poor stamina.
He had a sullen expression and an unfriendly tone of voice.
"Children of the Lost Forest" is the story of Detective Jin reaching out to a young woman struggling with anxiety and obsession.
A narrative of female solidarity is added to the intriguing mystery.
Here, Son Bo-mi's work, "Children of the Lost Forest," casts a unique gaze on the Vietnam War and its descendants, a twist in modern Korean history that we have tried to ignore.

The Detective Jin series will continue.
It could be a collaborative investigation into other cases, or it could be a way to gather together Detective Jin's scattered past.
Whatever it is, Son Bo-mi has just started, and it is sure to make readers feel good.
