The moment you climb the fifth mountain, your own legend begins!
A moving epic about rebuilding shattered hearts and lands.

“Even the inevitable has an end.
But the lesson it leaves behind is eternal.”

The Fifth Mountain (1996), considered the quintessence of the novels of Paulo Coelho, the "Alchemist of the Soul," one of the most beloved authors of our time, whose works have been translated into 88 languages in over 170 countries and have touched the hearts of 320 million readers, is now being published.
Just as he published his representative works, The Alchemist and The Pilgrim, after the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, which was a major turning point in his life, The Fifth Mountain is a work written after the ordeal that decisively changed Coelho's life and the valuable insight he gained from that experience.
As revealed in the author's note, he overcame the difficult times that felt like a long tunnel and moved forward toward his true dream, ultimately rising to become a world-class author.
This novel, which holds a special meaning for the elderly Coelho, who is celebrating the 35th anniversary of his debut as an author, as a beginning and challenge of his youth, is filled with his poignant words, “The unavoidable trials are not a punishment in life, but a challenge.”

"The Fifth Mountain," which adds literary imagination to the story of the prophet Elijah in the Bible, was first introduced in Korea in 1998 as an English translation, but in 2022, Munhakdongne contracted a new translation, faithfully translating the original Portuguese, correcting errors in the old edition, and modernizing the sentences.
Through the story of Elijah, who, despite repeated unexpected trials, did not lose his will and perseverance and moved forward to rebuild his broken heart and land, "The Fifth Mountain" delivers a living message about crisis, frustration, challenge, hope, and true faith. It will greatly resonate and give courage to readers who are tired from the long and difficult crisis of the pandemic.

Into the book
As we go through life, things happen that lead us back to the true path to our own 'myth of self'.
Other things happen that allow us to apply everything we have learned in life.
And finally, some things teach us a lesson.

--- From the author's note

“That was part of the learning.
As a human being moves toward his destiny, there are often times when he must change direction.
And sometimes the external forces surrounding him are so strong that he has to give up and surrender.
“It’s all part of learning.”
--- p.
53

“You cannot answer that question before or during the suffering.
“Only after we overcome a hardship can we understand why it came to us.”
--- p.
68

Freedom is not being swayed by what others say, but only listening to your own heart.

--- p.
125

“Every fight in life teaches us something.
It's the same even if you lose the fight.
When you grow up, you will realize that you have been defending lies, deceiving yourself, and suffering through foolish things.
But if you become a great warrior, you won't beat yourself up over things like that, and you won't repeat the same mistakes."
--- pp.
181~182

“If you feel fear, it means you are attached to life.
“It’s natural to feel fear at some point.”
--- p.
184

“All pain will eventually pass.
“The same goes for the glory and tragedy of the world.”
--- p.

“Fear is something you feel only before the inevitable happens.
“Once something happens, you can no longer be consumed by fear.”
--- pp.
199~200

“If you have an unsatisfactory past, forget it right now.
Imagine a new story for your life and believe it.
Just focus on the moment when you achieve what you want.
Then that power will help you achieve what you desire.”
--- pp.
250~251

“Remember the wonderful things you have done.
Those memories will give you courage.”
--- p.
252

“Children always teach adults three things:
“Being happy for no reason, always being absorbed in something, and clinging with all your might to get what you want.”
--- p.
276

All humans are given a name at birth, but we must learn to choose words that give meaning to our lives and bless them with a new name.

--- p.
281

“The broken walls opened up horizons for our lives and made us realize what we are capable of.
And we finally decided to stop thinking about life and just live it.”
--- p.
305

“Never forget.
“You are much better than you think.”
--- p.
306

“The sadness you read in my eyes is a part of my past life.
But that's a very small part that will disappear in a few days.
(…) If we always move in the direction we want, the sadness won’t last forever.”
--- p.

“When we climb the mountain, neither our glory nor our sorrow becomes great.
Whatever we have gained or lost just remains down there.
“When you stand on top of a mountain, you realize how vast the world is and how far the horizon stretches.”

Publisher's Review
Even in the midst of life, when fierce trials constantly come crashing down,
The strength to move forward without collapsing

In the 9th century BC, the prophet Elijah, a "bringer of God's word," hides in a stable to escape soldiers seeking his life.
King Ahab of Israel, who had married the Phoenician princess Jezebel, was seduced by his queen, a Baal worshipper, and ordered the execution of all those who refused to convert. Elijah was the first to be executed as he was the prophet who delivered God's warning to the king that if Israel worshipped Baal, there would be no rain.
Soon, soldiers sent by King Ahab burst into the stable, and the Levite prophet who was hiding with them was shot with an arrow and fell.
Elijah calmly awaits his death, but the soldier, who is said to be Israel's best archer, continues to aim aimlessly, and eventually, fearing that his mistake may be God's will not to kill Elijah, lets him go and disappears.

The story of "The Fifth Mountain" begins in earnest when Elijah leaves Israel to escape Jezebel's persecution, passes through the city of Kerith, and arrives at the city of Zarephath, which the locals call "Akbar."
Elijah was able to hold on to his will to live and not give up after meeting a raven that brought him food and became an imaginary conversation partner in the hot desert where there was nothing. As God had revealed, he met a woman in the valley at the entrance to Akbar and barely managed to quench his hunger and thirst at her house, saving his life.
However, the fact that he is an Israelite prophet being pursued by Jezebel, a Phoenician princess, becomes known to the people, and misunderstandings and conflicts increase, leading to continued crises.
Akbar's governor and chief priests decide to send Elijah to the top of the fifth mountain, where they believe the various gods they serve reside, and wait there, believing that he will be executed by the fire of the gods themselves.

Elijah, in order to fulfill his divine mission, gave up the work he loved and barely escaped from Israel to Akbar as a prophet, but was swept away by a hardship like a strong current that he could neither avoid nor understand, and eventually stood before the fifth mountain, the greatest ordeal and challenge of all.
As he climbs the fifth mountain, Elijah begins to doubt God's will and falls into deep anguish and despair. However, he finally hears God's will once again from the mountain and returns safely to the bottom of the mountain, surprising everyone watching.

Rebuild your ruined heart
The courage to free myself with a new story of life

The greatest blessing in life is finally realizing the infinite love directed at me.

Elijah returns safely from the fifth mountain, which he thought would be the last in his life, but unfortunately, the suffering and pain in his life do not end.
The Assyrian enemy forces, who had been setting up camp one by one in the Valley of Akbar, gradually increase in number and surround Akbar, and Elijah becomes entangled in the complex and precarious situation of Akbar.
Despite his efforts to negotiate peace, the Assyrians invade, a terrible war breaks out, and Akbar loses the woman he holds most dear, the woman who saved him.

Akbar, devastated by foreign invasion, is reduced to ruins, and Elijah is in danger of losing even his faith in God's love.
Instead of returning to Israel immediately, Elijah begins a new chapter in his life, remaining in Akbar, the place that has brought him so many trials, and begins to rebuild his life in solidarity with the people.
He does not yield to the fate given to him, but pushes forward with his own choices, and eventually realizes God's true intention to make humans into independent beings.
Elijah, who was rebuilding his ruined heart and land little by little, climbs the fifth mountain he had climbed in despair in the past, frees himself, and finally discovers the great and infinite love directed at him.

Rich side stories of religion, politics, history, war, etc.
A story about the most universal and true 'faith'

"The Fifth Mountain" is a novel centered around the story of the biblical prophet Elijah, with Paulo Coelho adding rich side branches through his literary imagination.
Based on the story in chapters 17 and 18 of the first volume of the Book of Kings, the novel may be evaluated as the most religious of Coelho's works, as it cites many passages from the Bible, including Genesis, Deuteronomy, Leviticus, and the Gospel of Matthew. However, it would be correct to understand that the author tried to tell a story about the most universal and true faith and love that can help me stand up straight and not crumble in a moment of crisis.

Beginning with a prologue that briefly describes the political situation and history of ancient Phoenicia around the 9th century BC, the novel vividly portrays the history, religion, politics, and economy of the time, including the invention of paper, the origin and spread of the alphabet, and traders of the time.
In particular, the scene where even the elderly and children help rebuild their homes in Akbar, which was reduced to ruins due to the war with Assyria, to prevent the spread of the plague offers warm comfort to us who are currently in the process of rebuilding after enduring a long pandemic.

Through "The Fifth Mountain," Paulo Coelho conveys to readers the message that rather than viewing the tragedies and trials we face in life as punishment, we should embrace them as opportunities for challenge, and that we should not be discouraged in the face of adversity, but rather move forward step by step toward our dreams and create our own myths.
This strong and warm message, drawn from his own vivid experiences, is conveyed even more dramatically and richly when it meets the voices of characters in the Bible.
