Book Introduction
[Studio Ghibli 3D Architecture Exhibition]

“I am more interested in the people inside the building than the building itself.
The behavior of a person living in water… For example, let's say there's a store on a road that looks like it closed a long time ago, and the building that was built with the sign has a cheap sign with peeling paint on it.
Even though the store is now old and shabby, I think about how excited the owner must have been when he first opened to have lots of customers, and what he must have given to the customers to celebrate the opening.
But the number of customers gradually decreased, and in the meantime, the owner fell ill and closed the store…
If you think about it that way, you can look at buildings with interest, even if they are not grand buildings.
“I’m just lost in my own delusions.” - Hayao Miyazaki -

Publisher's Review
“If you look at the part, you can see the whole.”

Since its founding in 1985, Studio Ghibli has produced numerous animated works.
Numerous buildings appear in the work.
This exhibition will reveal production materials such as architectural background drawings, drawing boards, and art settings that appear in the works, from the starting point [Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind] to the latest work [When Marnie Was There], in order to express the representative buildings in three dimensions and at the same time to understand the origins of their design.
What is the appeal of a building? I believe one of its many charms is its connection to people.
Buildings are an indispensable part of human life.
But the newer buildings seem to have lost their original charm and even seem to be far removed from humans.
It is one of the things that is always closest to us and therefore often overlooked, and can easily be forgotten.

Meanwhile, Studio Ghibli has created countless buildings in the virtual world of animation.
In each work, we have designed unique buildings that become a feature of the story, including the bathhouse, Quartier Latin, Howl's Moving Castle, Manpuku-ji Temple, Kuchōki Bakery, Satsuki and Mei's House, and Laputa Castle.
Its charm doesn't just remain in the world of animation, but remains deeply in our memories, making us imagine that it might actually exist somewhere.

Film, especially animation, must portray the entire world on screen.
In other words, this can be said to be a device that reflects ideals.
Among them are buildings created from imagination.
But it's not just a fantasy.
We carefully observe the real world and then design the characters' lives and times after sufficiently verifying them.
As a result, a deeper relationship is formed with the characters, and the charm of the buildings in the film is further enhanced.

The same goes for the real world we live in.
People live in buildings built to suit numerous cultures and environments.
I hope that the works in this exhibition will provide an opportunity to fully appreciate the charm of buildings, which are closely related to humans.
