With the most modern and cutting-edge writers of contemporary Korean literature
[Modern Literature Pin Series] The 36th novel in the series has been published!
The thirty-sixth novel in the special feature "Modern Literature Pin Series" of the monthly magazine [Modern Literature], which selects the most modern and cutting-edge writers of contemporary Korean literature and includes new poetry and novels, has been published: Yoon Go-eun's "Library Runway."
Since her literary debut in 2003, Yoon Go-eun has established herself as a leading writer in the literary world by boldly and humorously satirizing the absurdities of the real world with her lively imagination. This new work is the author's first full-length novel since becoming the first Asian to win the 'Dagger Award for Translated Mystery Novel' hosted by the British Mystery Writers' Association.
This work, a revised version of the novel published in the November 2020 issue of [Modern Literature], is a mysterious story surrounding the 『Marriage Insurance Policy Collection』 that the author happened to read while tracing the traces of his missing friend Anna. It is a novel that vividly looks into marriage as an act to sustain love forever and life thereafter, making one think about the meaning of love and marriage in this era.

Into the book
If "Night Travelers" was a surprising and terrifying disaster narrative set in a foreign travel destination, escaping reality, "Library Runway" is set against the backdrop of the current global horror, "Corona," and constructs an everyday disaster that has unfolded in our reality right now.
It's, surprisingly, insurance and marriage.
At first glance, these two things may seem unconnected, but the author even slyly hides this joke.
We live in an age where we have to make “wishful wishes like insurance policies” (p. 33), and “it is not surprising that insurance now covers marriage” (p. 84).
So, it would be better to pretend not to win and follow the story.
It's not surprising that the novel now deals with insurance and marriage.
You'll be hooked in no time.
--- From the "Work Commentary"
Anna loved walking among the quiet books.
In the library, where tall bookshelves were lined up like a wall, you couldn't just walk around carelessly.
I had to put my shoes down with the soles, especially the heels, touching the ground for a moment to avoid making a sound.
Similar to sticking post-it notes on the floor one by one.
Anna walked briskly, not burdened by the contact, knowing that her footsteps would not leave a lasting mark on the ground.
--- p.9
Their exact name was AS. AS Insurance.
His sister paid 59,000 won in premiums each month, but even after reviewing the payment details, K doubted the very existence of this insurance. He'd heard of AS Non-Life Insurance, but did this type of insurance really exist? "I'd heard of AS Non-Life Insurance," his sister said, as if reading K's mind.
--- p.74
It has been said that marriage is like a bowl or box in a society.
There are countless human stories that can be captured through marriage.
K agreed with his father, but said that while past marriages were the size of box 5, now they are about box 2.
If marriage today looks different than it did 50 years ago or 30 years ago, it's just that the box is smaller.
He said that because the size has been reduced from size 5 to size 2, there are fewer things that can be put into the box called marriage compared to the past, so only the truly important things can be put in it.
--- p.94
After adultery was abolished in 2015, there were no special measures applied to marriage insurance for the category of “spousal infidelity.”
However, the situation with geese was a little different, as it presupposed a very special situation.
This was a time when couples had to work together and cooperate to educate their children.
It was difficult to make the behavior of geese flying far away to fetch food for their families funny.
The position of Ansim Marriage Insurance was that one-sided sacrifice should not be forced on either spouse.
If the policyholder is one of a couple and can prove that the other person is having an affair, they can receive a certain amount of insurance money if they have signed up for the goose rider.
I was also able to receive counseling for psychological trauma three times.
Tuition and living expenses paid by one party can be subject to insurance claims if the party using them without consultation, or if the party using them engages in behavior that can be interpreted as embezzlement, breach of trust, or misappropriation.

well.
But isn't marriage about choosing the loneliness that comes with living together? I don't think that was unexpected.
So, I don't think the insurance company can cover it.
--- p.109
In an age where someone's breath is a threat, an age where masks must cover both nose and mouth, an age where statistics show that those who wear glasses are less likely to be infected than those who don't, an age where even blowing out birthday candles with your breath is an adventure, an age of social distancing, I couldn't postpone meeting new people, I couldn't doubt them, and I slipped right into them.
And under the moonlight, we kissed as if it were the first time on earth.

Publisher's Review
Does eternal love exist?
Now is the time to get insurance for a safe married life?
The novel "Zero Gravity Syndrome" tells the story of a middle-class family protesting to go to the moon to escape the gravity of alienation in collectivism.
In an era where people have to get used to being alone, the novel collection "A Table for One" vividly depicts a virtual reality created by those who fear loneliness.
A programmer at a travel agency specializing in disaster travel encounters disasters not only in real life but also on trips, satirizing the world where disasters themselves become products. The novel, "Night Travelers."
This is the new full-length novel by Yoon Go-eun, who has received much attention overseas by winning the Daesan University Literary Award, the Lee Hyo-seok Literary Award, the Hankyoreh Literary Award, and the Daegeosang Translation Mystery Novel Award, after publishing four short story collections and three full-length novels, including the short story collection 『If There is Pyongyang in the Blue House』, which deals with the precarious and ambiguous romance poor who lack the passion of those in their 20s and the instability of those in their 40s.
Yoon Go-eun's latest novel, which always delivers an unexpectedly chilling shock through her unique interpretation of reality with her witty banter and fast-paced writing style, is a masterpiece that vividly depicts the dangerous love and friendship of four men and women by placing the formula of marriage as a pledge of eternal love on the standards of a consumer product.
Anna and Yuri, who were once roommates but have grown apart, meet again after a long time.
Anna loves walking down the library aisles like a runway and fills her social media with library runway photos. She even received a proposal at a library, showing her love for libraries.
By chance, he discovers a book of #AS Peace of Mind Marriage Insurance terms and conditions at the local library, and when he learns that the book is being sold at a high price on a second-hand trading site, he tells Yuri about it.
Then one day, Yuri hears from an acquaintance in Anna's book club that Anna has been out of contact for several days. She sets out to find traces of Anna, reminiscing about her memories with her, who was once her best friend but has grown distant due to a man.
Anna borrowed and read the insurance policy book from the same library, and posted a notice on a used goods trading site asking for the insurance policy book, hoping to hear from Anna.
After seeing Yuri's wanted post, she receives a call from 'Joe'.
Through repeated encounters with Joe, a former employee of #AS Insurance Company, Yuri falls for Joe, and around that time, Anna contacts her again as if she had disappeared.
The truth about the peace of mind marriage insurance policy becomes increasingly mysterious, and Yuri becomes obsessed with questions about the entire situation.
Anna and Yuri face the pain and fulfillment of love without relying on the benefits of divorce to comfort their loneliness or the insurance that guarantees lasting love.
This novel satirically depicts how love still exists in an old-fashioned married life even though times have changed, and that what is needed for perfect love is not the institution of marriage, but the courage to love oneself even after a breakup.
Author's Note
What if there was a sound of a page turning every time the seasons changed?
If you change the order of the words, it becomes a completely possible story.
As you turn the page, the seasons change.
As the last page of the novel is turned, the season that had been at a standstill for a while finally begins to flow, and this special experience of thawing is what drives us to continue writing or reading novels.
I often think of a very large book.
A book that is about 2 meters wide and 3 meters tall, and to turn the pages, you have to make large gestures, like walking through a thick curtain.
What a wonderful wind will blow when you turn the last page of that book.
It's a book I can't put in my bag or leave at home, so I only read it in my head, and I haven't reached the last page yet.
I just keep imagining, and writing because I want to touch the wonderful wind.
