A true story novel inspired by the snake murders that rocked Japan.
A sensational and high-calorie mystery!

In 2009, Japan was turned upside down by a series of suspicious deaths that occurred in a metropolitan area near Tokyo.
The suspect in this case, known as the 'flower snake murder case', was a woman in her 30s named Kanae Kijima, who was unemployed and had an unknown address.
She was arrested on charges of extorting over 1 billion won from men she met with the promise of marriage, and then cleverly murdering three of them by disguising them as suicides.
What shocked people was not the heinous crime of serial murder, but the photo of the suspect, who weighed over 100 kilograms, that was released through the media.
It wasn't the image of a 'flower snake' that is generally thought of.
The male victims said they had no suspicion that the woman was a fraud.
Kanae Kijima, identified as the perpetrator of this incident, was sentenced to death in 2017 and is currently imprisoned in the Tokyo Detention Center.
Even while in prison, he created a buzz by running a blog and getting married.
Asako Yuzuki, famous for her "food novels," wrote the novel "Butter," focusing on the fact that the culprit ran a cooking blog and attended cooking classes rather than the incident itself.

Into the book
“Manako Kajii must be incredibly voracious.
You're fat.
That fat guy managed to commit marriage fraud.
“Is it because you’re good at cooking?”
The atmosphere became tense.
Reiko frowned for a split second, almost imperceptibly.
Since ancient times, Rika has been more sensitive to misogyny than anyone else.
However, it is not that Ryosuke said those words out of indifference.
This is the average reaction of men in the world.
The reason this case is getting so much attention is because Gaji, who plays with many men and acts like a queen in court, is neither young nor beautiful.
Looking at the photo, it looks like he weighs over 70 kilograms.
--- p.18-19

“I grew up learning from my late father that women should be generous to everyone.
But there are two things I absolutely cannot forgive.
“Feminists and Margarine.”
Rika smiled awkwardly and muttered, “I’m sorry.”
“Make butter soy sauce rice.
The next time I talk to you, it will be when you have decided never to eat margarine again.
“I only want to meet people who know the truth.”
--- p.38-40

“You really don’t know anything.”
If I'm not mistaken, it sounds like Gaji clicked his tongue.
Her lips were distorted and weak, and the wrinkles on her double chin deepened.
“I enjoy pleasing men.
It's not 'work' like you think.
It is God's mission for women to care for men, support them, and warmly embrace them, and by fulfilling this, all women can become beautiful.
“You could say you could become a goddess.”
--- p.114

“These arms, chest, and butt are all filled with what I like best.
The steak from New York Grill, the sukiyaki from Imahan, and the chaliapin pie from the Daikoku Hotel Gargantua are said to have made this body.
Every time I get sick of the same old meals here, every time I feel like going crazy with the thought of delicious food, I just gently stroke and pinch my body.
“Especially the two arms, they are cold and soft, and when you stick your tongue out and lick them, you can taste a faint sweetness.”
--- p.142

In any case, the more conservative a man is, the more he dislikes the wisdom of a woman who tries to make the space a little more comfortable, and the courage of a woman who changes the environment to her own taste.
But that is precisely the core of the housekeeping skills that men want from women more than anything else.
Why can't we realize this contradiction?
If she were a domestic woman, they would rather conclude that she is a good listener and has no ability to surpass them.
There is probably no field that requires as much talent, egoism, and a certain madness as housework.
--- p.363

“Same reason as you.
One day, they suddenly became incredibly annoying.
“I suddenly began to dislike their faces, the way they seemed to think anything was a given if they just wanted it, the way they sat at the table doing nothing but blankly waiting for the food to be prepared, the way they looked at each other as if it was a given to be treated without any tension.”
--- p.394

“Those people hate it when you talk about things they don’t know.
When I cook a dish they have never tried before, they get anxious and keep their mouths shut.
They only acknowledged what they knew and expected.
“Even if I make boeuf bourguignon and try to explain what kind of dish it is, they stubbornly think of it as beef stew.”
--- p.443

Publisher's Review
A murder suspect's irresistible offer

Weekly magazine reporter Rika is preparing an exclusive interview with Manako Kajii, the suspect in the flower snake murder case that has shocked the nation.
Rather than focusing on the 'gold-snake method' that the world is paying attention to, Rika wants to address the misogyny floating around the incident.
Men who were scammed by Manako Kajii gave large sums of money, saying, “I don’t care if she’s ugly because I live alone and she’ll take care of me in my old age.
He kept making dismissive remarks to her, saying, “Any woman who was good at home would be good,” and the controversy over this incident was escalating into a conflict of opinion between men and women.
However, Gaji, who is imprisoned in a detention center, refuses to be interviewed and is especially cold to female reporters.
Rika actually feels an overwhelming sense of connection with Kajii, despite the social background surrounding this incident.
Everyone is brainwashed by society that women should be thin.
Choosing to live with a fat body requires a lot of determination.
But more than anything, it seems that Gajii is acknowledging that about himself.
Unlike modern people who are overwhelmed by the gaze of others, she was overwhelming others.

Rika finally meets Kajii on the advice of her college friend Reiko, who quit her job after getting married, and receives an offer from her that she cannot refuse.
Every time she goes to visit, she is suggested to taste or cook dishes containing 'butter', and as she carries out these suggestions, Rika's weight increases like a snail.
Rika moves according to the orders of the trapped person.
A strange camaraderie and tension begins to build between these two, reminiscent of the relationship between FBI Agent Starling and Dr. Hannibal Lecter in the film The Silence of the Lambs.

The author's critical view of patriarchy

The tension between reporter Rika and murder suspect Kajii remains tense until the end of the novel.
Although it is a considerable volume of over 500 pages, it is not easy to put this novel down.
If this novel were simply a story about a reporter trying to uncover the truth and a psychopathic killer who manipulates him, it would be no different from any other mystery novel.

The true value of this novel lies in the author's intention in writing it.
Asako Yuzuki has won the hearts of readers with her cookery novels featuring female protagonists, and has solidified her position as an author by being nominated for the Naoki Prize for each of her works. In her signature and bestselling "Ako-chan" series, the author presents a workplace romance (a new term referring to an intimate relationship between women) featuring a charismatic and attractive female boss and a young woman just starting out in society.
The author's unique perspective of encouraging readers with hope was well-received, but it was closer to a workplace fantasy.

But in this novel, Asako Yuzuki does not hide in sweet and safe fantasy.
Uncovers the dark side of patriarchy hidden within Japan's hottest true story.
This authorial approach elevated the novel to the ranks of a masterpiece, and it immediately reached number one on the Japanese bestseller list. Asako Yuzuki painstakingly describes the victims' need for "female care" and the reasons for it, as well as the process of uncovering why Kajii had no choice but to kill and whether he really did.
The author said this in an interview:

“In my work, I have expressed my anger towards a society that demands a lot from and oppresses women.
But I didn't want to end this work with anger.
So what should we do next?
I thought that men should also break free from patriarchy.
This is one of the intentions behind writing “Butter.”

“The famous cooking school the criminal attended was a place to train professional chefs, but it was rumored to be a gathering place for celebrities whose goal was marriage.
It was also noted that she captivated the victim with her 'home cooking'.
“I wanted to dig into the background that made this incident inevitable.”
