A song of desire to be loved
“If you don’t open your heart, you will freeze.”
Nele Neuhaus's new work, "Death to Snow White"
German mystery queen Nele Neuhaus has completed the Sheridan Grant series of mystery romance novels.
Following 『The Girl Who Swallowed Summer』 and 『Endless Summer』, she returns after six years with her new book 『Time of Storms』.
This novel, which begins with a coming-of-age story about youthful deviance, sexual curiosity, life goals, and the search for identity, is also filled with a lush mystery crime story featuring murder, violence, prostitution, rape, police, and serial killers.
Sheridan Grant finally met a doctor he could truly trust and who loved him unconditionally, Paul Sutton, in the idyllic New England town of Rockbridge.
Sheridan is determined to put all the terrible events of her past behind her and start a new life.
But against her will, her heart begins to resist this decision with all its might.
"Time of Storms" travels across the vast heartland and coastal regions of North America, intersecting the daily lives of rural ranches coexisting with nature with the vibrant scenes of the glamorous music industry. It also portrays a woman's series of reflections and choices, the realization of a dream she devoted her soul to, motifs of settlement and wandering, and Sheridan's music through her melody and songs, all together embodying "a song of desire to be loved."
In this series, 'Summer of Life' is like a scorching heat that paralyzes people's reason, swallows everything, and brings endless pain and suffering, and now pushes the protagonist into a huge storm from which he cannot escape once he is swept away.

Into the book
“Oh, this can’t be happening...” I muttered softly and turned my head away.
I couldn't stand the sight of myself in that dress any longer.
“Help me take this off.
“Right now!”
“But still...” Eunice began.
“No, I don’t want to!” I screamed, jumping down from the footstool and ripping my dress.
“No! No! I say no!”
The tailor stared at me blankly, his mouth open.
All I could hear was my own panting and the sound of the cloth tearing.
I finally took off all my clothes and was free.
The tailor stood there, holding the tattered five thousand dollar wedding dress in his hands like a dead white animal.
--- p.19
“I understand that you want to graduate, even though it’s late.” The principal took off his nickel-rimmed glasses and wiped them with a checkered handkerchief.
“But unfortunately, that’s not possible here at our school.
“Mrs. Moore is right.”
“Why not?” I wanted to know.
"It's not my fault that my brother went crazy or that my adoptive mother murdered half the family! This is guilt by association!"
“Sheridan, that had nothing to do with it.
[...] You... ... um... ... had sex with a teacher at our school.
People here were very surprised by that.
Of course, the parents were also shocked!” [...]
The past has caught up with me again.
The lies I had forgotten about fell before my feet with a thunderous sound.
--- p.145
In the past, it was difficult to write lyrics when writing a song, but now it's the opposite.
The lyrics rose up in my head like a story that wanted to be revealed quickly.
I played the melody and tried to match it here and there, then changed it to a minor key, and suddenly everything fit together well.
The sound was beautiful and melancholic, yet sweet at the same time, just as I had originally intended.
[...]
“This is the time of the storm!” I muttered.
“This is the album title!”
A shiver ran down my spine.
I was making songs again after a few months.
Only then did I realize how much I had missed composing.
This was something I was really passionate about, something I really, really wanted more than anything else in life.
--- pp.160-161
“What?” I stopped in my tracks.
“Who are you meeting?”
“Dr. David Harding. FBI profiler,” my brother answered.
“I told you about that person.
“He was the military policeman who accompanied Andrew when he came from Germany to the United States.”
“Why is that person here today?”
“Harding is the head of the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit.
“I’ve spoken with Andrew several times already, and he made our meeting possible today.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked annoyed.
I felt cheated, and had a vague suspicion that Jordan might want something more than just to find out about my mother's past.
--- p.193
“The past won’t let go.
“Right?” I took a sip of tea, feeling depressed.
It tasted bitter as it cooled.
“Sheridan, no one can escape the past,” her father replied.
“You can only make it a component of your life and come to terms with it.
It's best to live here and now and not think too much about the past or what's to come.
“Because we can’t influence either of them.”
--- p.254
“Would you like me to stay here?”
“No,” Jasper answered in a choked voice.
“I don’t want to.
Sheridan, you have to live 'your' life.
“Not my life.”
This is exactly the answer I wanted from him.
A mature answer, even if it may not be entirely honest.
[...] “What if success changes me?”
Jasper turned to me.
“Success and money change everything,” he replied calmly.
“The only way to stop it is to be true to yourself and keep your feet firmly on the ground.
“This is easier said than done.”
I suddenly realized how sad Jasper was right now, and how hard he was trying to hide it.
“Can you promise me that nothing will change between us?” I pleaded with him.
“I can’t do that, honey.” He cupped my face with both hands and tried to smile, but couldn’t.
“All I can say is that I love you more than any woman I’ve ever known.”
--- pp.370-371
“Sheridan, it’s time,” I whispered to myself in the mirror.
“You’ve come to the place you always wanted to come!”
“One minute ago!” Belinda shouted.
“I’m leaving now.” I grabbed a plastic water bottle and walked, downing half of it as I reached the stairs leading to the stage.
Val, Danny, Ray, Alex, JB and I hugged each other and wished each other luck, then led the band up.
I lowered my head, closed my eyes, clenched and unclenched my fists.
Suddenly, everything, yesterday and tomorrow, fell away from me, and only the present remained.
Adrenaline surged through every vein in my body.
I could hear the audience roaring, and a few voices calling my name.
I took another deep breath and ran out.
A dazzling spotlight came and hit me.
This moment felt like falling from an airplane with a parachute.
There was no going back now.
I couldn't stand the sight of myself in that dress any longer.

Publisher's Review
“It was I who brought misfortune.”
Why do you want to be loved and at the same time want to leave it all behind?
The completion of the Sheridan Grant trilogy
The Sheridan Grant series, which combines mystery and coming-of-age fiction, and harmoniously combines thrills and emotion, captivated countless readers immediately after its publication and became a bestseller on Amazon and Der Spiegel in Germany.
In the first installment, "The Girl Who Swallowed Summer," fifteen-year-old Sheridan, the youngest adopted daughter of the Grant family living in Fairfield, a small town in Nebraska in the American Midwest in 1994, discovers her biological mother's diary containing family secrets while escaping the persecution of her adoptive mother and wandering the back alleys.
In the second installment, "The Never-Ending Summer," seventeen-year-old Sheridan flees the scene of her adoptive brother Ezra's brutal murder of his family at the instigation of her adoptive mother, whose diary exposed the conspiracy, and suffers all sorts of hardships until, at the age of twenty, she meets surgeon Paul Sutton, who seems to be the one who can save her life.
The final installment in the series, "Time of Storms," begins by destroying the classic happy ending.
The prequel, which seemed like it would end with 'and they lived happily ever after', did not end as the title 'Endless Summer' suggests.
In 2001, Sheridan, just over twenty and about to get married, finally opens her eyes to 'where she is now'.
A colorful and dynamic series of events that charts Sheridan Grant's journey of coming to terms with reality and truly understanding herself, "Time of Storms," like Nele Neuhaus's other works, boasts a compelling and compelling narrative.
Additionally, the vivid characters that drive the story and the analytical and sophisticated psychological descriptions make the reader reflect on his or her own feelings and a time in the past.
It reminds me of a time, a time when I had to go through a 'stormy' time, unable to control myself in the face of love and success.
The series was conceived as early as 1986, when Nele Neuhaus was traveling in the United States with a friend after completing her university entrance exams.
This journey of my youth, without money, without fear, and filled with curiosity, to learn about the vast lands and people of Europe and other places, became the seed of this novel.
“What I gained from that time in my life was the feeling that if you hold on to your dreams, you can achieve anything.
[...] The story of Sheridan, who never loses sight of his goal despite all the difficulties, was created in my head.” _(From the review)
Works connected to the Taunus series
This novel is also a connected work of two series, including scenes of Dr. Harding's activities during his time at the FBI, which appears in the world-famous mystery thriller series "Taunus Series," including "Death to Snow White," and scenes of serial killer Scott Andrew, the person who led him to the path of a crime analyst.
Sheridan meets Scott Andrew, her mother's murderer, through Dr. Harding's arrangement.
Sheridan later realizes that she was used as bait to get Andrew, who is suspected of committing more murders, to open up.
When Sheridan confronts Andrew, she tries not to get involved with him, but is secretly moved to learn about her mother's life in Germany, especially when she learns that she dreamed of becoming a singer.
As Andrew opens up about his childhood, his crimes, and his confession, Sheridan is horrified by the feeling of something dark and sinister pulling at his soul.
He offers to move to a less restrictive place and negotiate that Sheridan will visit him once a year and tell him about another murder.
“My heart made me repeat my mistakes.”
I stumbled from one person to another in search of love and acceptance, and the more I was hurt, the deeper my despair grew… .
Twenty-one-year-old Sheridan Grant is about to have a grand wedding to surgeon Paul Sutton in the rural eastern town of Rockbridge.
She decided to erase her terrible past and live as a wealthy doctor and the wife of a local leader.
However, when she looks at herself in the mirror while preparing for the wedding, she realizes that this was a huge mistake and runs out of the wedding dress shop.
And right in front of her, she is kidnapped into a car that was waiting for her.
Realizing she is once again in the clutches of the pimp she narrowly escaped months ago, Sheridan desperately tries to escape violence and death, but this incident brings her fiancé Paul to a sharp realization of Sheridan's dark past.
A few days later, Sheridan returns home west with her family and friend, Nicholas, who has come to pick her up after receiving a call from Paul.
Sheridan admits that her desire for approval and love has led her to meet the wrong men.
“It felt good to feel like I was special.
That she is the lover of a huge boss.
“I really believed he loved me.”
“I used to try like crazy to be accepted by everyone, no matter what,” Nicholas answered.
“During my childhood and adolescence, I felt like I didn’t belong anywhere, and that made me angry.
I looked everywhere for the cause of my misfortune.
Except me, that is.

Men from an unknown world approach Sheridan, who has resolved not to give up her dreams for love any longer.
Because of them, Sheridan is once again in the middle of an unbelievable scene… .
“But why don’t you do it properly?” he asked.
“Yes?” I turned back to him in surprise.
“What do you mean?”
“What, music?” He looked at me teasingly.
“I’ve been wondering why a child like you, who can sing, is hiding here.
“There is no one who will come here by chance and find you.” _(from the text)
“Everything is possible now.
“Maybe a new beginning!”
Meanwhile, a music industry mogul named Marcus Goldstein comes to Willow Creek Farm from Los Angeles after hearing Sheridan's high school recordings.
He explains the music business to her while flying her to the recording studio in his private jet and providing her with dazzling in-flight service.
In this way, she begins to slowly approach her dream.
Even in the midst of all that busy work, Sheridan keeps thinking about Jasper, the man who helped her fix her car's flat tire.
Jasper offers to drive twelve hours from Wyoming to see Sheridan home after she successfully completed work on her first album, "Time of Storms," in the recording studio.
Although she's determined not to sacrifice her dreams for another man, Sheridan doesn't want to lose this smart, thoughtful, and charming man.
Facing a journey greater than ever before, who should she trust and who should she not? How much can she trust herself? At a crossroads of constant conflict, will her choices prevent her from repeating the mistakes of the past?
