Keigo Higashino's message to readers as we enter a new era!
As time passes and the world changes, there are things that do not change.

A heart that transcends generations, that's how the past and future connect.

An orphan, unemployed, and currently incarcerated for theft.
Rayto, a young man whose life is truly a mess.
Then, a strange proposal of a lifetime comes to him.
He said he would hire a lawyer to keep you out of jail, but in return, you had to do whatever he said.
The person who appeared in front of Reito, who accepted the offer, is said to be his aunt, whose existence he had not known about until now.
She entrusts him with the task of guarding the 'green tree' at a place called 'Wolhyang Shrine', saying that only Reito can do it.
The zelkova tree is said to be a sacred tree, and many people come to pray there.
But there is something unsettling about the attitude of simply praying.
About a month after starting work, Rayto runs into a female college student named Yumi while on patrol.
Yumi followed her father to find out what on earth he was praying for here.
Reito ends up cooperating with Yumi, partly out of curiosity and partly out of coincidence.

The 2010s have come to an end, and the new 2020s has dawned.
However, utopia has not yet arrived, and far from a golden future, we are faced with deepening social problems such as climate change, the problems of the elderly, gender conflict, the gap between the rich and the poor, and generational conflict.
At this point in time, when many things have clearly changed compared to the past, but equally new issues are emerging, the veteran writer, who is now in his twenties, looks back on the most fundamental values of the older generation.
No one is perfect, and no one can live without regrets, but everyone has a reason for being born and a reason to live, and that reason will somehow be passed on to others.
Even in the seemingly absurd setting of a wish-granting tree, Keigo Higashino demonstrates his masterful skill in persuasively portraying the tree's abilities and the stories of those who wish to convey their feelings to the tree.
As you read about the people who could really be around us and their stories, you will find yourself suddenly touched by emotion somewhere in your heart.

Into the book
As you pass through the thicket, your vision suddenly opens up and a huge monster appears in front of you.
The identity is a green tree.
It is a large tree with a diameter of about 5 meters and a height of over 20 meters.
The thick branches of the tree stretch upwards in a winding, undulating shape, resembling a large, entangled snake.
When I first saw it, I was completely overwhelmed and speechless.
--- p.12

“Yes,” the old woman said with a gentle smile, straightening her back and nodding her chin.
“I am your mother, Michie’s older sister.
Even though they are half-sisters.
“You called me ‘auntie’ earlier, but actually, you’re my older aunt.”
--- pp.35-36

“This is really suspicious.” After hearing the story up to that point, Reito snapped his fingers and said.
“It’s definitely a woman.
I heard you have a lover.
No doubt.
“To take time out of work to have a secret meeting? That’s quite bold.”
--- p.62

“I’ve been wondering this for a while now. Why do you call it a prayer? If you’re making a wish, it’s usually called a wish.”
Well, Rago said, tilting his head to the side.
“It doesn’t matter either way, does it? Origin or commemoration.
There's no difference in meaning.
“I just followed suit because they said it was a commemorative event.”
--- p.70

“Of course I believe in the wisdom of the green tree.
Because I personally felt it.
But I don't know if my wish will come true.
First of all, that is something I cannot do with my own strength.”
--- p.139

I realized anew how important this role, this job of being a guardian of the cedar tree, is.
Furthermore, I was truly grateful to Chifune for entrusting me with this task.
--- p.412

Publisher's Review
“No matter how many times you repair a defective machine, it will break down again.

That guy is also defective… … .
“As you go through life, you will prove that statement wrong.”
