Repetition for Love
Description
Book Introduction
Since his debut in 2010 with [Modern Literature], poet Hwang In-chan has been loved by critics and countless readers for his unique style of writing that shatters existing poetic traditions. His third poetry collection, “Repetition for Love,” has been published. The poet won the Kim Su-yeong Literary Award for his first poetry collection, 『Washing the Old Crowned Crane』 (Minumsa, 2012), published two years after his debut. He then displayed his spirit of ‘confrontation with the history of Korean literature’ in his second poetry collection, 『Heeji’s World』 (Minumsa, 2015), drawing attention as a poet who stands out among contemporary poets. In this poetry collection, published after four years, the poet fully displays the essence of lyricism, which has become much more transparent. The poems, “emptied with cold passion” (Kim Hyeon, recommendation), which carefully observe everyday life and remind us of the value of life and the meaning of existence, leave a deep resonance. |

Poet's words
Into the book
This collection of poems borrows its title from Jeon Bong-geon's first collection of poems, Repetition for Love, published on November 30, 1959.
There is a full 60 years difference, but it was not something I was particularly conscious of or decided on.
Jeon Bong-geon is my favorite poet, but if you ask me why I love him, I have nothing to say.
Reasons always come later.
(…)
I can only think about what I hate, and speak about what I doubt.
But this collection of poems is not made solely of hatred and suspicion.
I met many things, liked them, and those things came together to create this poetry collection.
I express my deepest gratitude for all of it.
Something like love can be given to just anyone.
This was a thought that often came to me while putting together this poetry collection.

Hwang In-chan
--- From "The Poet's Words"
Many thoughts often jumble together.
These days, I sometimes believe I really saw what I saw in my dreams, and sometimes I think I truly love the person I want to kill.
I have many thoughts, many mistakes, and a deep history.
--- From "The Life of the Stage"
I am not the main character of this story.
I'm just a guy who sits on a stump at the village entrance and swears and yells at people.
There is nothing surprising or sad about me. I am not alone on a deserted day listening to the sound of water or doing anything without others knowing.
I became a person who sat on a stump at the village entrance and cursed and shouted at people.
It was from the moment the story began
My role is like an unexpected witness who turns the story around.
I haven't come out since then
--- From "Repetition for Love"
Ah, if you keep writing poetry like this
I'm not a good poet, I know that...
My mom told me to be a good person, but I just let it slide
As if becoming a good poet would bring about some good things
As if not being a good poet is something to be proud of
Just like my mother said, if you just play like that, you won't become a good person. If you just play like that, you'll turn into a cow.
If you can't be a good poet
It has to be a sky
--- From "Yoga Academy"
I wish every good thing you could think of was contained in this poem and you could never escape from it.
If you can call it the future
I wish it were a stone that I could touch
I wish I could throw that stone far out to sea
If you call that slow sinking into the depths of the sea love
I wish there was no love in this poem
--- From "It is a light despair, the god of boredom"
Fragrant lemongrass like green onions
Coriander that resembles mugwort
This poem is about a summer night thought of in winter.
A poem that comes to mind when a cold night comes
It's boiled, sweet and sour, and a great time to eat when you have no appetite.
Play all you can, eat all you can,
Then the poem I love

Publisher's Review
“Every good thing you can think of is contained in this poem.
I hope I can never escape from this poem.”
Hwang In-chan's new work, which everyone has been waiting for, stands out with its exceptional reasoning and sensibility.
A poem that repeats that our poetry is different
A poem that you can never go back to before reading it
Hwang In-chan's poetry, which uses everyday events as its subject matter and uses ordinary, everyday language as raw poetry, always presents a new and rare poetic experience.
This is especially true in this collection of poems, where the breadth of sense and depth of thought stand out even more.
In particular, works that parody poems by Kim Dong-myeong ("My Heart"), Kim So-wol ("Sanyuhwa"), Yun Dong-ju ("Poem Written Easily"), and Hwang Ji-woo ("Even Birds Leave the World"), as well as popular songs and children's songs, are eye-catching, and the fun of finding and reading the hidden verses and lyrics in the poems is unique.
The densely woven, repetitive expressions of words and phrases, and the appropriate use of conversational language are also noteworthy.
The poet writes poetry as if he is confessing.
Faced with the world, I constantly worry about “how to get the words out” and “how to say them” (“The Impossible Wonder”).
The poet says, “I wish that all the good things you can think of were contained in this poem and that you could never escape from it.”
“If you can call it the future” (“It is a light despair, the god of boredom”), in that old future from which one can never escape, and in a world that is “now forever quiet and empty,” one seems to be trying to “endure loneliness” (“Vocabulary”) and repeat the love that has not yet arrived.
In publishing his poetry collection, the poet confesses, “I can only think about things I hate, and I can only talk about things I doubt” (the poet’s words).
However, this does not mean that only feelings of hatred and suspicion toward the world are revealed.
The poets talk about each other's sorrow and pain, think about "the life and death of living things" ("Eternal Nature") and the repetition of life, and talk about "beautiful and peaceful daily life" ("I dipped my feet in the water..."), searching for the essence of simple and truthful moments.
“Play all you can, eat all you can,/and then love poetry” (“Lemongrass, the Ingredients of Tom Yum Kung”) This poetry collection, which shines transparently, is expected to lead the poetry world of the coming 2020s.
