A word from MD
A collection of poems about time spent with dogs
This is a collection of poems about dogs that sing about time spent with them.
The poet says:
Being with a dog means taking care of a life other than your own.
From birth to death, the sparkle of a being permeates me.
As you live together, you come to realize that giving and receiving love can be this simple and certain.
How can you not feel good when you're with a dog like this?

Being with a dog

A poetry collection about time spent with dogs, “I am grateful that I have a dog,” was published by Achimdal.
This collection of poems contains 40 poems and 20 short prose pieces written by 20 poets who live with dogs, including Kim Sang-hyeok, Park Jun, Song Seung-eon, Sim Bo-seon, Ahn Mi-ok, Yu Gye-yeong, and Im Sol-a.
Additionally, a photo of the poet and his dog was included, adding to the emotional impact.

What does it mean to be with a dog?
With the number of companion dogs exceeding 10 million, this question is inevitable for humans today.
Poets answered this question in poetry and prose.
Poet Nam Ji-eun said, “Being with a dog means taking care of a life other than your own.
“From birth to death, the sparkle of a being permeates me,” he said.
Poet Park Si-ha confessed that after spending time with dogs, he “became a poet of dogs” and that “thanks to that, my window through which I view the world became brighter, as if it had a bright-colored filter on it.”
Poet Sim Bo-seon also wrote, “I learned about death and separation while raising puppies,” and “a part of my soul was definitely raised by puppies.”

At this point, wouldn't it be appropriate to call dogs not only humans' oldest friend, but also a "different species of blood relative" with whom they share no blood, and the "first teacher" who first taught young humans about love and separation?

Into the book
Where did we come from? If I ask
You lie on your back with your soft belly out.
It has pink ears with white borders.
Every time you bury your snout in my side
The cave of purity opens wide
I hid the sins I committed from my society there.

Because my society and your society are different
I'm going to be a happy fool holding you
--- From "Park Se-mi, Connection"

To come see me
You who came knocking over too many flower pots
If you keep it in your arms, only the smell remains.
He whined as if he had to go back soon
We often slipped before time.

Do you know what I smell like?
Are we the failed fragrance of some flower?
(sneeze)
--- From "Seo Yoon-hoo, You Are Here"

The dog doesn't know.
Why are you sad today?
But the dog knows.
That you are sad.

The dog doesn't know.
A lot of things you know.

But the dog knows.
There are many things you don't know.

The dog knows.
How much you love your dog.
But the dog doesn't know.
How much you loved your dog.
--- From "Song Seung-eon, The Dog Doesn't Know / The Dog Doesn't Know Knows"

It is said that dogs resemble their owners.
It's better to say that the owner resembles the dog.

An afternoon that bit and let go
Rolling round
Chasing a bird I met while walking
Walking one step ahead of the owner
As time passes, the young dog grows up.
--- From "An Mi-ok, a mess"

Dogs want to have fun without asking a single question.

If I were to write you a poem, what would I write?
You're a funny puppy, but I'm not even a poet, so why do only sad and cold sentences come to mind?

This is probably where the dog wanted the ball to go.
--- From "Yoo Gye-young, We Are Not Sad, But Taste, Love, and Humor"

The names of my dear friend's dogs
If you call them one by one like stars
That calm world that only dogs can see
Spread out like silk
--- From "Yoo Hyeong-jin, The Names of Dogs"

Publisher's Review
puppies, old dogs, rainbow bridges
-From meeting to parting

I met you and I believed I was at rock bottom
That's why it collapsed
Finally I flew up
One step further towards the light
-Part of "Six Little Feet"

A very personal, yet historic first meeting between a dog and a human.
It is a huge collision that will shake two lives.
Who would have thought that a small life that could easily fit on the palm of one's hand would completely turn human daily life upside down?
The chaotic daily life of humans may be confusing in unpredictable ways, but it is also enjoyable in unpredictable ways.
Instead of losing the order they had before meeting dogs, humans are able to rediscover the value of the time they have been given.

When I walk a path that I wouldn't have known on my own
Even when I got drenched in rain that I wouldn't have been able to handle alone
I'm happy with Mary, Unnie
-The "Sign" section

But “time passes and the young dog grows up” (“Mess”).
Human time and dog time flow at different speeds.
One human year is seven dog years.
Dogs that were younger than humans soon surpassed humans.
The dog is growing old by leaps and bounds.
Humans are the first to notice that white hairs unrelated to the dog's pattern appear, movement decreases, and the sensitive nose and ears gradually become dull.
There is a natural sadness that accompanies the anticipation that time is running out with the object of our love.
But if this is the end, if we cannot imagine beyond the rainbow bridge, humans will never be able to love dogs again.

The parting with the dog that the poets sing of is simply “a happy soul passing briskly by flowers and sunlight” going on its own “way.”
“Not looking back” (“The Dog I Don’t Know”).
“Not fearing death” (“The God of Dogs”).
But how can a breakup, a breakup, be so simple?

What we get stuck on is our smell
Because it was a long tremor
I decide not to look for what I lost
You never called my name
The mystery that lies within me

The sunlight wags its tail
Towards the seat where you always sat
You are there
-The "You Are" part

The reason why parting with a dog may not be only painful is because it leaves behind a long-lasting 'sensory memory'.
Even after the dog leaves, the dog's senses remain with humans like jewels in their daily lives.

The dog that used to eat carrots sparingly returns every summer even after leaving, showing its “short tail among the spilled carrots” and giving the expectation that it will “come running from anywhere” when “you say ‘carrot’” (“Carrot”), and the dog that has already been buried in the ground “comes next to me and sighs” and lies down one morning (“I Don’t Believe in Reincarnation”), and eventually becomes a being that “you can see when you close your eyes” (“Fragile”).
The belief that something exists even when it is not there, the feeling that one is alive even after death.
It makes that possible.
This young human who did not know separation becomes “a strong man of loneliness” (from “To Millie”) through the dog.
It is about being able to love dogs, things that are not me, without fear.

Let us not be afraid to step out onto an unknown path, lightly and gently jumping over the boundaries of the lines drawn on the ground.
Let's continue this walk
- "Let's not give up on walking"

It's possible to live together even if you don't know everything.
-Communicating with a dog that doesn't speak

The young dog runs
Bring your shoes and leave them in the middle of the room.
The clouds were all scattered
(……)
Even if you don't know everything a dog thinks
Living together
It is possible
(……)
Dogs grow up to understand their master's thoughts.
Dogs don't mess up the room.
The dog is quiet
The dog waits
- The "messy" part

The history of humans and dogs is immeasurably deep and long.
Likewise, the emotions between humans and dogs may be something that can never be explained through everyday language.
The time with dogs, expressed in forty poems by poets, contains love, faith, friendship, happiness, glory, guilt, longing, sadness, loss, fear, and loneliness.
There are also nameless emotions that can only be reached through the language of poetry.
There is a heart that is so faint that it is not easily visible, but it clearly shines.

What is surprising is that in all these complex and colorful layers of the mind, whether joyful or painful, there is a warmth of the dog.
The body temperature of dogs is one degree higher than that of humans.
Why you can't help but embrace this poetry collection.
Why I can't help but be grateful that I have a dog.
Perhaps it is this warmth.
