Start again, as if today were the first day of your life.
The miraculous wisdom of life, falling drop by drop in the midst of life

Paulo Coelho, one of the most beloved authors of our time, has sold over 140 million copies in 168 countries worldwide.
In 2012, 25 years after publishing 『The Pilgrim』, which tells the story of the 'pilgrimage to Santiago' that led him to become a writer, he returned with a new novel, 『The Accra Documents』.
If the novel "Aleph," published in 2010, depicts a pilgrimage journey of a writer who, at the peak of his career, realizes he is facing a serious crisis and sets out to start over by putting everything down, then "The Accra Documents" can be seen as a compilation of the valuable conclusions Paulo Coelho reached in the process of overcoming his identity crisis.

The Accra Document is a novel that records a conversation between a Jerusalem crowd and a Coptic sage at a time when the invasion of the Crusaders was imminent. Coelho structures the work in such a way that the crowd asks questions and the sage answers them.
Set in a desperate situation on the verge of war, the wise man's answers to humanity's most fundamental and everyday questions are the result of Coelho's deep reflections gained through his turbulent life journey.

Although the work is set in the late 11th century, the everyday grievances and intimate concerns expressed by the Jerusalem crowd in the work are content that can be applied to us living in the modern era.
The everyday and universal fears of humans—defeat, loneliness, anxiety, feeling worthless, an irreversible past, and uncertain success—have not changed much over the past millennia, and the answers given by the wise man in the work are life guidance that will not change over time.

Into the book
What is defeat and what kind of person is a loser?

A loser is not someone who is defeated, but someone who chooses to fail.
Defeat means losing a particular battle or war.
Failure means not going out to fight at all.
We feel defeated when we don't get what we desperately want.
Failure doesn't even give you the chance to dream of anything in the first place.

At the end of defeat, we shake ourselves off and rise again to fight.
But at the end of failure there is nothing.
I'll just live my whole life feeling frustrated like that.
A man who has never lost a fight is unfortunate! He will never be a winner in life.

Love always passes me by.

We are used to receiving as much as we give.
But when it comes to love, you have to give up the expectation that you will receive as much as you give.
Love is an act of faith, not an act of exchange.
Even if love doesn't show up, we must always keep our hearts open to love.
Sometimes loneliness can seem like it's going to destroy everything, but the only way to survive loneliness is to continue to love.
The great goal of life is love.
And the rest is silence.
We love because love sets us free.

Tell me about your anxiety.

With the birth of man, anxiety is also born.
Because it is impossible to completely control anxiety, we must learn to live with it.
Like learning to live with a heavy rain.
Although anxiety is a part of life, we shouldn't let it consume us.
Anxiety will never completely disappear, but it is a great wisdom in life to realize that we can take control of those things that would enslave us and become their masters.

Paulo Coelho returns with a voice of wisdom.

Paulo Coelho, the most beloved author of our time, whose works have been translated into 80 languages in 168 countries and sold over 145 million copies.
In 2012, 25 years after the publication of "The Pilgrim," which tells the story of the "pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela" that led him to become a writer, Paulo Coelho returned with a new novel, "The Accra Documents."
Coelho, who had been writing for over 20 years and had been reaching 100 million readers around the world with a new work every two years, returned to his roots in 2010 with the novel 『Aleph』.
If 『Aleph』 is a work depicting a pilgrimage journey in which Coelho realizes that he has faced a serious crisis at the peak of his career and sets out to start over by putting everything down, then 『The Accra Documents』, his new work published two years later, can be seen as a work that compiles the valuable conclusions he gained in the process of overcoming the identity crisis he experienced.

In November 2011, Paulo Coelho was diagnosed by doctors with heart problems and given little time to live.
However, since Coelho had faced death several times in his youth, the realization that death was not far away was a constant theme in his life, and it also became a stimulus that made him live more diligently.
After undergoing heart surgery, Coelho conceived a new work to share with his readers the wisdom of life he had felt and realized while going through various crises.
Coelho confesses that it took him 64 years (the same as his age) to come up with the idea behind the work, five months to conceive it, and three weeks to write it down.
After overcoming another near-death experience, his new work, "The Accra Documents," is the culmination of Coelho's philosophy of life.

Author Paulo Coelho, who actively communicates with readers through various means such as blogs, Facebook, and Twitter, explained the background of writing “The Accra Documents” in an interview with Brazilian media.

“While communicating with many readers through social media, I have seen people falling into great despair, unable to find meaning in life.
I lived my life thinking that my existence was useless and giving up on my dreams.
“All the stories about fear, anxiety, and so on that this book covers started right there.”

With this in mind, Paulo Coelho has written his new book, The Accra Documents, in which he has written the stories he desperately wants to share with readers around the world.

"The Accra Documents" was translated and published in 37 countries around the world, and like Coelho's other works, it immediately topped the bestseller list.
In the United States, it was on the New York Times bestseller list, and in Germany, it sold 100,000 copies in just two weeks after publication, ranking second on the Der Spiegel bestseller list.
Additionally, each and every sentence in the book, filled with life wisdom, spread across the world in an instant through Facebook, Twitter, and other platforms, deeply resonating with many people.
With his new book, The Accra Documents, Paulo Coelho has once again confirmed that he is the most beloved author among readers across generations, regions, and races.

What is the wisdom of life that will not disappear even after everything is destroyed?
In a moment of crisis, a voice of wisdom miraculously arrives.

So what is this "Accra Document"? In his brief introduction, Paulo Coelho explains the document that formed the basis of his work.

In 1974, British archaeologist Walter Wilkinson discovers ancient documents in Egypt.
Tracing revealed that the document, written in Arabic, Hebrew, and Latin, originated in Accra, a city across the Egyptian border.
This 'Acra Document' records a conversation between a Coptic sage and the people of Jerusalem, just before the start of the Crusades in the late 11th century.

In July 1099, the Crusaders launched an attack on Jerusalem, where Christians, Jews, and Muslims coexisted peacefully.
With the enemy invasion imminent, the Jerusalem crowd gathers in the square without knowing what is happening.
Amidst the confusion of 'must we listen to another sermon about the invaders?', those who cannot foresee their fate tomorrow look at the Coptic sage with eyes full of fear.
But the wise man tells an unexpected story, not a sermon about war as people had expected.

“From now on, as you ask questions, forget the enemies outside and the fears within you.
We need to talk about our daily lives and the challenges we face in them.
Descendants will be interested in such things.
“The world won’t change much in a thousand years.”

Those who heard the Coptic man ask him questions.
Their questions were not about justification or strategy for confronting the imminent invasion.

“What is defeat and what kind of person is a loser?”
“I’m not sure which direction to go.”
“Love always passes me by.”
“I cannot turn back the clock and regain lost time.”
“Why are some people luckier than others?”
“Tell me about your anxiety.”

The difficulties and dissatisfaction felt in daily life, the mysteries of life that cannot be easily solved, the secret doubts that have been kept to themselves… … People who must go to war or leave the city tomorrow morning ask about the meaning of life and its universal values in moments of despair and crisis.

The wise man answers people's questions.
About how to overcome inner fears of defeat, anxiety, loneliness, self-worth, etc., and how to pursue your dreams through love, work, success, and life direction.
The wise man says that even in the difficult situation just before war, it is important to listen to your inner self and live faithfully each day, so that you can live today and share the truth of life that will not change even after a thousand years.

“Blessed are those who hear this story or read it in writing.
“The curtain that was covering your eyes will be torn, and you will be able to see everything beyond it.”

A most Coelho-like work that has reached readers with great strides

The format of the Acra Documents is similar to the ancient Greek philosophical discussions that consisted solely of questions and answers, as narrated by the wise man in the work.
This short work of about 200 pages contains only questions about life's difficulties and seeking wisdom, along with the wise man's answers.
It is clearly different from existing works written in the form of fables or narratives.
This writing style is the most effective for conveying the topics Coelho himself wanted to address and the stories he wanted to share with his readers.

This book is Paulo Coelho in his true form.
Coelho unfolds his story in a concise and direct style, incorporating the reflections he gained from his arduous life journey and the messages he has shown in his previous works, without beating around the bush or hiding anything.
With simple language that readers of all walks of life can easily understand and clear messages grounded in reality, we aim to reach readers one step closer and share life's wisdom with many people.

Paulo Coelho actively communicates with readers through Twitter and Facebook, sharing the joys of each moment and the wisdom of life. However, rather than instant messages that are quickly lost in the flood of social media, he conveys the truth of life to readers in the form of "books" that have been passed down through generations, like the "Accra Documents" that formed the basis of his works, and that have helped Coelho reach where he is today.

Although the setting of the "Acra Document" is the late 11th century, the everyday grievances and intimate concerns expressed by the Jerusalem crowd in the work are content that can be applied to us living in the modern era.
The everyday and universal fears of humans—defeat, loneliness, anxiety, feeling worthless, an irreversible past, and uncertain success—have not changed much over the past millennia, and the answers given by the wise man in the work are life guidance that will not change over time.

The Accra Documents is not a book you read once and put away.
It is a book that you can always keep by your side and read over and over again, savoring each and every sentence.
It is a miraculous life wisdom for those who have lost the meaning and direction of life and feel fear in an age of chaos, and it is a soul-stirring resonance that allows you to discover new meaning and reflect on your inner self every time you read it.
