Book Introduction
If Bae Myung-hoon's previous work was a story about finding the creator god to save the absurd world, this work is a story about people driven to the limit and making a deal with a real devil on the border of life and death.
Bae Myung-hoon's characters pursue a devil more terrifying than Mephistopheles in the Czech Republic, a country created by winter, where everything is covered in white.
A year's vacation given to a killer with 11 years of experience.
When this vacation ends, he must choose whether to remain a killer or disappear forever.
A sudden order from the Black Organization comes to a killer who is on vacation with seven months left.
They say you can just watch a play and tell them what you think, but the organization has never given a directive that didn't involve bloodshed.
And what the killer saw on the stage was Eun-kyung acting as a corpse with such precision and beauty.
“I saw her” means she will be removed soon.
And so the vacation ended.
Kim Eun-kyung, the daughter of a purged power holder.
She plays death on the cold stage of the Czech Republic, a country created by winter, a thin light that could be extinguished at any moment.
The killer takes out the dagger she had sealed to protect the light and hide her from the dark shadow of the Federation.

The Czech Republic, a country created by winter
Into the book
The Federation often mass-produces death.
It's the same in any country.
However, sometimes, there are times when a very small number of deaths need to be custom-made, and not all governments in the world are willing to accept those orders.
Moreover, not every country has traditional technicians who can perform the work from start to finish manually without division of labor.
But there are such people in the Federation.
I am one of them too.
A profession that must deal with the raw, vivid nature of death, unconcealed by division of labor. ---pp. 15-16
Eun-kyung reflected in my eyes.
It wasn't love, it was wonder.
The most wonderful thing I have ever seen since I was born into this world and reached that age.
The boundary where the world we had seen until then changes into a completely different world.
A person like a milestone standing on the border.
If you didn't know about it from the beginning, you wouldn't know, but now that you know that it exists, it's a new stage in life that you can't help but go towards.
So, that feeling was not something that could be replaced with any other name, whether it was love or anything else.
There was only one word in the world that could express that in its original meaning.
Eun-kyung.
The name Eun-kyung itself.
That was it.---p.31
“You think your tastes are your own? You don’t even realize the world has put that illusion in your head.
Anyway, with enough input data, you can figure out things like music tastes, clothing patterns, and even which field agent prefers to kill whom with which knife and at what angle.
You are no exception.
Do you understand what I mean? It's not just about predicting behavior, it's about being able to perceive existence.
“There is no need to even attempt a profound analysis of your inner self.” ---p.60
When rumors began to circulate that the Federation was creating demons, most people assumed it was a metaphor.
I believed that it meant that power was being corrupted in unethical ways that no normal country would dare to contemplate.
But that wasn't true.
(Omitted) But at least one thing was clear.
Whatever it is, it is not a metaphor or a symbol, but something with substance.
The basis for that judgment was simpler and clearer than I thought.
The budget was being executed. ---p.88
“When a knight charges into enemy territory on the battlefield, he can only carry one spear.
Carrying two doesn't make you stronger.
One straight line per person.
Gather as many of those straight lines as possible and have them all point in the same direction.
A spear with a rider does that.
“It’s just one straight line, and while they’re all facing forward, that one spear is pointed into the void, but it’s a weapon more powerful than all the other spears on the battlefield combined.”
“That’s me?”
"Yes." ---pp.139~140
The devil himself tampered with the safety devices of the ballistic missiles mounted on the nuclear submarine.
Decoy nuclear submarine.
The taste of nuclear submarines.
Fake routes.
Fake command signals.
A fake logbook containing the ship's movements over the past few days.
The lonely route of a missing nuclear submarine, for which we have no choice but to prepare, whether we believe it or not.
It's the same in any country.

Publisher's Review
Recommended by film director Park Chan-wook.
Bae Myung-hoon's narrative, which is so terrifyingly engaging, is more spectacular than the movie.
"This is a story about human nature and the formula of the mind!" - Novelist Bae Myung-hoon

“The problem is taste.
“That can never be hidden.”
The countless tastes that someone clicked on and searched for leave traces on the information network.
A world where you can see into other people's minds simply by comparing their tastes.
The killer's taste is trapped in an information network that monitors the entire human society, rather than targeting and monitoring each individual target.
Traces of the soul that can no longer be hidden expose the enemy to signs of a dangerous existence...
If you can't hide it, then explode it so that no one knows it exists.
A battle of wits and a breathtaking chase unfolds between the decoys that leave behind hundreds of fake tastes and the decoy snipers that filter out only the real tastes.
A killer who risks his life to save his first love, a secret weapon shrouded in mystery, a missing nuclear submarine, and a demon being created by the Federation—Bae Myung-hoon's terrifyingly engrossing narrative is more spectacular than a movie.
Three main characters on the border between life and death.
Bae Myung-hoon's gaze, which had been penetrating the universe without hesitation, now delves into the human heart.
Author Bae Myung-hoon, who broke the boundaries of imagination, stands on the border between life and death and tells a fiercely fascinating story.
While he has previously explored the world through his work "Tower" and "God's Orbit," this time he presents a different story about the formula of the mind through three main characters on the border between life and death.
A civil servant killer who delivers death with his exceptional sense of killing.
Some countries do not accidentally cause casualties in the course of normal activities, but rather intentionally produce death itself.
A government official assassin belonging to an unofficial organization of the state that performs that role.
Assassins only carry out their duties as directed and do not care what the Federation does.
Kim Eun-kyung, the daughter of a purged power broker who plays the death
In the mystery drama "The Innocence of Ranke," Eun-kyung, who plays neither the main character nor the supporting character, but a corpse that is nothing more than a prop, is the hidden daughter of a powerful person who has never been officially mentioned.
A person who had to run away to the stage within the stage.
Even if you run away like that, it's still a thin, precarious spark of life that seems like it could be extinguished at the slightest gust of wind.
They are acting like they are dead, but in reality they are already dead.
Jo Eun-soo, a genius intelligence analyst who was officially killed by the Federation
Jo Eun-soo, a true genius who could not have hidden his talents even if he had been in a physical education school or a pottery school instead of a gifted school.
Although it was officially reported that the organization had eliminated them, no one can be certain that the operation was successful.

The moment you rate this novel, your taste will be revealed!
People leave traces of their choices here and there.
By precisely comparing the ads you click on and the words you search for, you can categorize people with similar tastes and ultimately figure out what movie they'll watch next or where they'll go on vacation.
No one can hide their tastes.
The trajectory of your tastes tells you what you like and even where your heart moves.
It can not only predict behavior, but also detect existence.
So, is there absolutely no way to hide it? If you can't hide it, then do your best to reveal it.
Hundreds of fake me's multiplying like an explosion.
This is Deco.
Decoys that are almost identical to the real thing but have distinctly different tastes are a new concept of camouflage that hides the real thing's tastes that are revealed in the database.
So, what about your decoy? Compare your tastes with the real you, as you evaluate this novel.
It is ‘concealment’ because it cannot be hidden even if you try to hide it.
'Hide' has two meanings.
It is an action to hide something from the other person, and to hide it properly, a perfect lie is needed.
But in the end, it is concealment because it cannot be hidden.
The other is the desire to hide.
But just as you can't hide your tastes, you can't hide your heart either.
The story is something that cannot be hidden no matter how hard you try to hide it. It is hidden with perfect fake decoys, but in the end, the truth is revealed as the hidden heart reveals its identity.
But the moment you peel back the layers of disguise and think you've figured out everything about this novel, you realize you've fallen for Bae Myung-hoon's decoy.
The Bae Myung-hoon-style twist that reveals the true nature of the heart only after five layers have been removed proves the clear intention that this is a story about the formula of the heart.
“Some devils live their entire lives without realizing that they are devils.
So some angels spend their whole lives wondering if they might be that devil.”
Bae Myung-hoon, who had stretched out into the infinite universe in search of God, also entered the abyss of humanity in search of the devil.
But Bae Myung-hoon came up with a different reading method.
A demon with a sense of touch, a demon hidden behind five layers of seals, a being that feels pleasure in the sensation of killing and grows by drinking blood, but at the same time, it is also a weapon that controls the database and can mix real and fake information, turning the entire Earth into a battlefield at the same time.
Perhaps Bae Myung-hoon met a real devil while writing this novel.
A demon who creates decoys that can appear for real while also being a being that writes novels by adjusting his own subconscious.
Bae Myung-hoon's narrative, which is so terrifyingly engaging, is more spectacular than the movie.
