-Jury comments by Kim Nam-joong (children's story writer) and Choi Na-mi (children's story writer)

When the rain pours down on a summer day, people take a short nap, leaving the midday heat behind them.
That's why the rain that falls in summer is called 'Jambi'.
Kim Do-young's 『Summer Rain, Jambi』, which won the grand prize at the 4th Historical Fairy Tale Award in 2025, depicts the meeting between Crown Prince Lee San, who cannot sleep due to the pressure and fear of having to survive while carrying the hot and painful memory of losing his father terribly, and Gyu-an, who was born into lowly society but has a clever personality and a keen ear for sounds and dreams of becoming an interpreter.
This is a new historical fairy tale that will bring emotion and resonance, following in the footsteps of 『The Child Who Climbed the Wall』 and 『Hansung to Seoul』 presented by Biryongso.
"Even without a grand historical narrative, the work's understanding of the times and the characters' individual personalities are enough to entertain and move readers," and while the story of Yi San is well-known, the addition of "the story of Gyu-an, a three-dimensional character who vividly expresses emotions between a realistic understanding of her situation and her desires" led to the book's praise, saying, "A new kind of fairy tale of resolution was born." (Judges Kim Nam-joong and Choi Na-mi)

The illustrations were by Haerang, the illustrator of 『Border』, the winner of the 2025 French Socière Prize.
The image of two people in the summer rain that pours down, then subsides, and then slowly stops, and the scenery inside and outside the palace are captured in a modern interpretation, giving a new joy to reading a historical fairy tale.

Gyu-an, born to a noble father and a commoner mother, was beaten and abused by the lady of the household and her older brothers, but one day, she was suddenly summoned to the palace.
Grandmother Yeongbin, who was worried about the Crown Prince's safety, chose Saga's child to give him a companion.
Gyu-an, who met Lee San, whom she had only heard of through bad rumors, just wants to leave the palace alive.
Meanwhile, after his father's death, Isan, who had been unable to eat or sleep properly and had been reading books without any distractions due to his grief and self-reproach, clicks his tongue at Gyu-an, who casually tells lies that are obvious in his responses, but for some reason, continues to keep her by his side.
The two boys, who were as far apart as the sky and the ground, gradually come to understand each other's situation, find peace through each other, and gain the strength to move forward.

Summer, the sound of rain, sunflowers.
As we follow the footsteps of the two boys, we soon discover the beautiful metaphor the author has planted in those three words.
And by leaning on this story, we too gain the confidence that it's okay to take a break, and that even after taking a break, we can move forward again.
It is the most beautiful sound of the rain that 『Rain that Falls in Summer, Rain』 tells us.

Publisher's Review
If you're going to beat me to death, why don't you ask me to make you a eunuch instead?
I was confident that I could do really well if I became an interpreter.

-Gyu-an, the son of a nobleman and commoner

Rest in peace in the sunflower field.
Gyu-an lives a life that is very different from her name.
Born as a commoner, he had to call his father "Madam Yeong-gang", and his wife and older brothers would come to visit him out of the blue and pick on him for no reason.
So Gyu-an just learned how to survive.
The unique trick of lying flat on the ground and joking that he will die is Gyu-an's struggle to avoid being beaten to death.
The only dream that Gyu-an has is to become an interpreter.
Gyu-an, who has the talent to hear everything accurately, from footsteps walking from afar to whispered foreign languages, is confident that if he is exempted from the exam, he will become a great interpreter.
But, suddenly, he told me to enter the palace.
The old woman, who has come to visit after a long time with a troubled expression, tries to ignore her son's wounded face and says that an order has been given and that he must go to the East Palace and be with the Crown Prince.
The Crown Prince, who lost his father so tragically last year, who knows if the pent-up anger from the past year has been building up? Gyu-an, if he can't leave the palace alive, should at least beg to be made a eunuch.

Even after this summer passes, there is next summer.

As long as the world doesn't end, the summer my father died will come back every year.
-Son of Crown Prince Sado, Yi San

Even though his father died, Yisan did not wear mourning clothes and was unable to attend the funeral.
It was all grandfather's orders.
My heart was filled with sadness, but I couldn't show it. I missed my father, but I couldn't even say his name.
Lee San, who was bright since childhood, simply devoted himself to studying and reading books day and night.
Although he appears unwavering with his firm personality and strictness towards himself, his mother, grandmother, and the court lady Ilhwa and eunuch Heungrok, who silently watch over Yisan, are deeply concerned about his health.
However, the child named Gyu-an, who was sent by the grandmother as a friend, keeps shaking Isan.
He tells all kinds of jokes and obvious lies, and even talks back to me, making Isan wonder if there is another child like him in the world.

“What kind of mind is a peaceful mind? Do you want that and not money?”
(……)
“I would be satisfied with a world where people do not harass people.

Then your mind will be at ease, you will study well, and you will earn money.

“It would be even better if I could eat honey water and glutinous rice cakes sometimes.”
-During a conversation between Yisan and Gyu-an

Having Gyu-an by his side and learning all about his story, Yi-san thinks about how he should proceed as a friend in the present and as a future king.
And as I try to test Gyu-an's ability to hear well and figure out how to beat him, I feel hungry for the first time in a long time, and I can't hide my smile when I see Gyu-an sweating with joy when he receives praise.
Meanwhile, Gyu-an, who has been watching the crown prince closely, finally figures out why Yi-san can't sleep, and devises a plan with Il-hwa and Heung-rok to help Yi-san sleep.
But the darkness that has descended upon the palace is not so easy.
Will the two be able to safely advance into the world that has yet to come, with the peace of mind they desire?

Let's stop and rest for a moment like Zambi on our summer days.
It's not too late though.
Even if we take a short break like a squirrel sleeping in the summer rain, we can still move forward.
