In search of the happiest memoriesA new fairy tale by Kim Hwa-yo, the author of the best-selling book “Without Me Knowing,” who delicately portrayed the psychology of children.
A healing fantasy tale about a child who runs away from home due to conflict with his family, meets the mysterious guide 'Lily' in a broken elevator, enters a world of memories, and rediscovers the warm love and sincerity of his family that he had forgotten.
April 11, 2025. Children's PD Baek Jeong- min
A child who rang the alarm goes on a quest to find his family's lost memories.
“This is the memory elevator.
“I’ll take you back to the memories you need most right now.”
Bestselling author of "Without Me Knowing," Kim Hwa-yo, returns with a new fantasy fairy tale depicting warm family love.
The protagonist, a fourth-year student named Jo Eun-ha, is trapped in a broken elevator and meets the beautiful and mysterious guide, Lily.
Among the thousands of elevators swirling outside the door, the one that Eunha climbed into was the Memory Elevator.
The author brought out the magic of the story by saying that the elevator, which takes you to a new landscape with just the push of a button, is the first adventure that modern children experience.
In this work, the cold and stuffy metal machinery is transformed into a silvery passageway to lost memories, captivating the reader's heart.
A heartwarming adventure story that was praised by the Children's Book Review Group as "a book that allows you to feel the love of family," and by Yoo Ji-hyun, the owner of the children's and youth literature bookstore "Bookbang Sachuengi," as "a work that gives you the strength to face and refill the void within yourself."

Into the book
I took a deep breath.
What unfolded before my eyes was not the gray hallway of our apartment that I see every day.
It was an open space filled with a bright light that was blinding to the eyes.
It was a vast, expansive place of light with no end in sight.
What was even more surprising was the elevators that filled the place.
Numerous elevators stood tall like pillars here and there.
The elevators, each moving in its own direction, seemed like living creatures in their own right.
“This can’t be happening…….”
A sound of exclamation barely escaped my lips.
Oh my gosh, hundreds, thousands of elevators.
The elevators went up, down, and opened their doors inside the glass building.
It rotated, stopped, and ran.
Each one had a different shape and color.
The sizes were different, and the speeds were different.
Here, everything is an elevator, and they are all different elevators.
--- pp.23-26
“Oh, I almost missed this.
Galaxy, I think you'll like it just the way you like it. A doll elevator where you can meet your very own doll.
Every doll outside the elevator door has a sweet and touching story.
They each have their own story and are waiting for their old friends to come find them.
Do you have a favorite teddy bear from your childhood? On the 55th floor, teddy bears will come running out. Finally, when you hold the teddy bear from your memories in your arms, you'll feel its heart beat with joy.
"What about you, Eunha? Is there a doll you'd like to meet that brings back memories?"
--- p.35
When I was young, my hair was much shorter and curlier than it is now.
The hands held close to the face were also smaller than they are now.
I was about to touch that hand without realizing it and was startled.
Because my hand couldn't reach it as if it was blocked by a thin film.
“I can’t touch it.”
Memories were like a world inside a bubble that would not burst.
Not only me, but I couldn't touch anything in the room.
The moment my fingertips were about to touch it, they bounced off the thin film.
I sighed in regret.
The room, full of memories, was filled with things I wanted to touch.
I wanted to press my favorite teddy bear blanket against my cheek to see if it was still warm, open the yellow box lid to see the toys I used to play with a long time ago, and reread the picture books that are no longer there.
It was a time when I was looking around the room with a sad heart.
“Galaxy, is our galaxy still sleeping?”
My heart leaped as soon as I heard that gentle voice.

Publisher's Review
A portrait of a child facing his first crisis: conflict with his family.
‘If I disappear from this world… … .’ Even children sometimes have to fight against these thoughts.
The protagonist, a 4th grader named Eun-ha, runs away from home in shock at the thought that she might have a new father.
At that moment, the elevator I was riding in stopped with a loud noise.
'Mom needs a new family.
So the elevator swallowed me?'
The suspense of the first chapter arises from the galactic conflict.
Any child who is going through a rough time with their beloved family will perk up at the galaxy's SOS.
This work follows the whirlwind of emotions in the minds of children from single-parent families, conveying the message that “even if the shape of my family changes, I myself will never change, and my family’s feelings for me will remain the same” (author interview).
Author Kim Hwa-yo says that each child she met during her time as a teacher had a “different genre of story.”
Having depicted the complex and mysterious layers of children's minds, he now seeks to explore the "layers of memory" through the world of elevators.
This is because, in this work, I wanted to present a story that begins with 'It was the worst day ever' and ends with 'It was the best memory ever.'

A world where the elevator is twisted, or where distress signals are sounded… …where hearts can be seen and heard
When you press the emergency bell, 'Lily' appears wearing a pearl-colored suit and red sneakers.
She is a woman with an exotic appearance, like a native English teacher at an English academy, but Eun-ha finds Lily strangely friendly.
Stepping outside, you see a forest of elevators.
There is also a 'Cookie Elevator' that takes you to a storybook where they make cookies, a 'Music Elevator' that gives you healing power when your heart hurts like a stone is stuck in it, and a 'Doll Elevator' where abandoned dolls wait for old friends.
What memories will Eunha discover as she descends deep into the earth via the "Memory Elevator"? What is the true identity of Lili, who led Eunha to the Memory Elevator?
The elevators, which rise up like mushrooms, each evoke emotions such as desire, comfort, and longing, twisting and wailing like sirens, exuding a jungle-like vitality.
Kim Su-young, an illustrator who majored in animation, unfolds a living, breathing world of elevators within dynamic compositions.
Not only are the characters full of personality, but the author also keenly captures the expressions of the child protagonist, which intensify as the drama progresses from suspense to fantasy to emotion, immersing the reader.
“A book of happiness that brought me back to my happiest memories” Recommended by the Children’s Book Review Group!
It is noteworthy that 50 children in grades 2-6 read the book before its publication and sent recommendations without exception.
“I always thought my child was just a prankster, but I was surprised to see him cry while reading a book for the first time,” or “My child expressed his desire to write a touching story like this.” These were the first comments from parents that stirred up a stir in the editorial department.
Along with this, the children's book reviews that arrived one after another showed an interesting intersection.
There was a confession that after reading, he reflected on the importance of family and friends.
Even in an age when discussing family crises is no longer new, isn't this proof that an unforgettable "family fairy tale" has been born that the whole family can read and talk about together?
Fifty children's book reviews are included at the end of the book.
