Beep! The sound of birth echoes through the fifth grade classroom.
"Please Take Care of My Tiger," a fairy tale filled with the laughter and anticipation, friendship and conflict of children who care for and raise life, and ponder how to say goodbye gracefully, is a story that lets you feel the energy of the children and teacher who fill the classroom.
Author Seol Sang-rok won the 30th Golden Toad Award in 2024 for his first full-length children's story.
"Unlike many fairy tales that have been portrayed as problematic situations, this work was praised for depicting a scene from an educational setting in a school or classroom in a very concrete manner," while also "not losing the charm of the story." (Judges: Hwang Seon-mi, Kim Hye-jeong, Kim Yu-jin)

The 'Egg Hatching Project' of Class 4, Grade 5, started with the suggestion of the eccentric homeroom teacher, who is always like an eccentric scientist.
Space and his friends work together to build an egg incubator and wait for the chicks to hatch safely.
Then one day, Woo-joo and Su-jin arrive at school early in the morning and find the classroom in disarray and broken eggs on the floor...
As everyone tries to figure out who the 'Black Hat' witnessed by the universe is, the children who welcome the birth of the surviving eggs gather all their hearts to raise the 'tigers' well.

Author Seol Sang-rok, who is also a current elementary school teacher, has worked with children on egg hatching projects in actual classrooms several times.
The preciousness of birth, finally encountered through collaboration with friends and sometimes failure, made the children's eyes sparkle.
The children's honest and vivid images, filled with the author's experiences, enrich the story by adding to the interesting development of the mystery of the 'Black Hat' and the excitement of the children's friendship and love.
Author Me's drawings further enhance the charm of each character.
The cartoonish composition and unique drawings that add a twist allow the various emotional threads embroidered throughout the story to permeate in a pleasant way.

Publisher's Review
◆ Did someone watching our world press the pause button?

Unforgettable experiences that stopped my world and my friends' worlds in their tracks.

An egg hatching project is currently underway in the space classroom.
Under the direction of their eccentric teacher, the children build their own egg incubator and carefully care for seven eggs like a mother hen.
Of all the tasks to be done, turning the eggs by hand to ensure they are evenly warm is the most popular among children.
It is so exciting to feel the warmth of an egg, which is warmer than human body temperature.
Woojoo arrived at school earlier than anyone else today to be the first to touch the eggs, avoiding the always picky class president, Eunbyeol Go.
However, the empty classroom is a mess, and Woo-joo, who ran to the egg incubator with Ji-soo-jin, who happened to arrive at school early, is momentarily stopped.
The egg, which was named Tiger, was found horribly broken.

The universe experiences several 'pauses' that freeze it as it experiences hatching an egg for the first time.
The 'Black Hat' incident that shocked and saddened everyone, the moment I heard the first cry of a chick breaking out of its egg, and the moment I held the hand of a friend who had experienced it all together.
As a fan of mystery novels and science magazines, Woo-joo has always been an intuitive and logical thinker. Through unforgettable experiences with his friends, he accepts waves of emotion that cannot be explained with his head alone, and expands the 'universe' within him.

◆ Are we sad or angry now?
If I were the black hat… what would I have done?
We have grown through the many faces of mistakes and failures.

The black hat that Woo-joo witnessed that day is pointed out as the most likely culprit who broke the egg.
With the help of their teacher, the universe and the children check the school CCTV and try to find the culprit.
The homeroom teacher, who tells the children to try everything themselves instead of giving answers whenever they ask questions, discovers who the Black Hat is, but instead of telling the children right away, asks the Black Hat to give him time to reveal himself.
The teacher's words that he is more concerned about children's hurt hearts than broken eggs comfort the children's hearts and at the same time provide a path for them to recover and recover from their failures and mistakes.

Anyone can fail and make mistakes, but not everyone can overcome and apologize.
From eggs to chicks, and from chicks to wonderful chickens leaving school, the warm and beautiful warmth of these children with different personalities will give young readers the courage to fail and make mistakes in a healthy way.

◆ Review comments

In many fairy tales to date, schools have been depicted as either the backdrop to a child's daily life or as problematic spaces where academic pressure, competition, and school violence occur.
However, this work depicts a very specific scene of education that takes place in schools and classrooms, and makes us think about the value that school education holds for children today.
Not only the social significance, but also the appeal of the story within the work itself is alive.
The process of solving the mystery of who broke the egg was maintained from beginning to end, and each character was portrayed as a lovable and special being.
