What exactly is literacy? Literacy is often defined as the ability to read and write, which means it plays a crucial role in developing critical thinking, communication, and information processing skills.
The authors describe this literacy as a “key that opens the mind,” and wrote the “Literacy Textbook” with the intention of providing children with their own “key that opens the mind.”

『Literacy Textbook』 is a book written by 10 Korean language textbook writers and elementary education experts.
We have carefully selected a variety of must-read reading materials for each grade level, and included easy-to-do post-reading activities and vocabulary/grammar activities.
Through this, children were able to experience the joy of reading and writing and learn how to read.

Publisher's Review
Literacy is the 'key to unlocking the mind'
Developing literacy, the foundation of elementary school studies

Literacy is a hot topic these days.
They say that everyone needs to improve their literacy skills.

There are some misconceptions people have about literacy.
Examples include, ‘You just need to know a lot of words’ and ‘The best policy is to read a lot of books.’
There's nothing wrong with knowing a lot of words, but the problem is that this misconception leads to simply memorizing a lot of words.
Because words change their usage and meaning as they come together and disperse, we need to read various texts and books to see how words are used in various contexts.
It's also good to read a lot of books.
However, literacy skills do not automatically increase just by reading any book.
You must learn how to read and write by systematically approaching it with quality writing and books.
The "Literacy Textbook" is a book written by 10 Korean language textbook writers and elementary education experts to correct such misunderstandings about literacy and help children systematically read and write through high-quality texts. It consists of six volumes for grades 1-6.

Literacy grows through the experience of reading good texts.
When we have good writing, we can think more deeply and ask questions.
When I read a good piece of writing, I want to talk about it with someone.
The good writings that accumulate over the course of our lives make us people who can read, think, and be with others with pleasure.
Therefore, experiencing a lot of reading based on good writing is the first way to develop strong and long-lasting literacy skills.

The Literacy Textbook is full of good writing.
We have carefully selected and included must-read articles for each grade level from various branches.
And these writings are rich in good questions and food for thought that help me connect with myself, people, and the world, and look at them deeply and broadly.
I recommend the Literacy Textbook to children who find reading more interesting than reading, and to children who find reading difficult and frustrating.
Through this book, children will experience the joy of reading and writing and learn how to read.
And through the experience of reading a variety of works, you will gain the confidence to read a book thoroughly and deeply.

Professor Cho Byeong-yeong, who lectured on EBS's "Your Literacy," strongly recommended Kim Ji-cheol, South Chungcheong Province Superintendent of Education.
Grade-specific literacy textbooks recommended by 1,000 current teachers

Before the publication of the "Literacy Textbook," a nationwide advisory group of 1,000 teachers was formed to ask about the current state of literacy in elementary schools and to solicit opinions on the book.
First, when asked about the level of decline in students' literacy skills as perceived by teachers compared to media reports, 90% of the respondents answered that it was similar to or more severe than media reports, indicating that teachers are aware of the problem of declining students' literacy skills.
Then, I asked whether the school had any countermeasures or guidelines in place to address the decline in literacy skills.
As a result, 60% of teachers responded that they were not prepared.
Although we recognize that the decline in basic academic ability is a serious problem, we feel the struggles of those in the field who have no effective solutions.

Additionally, 99% of teachers believed that strengthening reading instruction would help improve students' literacy skills.
However, 70% of respondents said that it is good to read books that allow for consistent reading and simple post-reading activities, indicating that post-reading activities are also considered an important element of literacy.
97% of teachers believed that reading a variety of texts would also help improve literacy skills, and 90% of teachers responded that reading texts on various recommended reading lists was also a good method.
Ultimately, it turns out that reading good writing from a variety of sources can be a good solution for improving literacy.
We also present some of the advisory group's responses to the Literacy Textbook.

“I feel like I’ve received a comprehensive gift set that allows me to freely choose and read a variety of writings.
“It’s filled with interesting pieces that students will fall in love with.”
“My first grader did it all himself.
The composition is really great.
“It’s much better than any other post-reading activity sheet.”
“I like that they select and present good writing appropriate for the grade level.
“I am pleased that the curriculum is structured by difficulty level, starting from the first grade, so that students can develop their literacy skills over a long period of time.”
“I tried it myself with my 7 and 8 year old children.
The voice actor's voice was natural, and I really enjoyed the physical expressions.
“There are many popular works and the post-reading activities are also great.”
“The length of each piece is appropriate, so I think it can be used without burden during class.
“I have high expectations because the text and illustrations presented are enough to pique students’ interest and will naturally lead them to read the entire book.”

As mentioned before, literacy is the key to unlocking the mind.
It is a key, but it is not a fixed key.
In some ways, this key resembles clay.
Depending on who makes it, these keys take on many different forms.
I hope you will take your time and start playing with literacy with the 『Literacy Textbook』, just like playing with clay.
In addition to the elementary Korean language textbook, the elementary social studies and science textbooks (8 volumes each) are scheduled to be released in August.
