“I won’t tell anyone yet!”
A warm fairy tale that touches children's hearts

Author Hwang Seon-mi, beloved for her warm yet delicate gaze toward children and her elegant, unadorned prose, has returned with "A Secret That Sparkles."
This book is a warm and affectionate work that touches the hearts of children who have secrets they don't want to tell, secrets they wish only they knew.
Eleven-year-old Bom-in lived with her grandmother when her parents left for Africa on a medical mission when she was five.
But when even her grandmother suddenly leaves for a nursing home, Bom-in ends up living with her uncle, with whom she has been living with a distant relationship.
Although Bom-in is angry because she doesn't know the real reason why the adults who are responsible for taking care of her are doing this, she vaguely knows that her mom, dad, and grandmother have a secret that they are not willing to tell her.
But from the moment I started living with my uncle, that secret kept rustling around in my mind, making me feel uneasy, and soon it showed its face.
But I still don't want to tell even my closest friends why I live with my uncle.
My secret is mine, whether I tell it or not, it's my heart.

Into the book
The wind passed by, ruffling my uncle's hair.
I guess unemployed people have to grow their hair like that.
A person who doesn't go to work, doesn't earn money, and just stays at home is unemployed.
This is what my grandmother said while clicking her tongue.
I don't like this uncle either.
Whenever he sees me, he doesn't know what to do and starts acting awkwardly.
Just like an idiot.
But every time I come, he buys me something.
It's all doll play sets and all pink stuff so it's a bit like that.
That's something only little kids like.

Suddenly tears welled up in my eyes.
I guess my uncle is really unemployed, just like my grandmother said.
Even though I lived with my grandmother, I was the oldest child in the neighborhood.
Even though we live apart, my mom and dad are both doctors.
I am the only granddaughter of my grandmother who was a homeroom teacher.
Even though everyone has left, at least I never thought of myself as poor.
But then all of a sudden I feel like a poor, poor kid.

I didn't even open my mouth.
He walked with his chin held high and his head held high.
It's a nightmare for me to have to go to a new school with people like that.
It's worse than a nightmare.
It's all the adults' fault.
From mom and dad to grandma.
Our pickers have absolutely no sense of responsibility.
Just wait and see.
Because I will pay you back someday.
I will grow up to be very, very cool and appear in a salty manner.
It's no use trying to hold on to it then.
I'll tell you exactly this.
'I'm not a kid anymore.
You abandoned me anyway.'
If a better word comes to mind, you should use it.

My uncle is sleeping in the room.
When on earth did you come in?
You came in at night without me knowing, went out again in the middle of the night, and came back in the morning.
It's suspicious.
Normal people don't walk around at night.
What if my uncle does something bad? Like a thief or a robber?
The name on the letter addressed to my uncle was also a bit suspicious.
My uncle's name is Kim Gyeong-je.
But the envelope had 'Black K' written on it.
You can tell at a glance that it's not an ordinary name.
People who are hiding something don't use that kind of thing.
Did Grandma know everything? So what did she say whenever she saw Uncle? There's always someone who nags at Uncle.
mom.
So, your mother also knew about your uncle.
Whatever it is, it's not good.
If that were the case, we would have been on good terms.

The lady looked at the back of my head with a hand mirror.
It was reflected in a large mirror and I could see all the tangled hair at the back of my neck, and it was all in a big clump.
So there was nothing I could do even with my fingers.
It can't be helped.
I haven't washed or combed my hair since I came here.
'There's something sticky, like gum or jelly, stuck to this.
Even if it's not this, it needs to be cut a little.
So that you can touch it well even by yourself.'
For a moment, my heart ached.
I feel like I've been caught hiding something.
It's like you're saying this because you know that there's no one left to comb my hair.
'So, are you going to cut it?'
When I started to cry, the lady cut me off like a pair of scissors.
'What are you going to do with your messy hair?'
I stuck out my lips.
I can't talk back because I'm an adult, but this isn't right.
I know my hair is a mess, but it's my hair.

“It wasn’t until I got off the subway and took the green number 3 bus that I felt relieved. The neighborhood I knew began to appear. “You, Unie?” Pink Ribbon glanced at me and said.
I quickly wiped away my tears and pretended not to notice.
But when I see things like the market I used to go to with my grandmother, the Bulgama Bathhouse, and Gombonae Bakery, I can't help but cry.
Grandma, I'm home...

Publisher's Review
“Everyone has secrets they don’t want to tell anyone.”
Hwang Seon-mi's literature that offers comfort and empathy

Author Hwang Seon-mi, who has depicted the innermost thoughts and dazzling growth of children through the theme of secrets in works such as 『Secret I Want to Know』, 『What Happened to the Shoes One Day』, and 『Shining Shadow』, has returned with 『A Secret That Sparkles』.
This book brightly and cheerfully depicts the process in which Bom-in, who seems to be brisk and sharp, but also delicate and tearful, and her uncle, who has been living alone but suddenly has to take on the role of a father, become a real family, just like the cheerfulness contained in her nickname, 'Charlangi'.
Additionally, the process of Bom-in finding out her uncle's secret unfolds with suspense until the very end.

Just as a full body of water overflows, no matter how tightly we hide a secret, it reveals itself regardless of our will and leaves us flustered.
Does that mean it's okay for anyone to tell that secret?
The main character of this book, Bom-in, one morning, against her will, ends up living with an unsavory uncle.
I'm really uneasy about living with my uncle, who seems unemployed and has some kind of suspicious secret.
However, the uncle's secret, which he had never expected, becomes more and more evident and reveals its true face, leaving Bom-in flustered.
But I still don't want to tell anyone the real reason why I live with my uncle.

The author delicately portrays the duality of Bom-in's mind, as she pretends that her grandmother, who is losing her memory, is still the vice principal, pretends to respect her mom and dad who are in Africa taking care of other children while hating them, and pretends not to know what her uncle means when he says he will be a good father while knowing what he means. The author shows that everyone has secrets and that they need time to catch their breath to properly face those secrets.
Because the more time we spend holding that secret, the stronger our hearts will grow.
That's why sometimes we need a loving heart that pretends not to know a secret even though it knows it.

I have a secret too.
I don't really want to talk, so I won't talk until I feel like talking.
I think sometimes secrets make the heart grow fonder.
_From the author's note

One of the greatest gifts literature can give us is that it not only comforts us but also allows us to understand and empathize with those we have never experienced before.
In particular, this work captures the heart of a child who wants to protect his or her secrets and dignity in any situation, making it a must-read for adults who respect and love children.

“I will choose who is the right guardian for me!”
The birth of a charming children's character that will be talked about for a long time.

The protagonist of this book is a charming character with a voice worthy of note in our children's literature.
When Bom-in was only five years old, she was separated from her parents and lived with her grandmother. When her grandmother went into a nursing home, she ended up living with her uncle, with whom she was not very close.
Despite the uncomfortable and unfamiliar situation of being in her uncle's house, Bom-in tries to keep to the 9 o'clock school start time and gives her uncle, who only gives her toast and milk every morning, a nutritious diet that a child should eat.
Also, just as his grandmother taught him, the more awkward a person is, the more he should act like a fool. Even when he is teased for his disheveled hair, he keeps his chin up and gives an absurd reason to maintain his dignity.

Even at home, children often have no voice and simply follow the decisions made by adults.
For children like Bomin, who are placed in an uncomfortable and unfamiliar environment, it is not easy to find their voice.
But that doesn't mean all children lost their voices.
Just as Pippi, a girl who spoke out boldly in a world that wanted children to keep their mouths shut and listen well, was born, there have always been children who spoke out in one way or another.

Bom-in, who sings to her grandmother who orders her around the house, “Cinderella lost her mother when she was young, and was abused by her stepmother and sisters,” and who proudly tells her landlord, the grandfather, who plucks out flowers indiscriminately because they are his land, that she will pay for the flowers’ lives, and who says, “I choose who is the right guardian for me” even after learning an unbearable secret, is a charming and confident child character who should be talked about for a long time in our children’s literature.

Also, author Kim Jeong-eun, who delicately captures the characters' emotions through facial expressions in bright and clear pictures, portrays the characters of Bom-in, who seems strong but is delicate and tearful, and the uncle, who seems blunt but is soft on the inside, with his unique liveliness and loveliness, making readers smile throughout the book.
