Publisher's Review
A finalist for Finland's most prestigious literary award, the Finlandia Junior Award!
A picture book that beautifully depicts growth, sadness, joy, and friendship.

"The Fox Who Draws" is a three-part series about a fox who dreams of drawing, the memorable moments she encounters in her daily life, the sparkling friendships she makes, and the inner growth she experiences through empathizing with pain.
This picture book, the authors' first book, was shortlisted for the Finlandia Junior Award, Finland's most prestigious literary award.
Author Kaiya Pannula spent three years writing the fox's story, and illustrator Neta Rehto delicately brought out the fox's emotions contained in the text with her dense illustrations.
The two of them worked together to complete the fox's story by matching the text and pictures.
The story, which feels like reading a short story with a long resonance, is born as a unique and beautiful picture book, blending with the four seasons of Finland.

"The Drawing Fox" tells the story of an introverted fox who lives in a small village in the forest and experiences things throughout the four seasons.
The three episodes each cover different topics, yet they connect naturally.

The first is the story of a fox who wants to draw beautiful pictures, but meets a new friend and broadens his perspective and view on drawing.
The fox wanted to draw, so he packed his painting tools and went outside.
But the baby badgers were constantly moving, the food was so delicious that I ate it all before I could draw it, and the clouds passed by so quickly that it was difficult to draw.
The more I wanted to draw well, the more I disliked each and every one of them.
Then one day, a new friend he makes by chance shows the fox a new world.

The second story tells of how a fox's inexplicable depression is lifted on a snowy winter day.
One day, the fox stopped wanting to meet anyone.
The fox's heart, frozen for no apparent reason, continues for a while, but then melts in an instant at the sight of someone's footsteps (a friend's) heading towards its home. This is a momentary emotional change.

The third story is a message of enlightenment about how complaining about not meeting your own standards ultimately comforts you and helps you move forward.
The fox complains about the roses growing wildly, but the numerous roses in the garden comfort the fox's great sadness.
As a year of many events passes, the fox's paintings pile up one by one, and the paintings that were never shown to anyone are finally hung in the fox's first exhibition.
I wonder what kind of pictures were hung?

Because it doesn't only convey brightness
An even more brilliant story

This book, “The Fox Who Draws Pictures,” does not only convey a cheerful and bright atmosphere.
As you follow the fox's story, you may feel a sense of loneliness, like the dark and desolate Finnish winter.
This work quietly follows the emotions felt by the main character, a fox, as if stepping on snow.
The fox is angry and frustrated because the situation does not meet his great desires.
There are days when I feel helpless and depressed.
There are also tears shed at the sadness that is difficult for anyone to bear, the feeling of loss after losing a loved one.
These are not unique experiences that only the fox in the story experiences, but are things we all have to experience time and time again as we go through life, and are emotions that we should not overlook.
This book delicately touches on each and every emotion, bringing deep empathy and resonance.

The fox hopes that things will turn out as he planned, but the picture doesn't turn out as he planned, and the roses secretly take root and cover the neatly arranged garden.
In the process, the fox feels frustrated and even gets irritated.
Sometimes, we fall into unreasonable depression, close our hearts, and avoid others.
But the fox overcomes the difficult situation with a little help from his friend and his own strength.
We can all be foxes, and we can all be strong supporters of foxes to others.
That is why this picture book will be a work of light that comforts and heals our sad hearts when we face moments when it is difficult to stand upright.
