The first Korean history written by a historian for children
The first Korean history written by a historian for children! There are many Korean history books for children. But it's hard to find a book written by a historian. It is by no means easy for professional researchers to write at the level of children who lack experience and knowledge. But eight years ago, three historians took on this difficult task. This is because we believed that children should also have the opportunity to learn proper Korean history that reflects new research findings. It's easy to think of history as fixed. But like any other academic discipline, history is a field in which new discoveries and interpretations are constantly made through research. However, it takes a considerable amount of time for the research results to be reflected in popular books, especially children's books. As a result, most parents teach their children historical knowledge that they learned during their childhood and adolescence, which may not be valid now. Three historians, who felt sorry about this, decided to write a Korean history book for children. It was a decision that was possible because all three historians are currently teaching Korean history to prospective elementary school teachers at teacher training colleges. 〈Children Reading Korean History〉 was written by Professor Lim Ki-hwan of Seoul National University of Education, who specialized in ancient history, covering ancient history and the early Goryeo period; Professor Kang Seok-hwa of Gyeongin National University of Education, who specialized in Joseon history, covering the later Goryeo period and Joseon history; and Professor Kim Jeong-in of Chuncheon National University of Education, who specialized in modern history, covering modern and contemporary history. Not stopping there, the three historians reviewed and discussed each other's manuscripts, striving to maintain a balanced perspective. In addition, In-Seok Lee, who has worked as a high school history teacher for nearly 30 years, and Eun-Hee Hwang, a current elementary school teacher, carefully reviewed the manuscript and shared their perspectives on education. Eun-Hee Hwang also directly participated in writing the post-reading activity corner, “Broadening Your Thinking.” |
