“Can our lives be changed with just one word?”

A 2018 Newbery Medal winner, full of humor and emotion.

The Newbery Medal, established in 1922, is an award given annually to authors and works that have made contributions to children's literature.
The Newbery Medal, one of the oldest children's literature awards, was awarded in 2018 to Kelly's third novel, Goodbye, Universe.
Kelly's Newbery Medal win marks the fourth time an Asian American has won the award, and the first time an American of Filipino descent has.

This work features diversity and bullying, topics that author Kelly frequently addresses.
It can be said that the author's experience living as an Asian American is reflected in the work.
In "Hello, Universe," the villainous and bully Chet Bullens bullies the timid and shy Virgil, ultimately causing conflict between the rest of Kaori and Valencia's universe.
But the story is not serious or depressing.
The work is humorous and the characters' emotions are well-drawn, making it easy to get lost in and read.
With a smile on your face, of course.
And finally, we get a glimpse of the beginning of a lovely(?) friendship.

Into the book
Virgil had no idea how hard the boy's parents would try to get him out, but he was convinced that if he were trapped in a rock, his grandmother would chisel away at the rock with a chisel to free him.
--- p.14

It's not that I hate my mom.
Sometimes it's easy to talk to your mom.
That's what happens on days when mom doesn't act like a mom at all.
But I don't know when that day will come.
Sometimes my mom tries to be overly protective of me and tells me what to do.
It's too much in everything.
One time I asked my mom to stop treating me like that because I'm deaf.
Sometimes I really feel that way.
--- p.23

Virgil looked back and forth between Kaori and Gen, trying to sort out his dizzying thoughts.
I imagined the words I was about to say lining up perfectly, coming out of my mouth without hesitation, without missing a word or two, without mumbles or stammers.
This was a very important issue.
Now Virgil is about to reveal his first top secret.
The secret that made me think that hope was lost.
--- p.54

As Chet took a step closer, Virgil took a step back.
The bull guy suddenly burst into laughter, as if he thought it was funny, and snatched the bag from Virgil's back with incredible force.
The wind sent Virgil spinning around and he fell to the ground, a tingling pain running down his palms and up to his shoulders.
The bull guy ran away like a bullet.
Virgil got up in a hurry and ran after Chet, shouting.
--- p.121

“Imagine you’re somewhere else,” was what his mother used to tell Virgil when he had nightmares as a child.
Before Mom called Virgil a turtle.
Before Mom and Dad realized that Virgil would never be perfect like his two older brothers.
--- p.161

“We should go into business together.” “What?” I thought I had misheard.
Kaori speaks again.
“We have to work together.
I know the spiritual world and you know the natural world.
It's a very good relationship.
So fate brought us together as friends.” Friend.
--- p.259

“When you open your eyes, the world looks different.
It's the magic of time.
What you believe today you may not believe tomorrow.
If you don't look, the world changes.
And when you open your eyes again, you see a different world.” It is light.
--- p.280

“Kaori.
“Everything you said… … .” Kaori fumed.
“Don’t say that.” “Those are just...” Gendo followed her sister.
“Don’t say that.” “……It was a coincidence.” Kaori lowered her head.
“If you really believe that, there is no hope for you, Virgil Salinas.”

"Hello, Universe" won the Newbery Medal in 2018, which is given to the best contribution to children's literature. The Newbery Medal, the most trusted children's literature award with a history of nearly 100 years since 1922, selected "Hello, Universe" as the grand prize in 2018, praising the author's creative combination of characters in a story with changing perspectives, and the modern adventure story that shines with humor and genuine emotion.
This story chronicles the amazing day that four people experience as they enter middle school.
It unfolds from a different perspective the intertwining of four lives that seemed unlikely to be connected.
In each chapter, four main characters take turns being the narrators of the story.
And the events that took place that day around the well are closer to fate than coincidence.
And to the readers of this book, I ask in the name of Virgil, in the name of Valencia, in the name of Kaori, in the name of Chet Bullens.

“Can our lives be changed with just one word?”

Immerse yourself in the vibrant emotions of every character!
Author Kelly said this at the Newbery Medal ceremony for Hello Universe.

“I am not conscious of my readers.
I just write for the characters in my novels.
Virgil Salinas, shy, lonely, and always out of the spotlight.
Valencia wants to be the next Jane Goodall, but has no friends.
… … I write for those children.
Because I was one of those kids, and I still am."

As the author says, the characters in Kelly's novels are vivid.
I feel alive.
If you actually go that street, you might be able to meet Virgil and Chet Bullens.
Such vivid characters are a great strength of Kelly's novels.
Every word and action of Virgil, a shy and embarrassed child, can be summed up in one word: 'Virgil-like.'
Even though you can't hear it, everything about Valencia, which is both confident and stubborn, can be understood as something that is natural in Valencia.
Even Kaori and her younger brother Gen have their own universes.
In the story, each universe collides, collides, becomes entangled, and connects with each other, creating a larger universe.
And the first step to becoming a great universe, the first key is one word, 'hello.'

An everyday adventure that makes it special!
The adventures in this book are nothing special.
It's not some adventure exploring the basement of a medieval castle with vampires.
When Chet Bullens, who is weaker on the inside but pretends to be strong on the outside, starts to bully Virgil, Virgil ends up trapped at the bottom of a well with his pet Gulliver, and the story unfolds into a grand adventure as Virgil's situation becomes intertwined with people who don't know where Virgil is and how to contact the outside world.
The incident is not serious.
It could be said to be a one-day happening in the background of everyday life.
But the objective size of the incident is not important.
This adventure is as big an event as a space war for 11-year-olds, and the emotions and thoughts contained in it make it the most special event in the world.
Daily events that contain my emotions tend to have a much greater appeal than major events like a war in another country that do not contain emotions.
In that respect, 『Hello, Universe』 depicts adventures that can happen in reality in a very special way.

Each universe shines with interesting compositions!
In "Hello, Universe," Virgil, Kaori, Valencia, and Chet Bullens appear as the main characters in each chapter.
The story is told from the character's point of view.
If you look at the picture at the beginning of the chapter, you can tell who the main character of this chapter is.
The story of the villain Chet Bullens, full of bravado, is unique, but above all, in the chapter where Valencia is the main character, unlike in other chapters, he appears as the narrator named 'I'.
However, we cannot say that the main character of this book is Valencia.
All four are main characters.
It's just a device to focus more on the inner side of Valencia, where the ears are deaf.
As you immerse yourself in the story, focusing on each individual universe, you will be deeply moved by the mutual attraction and collision of each universe!
