Book Introduction
A word from MD
There are many people who want to read books but don't know which books to read or how to read them.
Author Im Su-hyeon, a classic reading expert, provides helpful guidance on how to read philosophy, history, economics and management, politics and society, and literature.
To ensure that any book is easy to read, we've included the background knowledge needed for reading.
- Son Min-gyu, humanities PD
The 'reading method' should be different depending on the genre of the book!
Philosophy, history, economics and management, politics and society, literature
From genre-specific reading methods to essential basic knowledge~

“Books are written differently depending on the genre.
Depending on the genre, the core issues and methodology differ.
So, depending on the genre of the book I choose, the reading order and reading points should also be different.
Every book contains the author's specific argument in a unique format for its genre, and the reader needs to have a sense for quickly grasping this plan.
Because only then can you read and understand efficiently.
“To grasp the author’s intentions and strategies and remake the entire book as your own, you need a differentiated reading strategy for each genre.”

This is the author's explanation in the prologue of this book.
The author, who had been a literary girl since childhood, enjoyed reading novels more than watching movies or dramas.
When watching a movie or drama, you just have to accept the created image, but when reading a book, you can create any image in your head.
As such, reading involves active thinking on the part of the reader.
The author teaches a reading method that structures the information in a book using such organizational skills.

Structuring your work helps you read more efficiently.
Through structuring, the information in the book is clearly categorized and organized, which helps it to remain in the memory for a long time.
While existing reading methods usually present general theories of reading, the author's genre-specific reading methods are practical and efficient guidelines that can be applied in real life.
By segmenting the genre into philosophy, history, economics and management, politics and society, and literature, we present customized reading strategies optimized for each genre.
You can learn specific usage methods easily and enjoyably through the abundant examples presented in each chapter.

Into the book
Reading the conclusion first is the surest way to determine whether the book is the right topic and genre for your goals.
It also has a positive aspect, helping us maintain a sense of overall direction and avoid getting lost in the deluge of detail.
This means that by reading the conclusion first, you can gain a more holistic perspective that sees the forest rather than just the trees.

The best way to make the content of a book vivid in your memory is to read while writing down the important points.
As explained earlier, it is very helpful to organize the contents of the entire book and each chapter in a concise structure.
By structuring your arguments and evidence, you can clearly input the contents of the book into your head, and by visualizing them through records, you can remember them clearly.

The key to literacy is vocabulary.
For fast and accurate reading, you must be able to immediately interpret the meaning of as many words as possible, regardless of whether they are native Korean words, Chinese characters, or foreign words.
Vocabulary is an essential foundation for intuitively grasping the meaning of key concepts and also helps us understand the meaning hidden between the lines.

Don't be obsessed with the number of recommendations.
At the beginning of each year, many people make reading plans like, “I have to read at least 30 books this year!”
However, unprincipled reading focused on increasing the quantity may provide psychological satisfaction, but its practical effect is very low.
Once you've decided to invest a significant amount of time in reading, it's important to strategically select your books to maximize the synergy effect.

The difficulty of philosophy arises from the fact that the definitions of these concepts are difficult and esoteric.
Philosophers mainly use Chinese characters and write in literary language to convey their theories efficiently and accurately, so interpreting the sentences themselves is not easy.
Usually, the introduction provides an explanation of the main concepts, but many readers panic and become frustrated when they are bombarded with unfamiliar Chinese characters.
But if you keep in mind that simply defining key concepts will make subsequent work much easier, you will understand how important it is to get over the first hurdle.

The best way to remember history clearly is to read it while focusing on a specific historical figure.
Everyone has at least one historical figure they hold dear to their heart.
Whether it's an inventor we read about in biographies as children, a war hero brilliantly portrayed in movies, or a revolutionary reborn as a protagonist in a novel.
Think about it.
Wasn't it the moving narrative of his great life that drew you into that character?
History approached through the lives of fascinating figures never gets old no matter how many times you look at it; in fact, the more you repeat it, the more new it becomes.
This is the power of organic narrative.

With the recent increase in interest in geopolitics, the importance of history and geography is becoming increasingly apparent.
Geopolitics is the study of how geographical environments affect political, military, and economic interests.
This is an area based on an awareness of the geographic environment of a particular region and the history of interactions between stakeholders.
As actors on the international stage diversify and conflicts of interest become more complex and intensifying, the need for an integrated understanding of history and geography is increasing for accurate analysis of the current situation and prediction of the future.

One of the reasons economics is difficult is because there are so many theories.
As the pace of change in the world accelerates, more theories will emerge to supplement, critique, and replace existing theories, making economics increasingly complex and difficult to understand.
But there's no need to be scared or intimidated from the start.
More important than memorizing many theories is the mindset of not blindly believing in any theory.
We must keep in mind that in the midst of economic uncertainty, creativity in discovering unexpected variables and flexible thinking that freely crosses the boundaries of various theories to gain insight enable accurate analysis of reality and prediction of the future.

--- p.175

The political and social genres are generally written in a simple structure of 'problem-cause-solution', so the efficiency of understanding can be maximized through structuring.
Before reading a book, first grasping its structure and then fleshing out the structure as you read it will greatly help you remember the book's contents clearly and develop your analytical skills.

Be aware that there is a particular pitfall in sociology books: the titles can be deceiving.
As sociology is an academic discipline that aims to analyze and understand human social behavior, it has the characteristic of approaching problems from a structural perspective to identify causal relationships and derive solutions.
Sociology may seem abstract at first glance, but in fact, the topics covered in this academic field are often closely related to our daily lives.
Sociology studies topics that interest any normal member of society, ranging from social trends such as intergenerational conflict, rising crime rates, suicide rates, and divorce rates, to the culture and customs surrounding living spaces such as home, school, and work, to emotional and psychological problems of members such as apathy, anxiety, and confusion.

Publisher's Review
What should I read and how?

According to Dr. Jeong Jae-seung, thought systems that are already familiar to us do not trigger meaningful brain activity.
What happens in that moment should be seen as an embodied routine rather than a thought.
Just because your brain is working doesn't mean all of its output is thought.

The same goes for reading.
Nietzsche also points out the harm of simple addiction to letters.
He likened it to 'a matchstick that needs to be struck by someone to make it spark', because such reading only fosters passive thinking.
The author talks about active reading and its benefits.
We are examining reading strategies according to the type of book, as well as efforts to acquire a horizon for selecting good books.
When the reader structures the information in a book with his or her own compositional skills, it becomes a narrative of life that goes beyond information.
This book presents a high form of reading, as it is also a question of thought that is directly connected to the kind of life one will lead.
