Publisher's Review
A story that opens a child's heart
The first Changbi Picture Book Award winner, "Holjak Holjak Hororok"

The Changbi Picture Book Award, which began in 2023, is a contest established by Changbi to breathe new life into Korean picture books and encourage the creative desire of picture book authors.
Among the 704 entries submitted to the first Changbi Picture Book Award, 『Holchak Holoc Hororok』 was selected as the grand prize winner and received favorable reviews, saying, “It is a marshmallow-like work with lovely characters that gently lead the story.”
The judges were impressed by the way the work weaves text and images together to express the emotions of the animals.
"Holchak Holochak Hororok" is the second original picture book by author Soyoung Son, who started out as a teacher and then moved into the world of picture books to better understand children's minds.
The author conveys the liveliness of the play in a sensual way by leading the narrative with lively characters and 58 onomatopoeias and mimetic words.
The space where the story unfolds is a place where the animal characters can run around noisily and sleep soundly.
Young readers will enjoy playing with characters just like them in a story, then enjoying a cup of sweet cocoa.

Kkumkkumkkumkkum, bashish, poong, wahaha
Even though we first met, we are friends!

A strange duck and a dog come waddling and hurriedly to the house where the cat lives.
The duck and the puppy, who were both hungry, gulp down the cat's milk without hesitation.
The startled cat's heart boils.
A cat that can't stand it any longer puffs up its body and gets angry, and ends up farting.
The duck and the dog also fart with all their might as they look at the cat who is bowing its head in embarrassment.
The main characters suddenly burst out laughing.
"Hollok Holok Hororok" depicts the process of children meeting for the first time becoming friends.
Children with different personalities may feel unfamiliar with each other, but they quickly become close as they share joyful feelings.
Friends run around here and there, having fun and sometimes getting soaked in water.
The story tells us that if we understand each other's feelings and share the things we like, we can share our hearts.
This is a picture book filled with such joyful laughter that you'll want to laugh along with the main characters.

'Pure warmth' that you'll want to see again and again

The children sip the cocoa given to them by their guardian, the bear, and fall asleep without worry.
The ending, where they lean on each other and spend a comfortable time together, is satisfying to everyone.
Children will feel safe and happy in stories that tell them they can run around and rest as much as they want.
The author wrote the story with the affectionate wish that “everyone who reads the book will have fun and sleep warmly,” thinking of the children and animals he has met along the way.
The characters are drawn with delicate pencils, and the yellow color is used as the main color to convey a bright atmosphere.
『Holchak Holoc Hororok』 will warm the hearts of children and adult readers like a bonfire that melts the cold.

Vivid typography with audible sounds and visible gestures
58 Onomatopoeias and Mimetic Words to Express Emotions

『Holchakhollchak Hororok』 is a 'word play picture book' that is even more fun to read aloud because it contains a wealth of onomatopoeia and mimetic words, and is also a 'typography picture book' that stands out with its font design that symbolically expresses the meaning and situation of words.
With its diverse vocabulary and witty fonts, it makes you laugh like a fart, warmly comforts you, and makes you excitedly anticipate what will happen next.
This work, which started with the idea of creating a picture book using only onomatopoeia and mimetic words, is also based on the 'joy of association' in which the story continues in a chain.
58 onomatopoeias and mimetic words are used in conjunction with the vivid facial expressions and movements of the characters to express a variety of emotions, including joy, sadness, surprise, annoyance, satisfaction, and regret.
Young readers will learn to express their feelings concretely by reading aloud the various expressions contained in the book.
Immerse yourself in a lively story, following the rhythmic handwriting.

It started with the idea of creating a picture book using only onomatopoeia and mimetic words as text.
As I was recalling the expressions in consonant order, a few scenes suddenly came to mind, and in them, young animals laughing, playing, and running around formed the rest of the story.
With this award as a catalyst, I hope to continue creating picture books that are as enjoyable as play and as warm as cocoa.
