Anxiety, nervousness, chest tightness, shortness of breath…
For those who want to strengthen their hearts
Advice from a psychiatrist

Anxiety has no age or gender.
There is only a difference in degree.
As we live, we experience both big and small anxieties.
When I was a student, I was anxious because my grades weren't improving as much as I'd hoped. When I was preparing for employment, I was anxious because I couldn't get a job. As an adult and living in society, I was anxious again about how long I could do this job.
Not only major family events or career-determining events, but even immediate issues like next month's credit card bills can make us anxious.

According to one article, the number of anxiety disorder consultations at mental health welfare centers increased by 44.8% in the first half of this year, from 13,067 last year to 18,931.
Last year, the average monthly number was 1,089, but this year, it has practically tripled to 3,155 ([JoongAng Ilbo], September 30, 2020).
This means that anxiety disorders are not just a problem for a few people.

Professor Han Deok-hyeon, author of the book “It’s Natural to Be Anxious,” says:
Anxiety is a basic human emotion, and if it can be properly managed, the emotion of anxiety itself is not a problem.
When heightened self-awareness stemming from anxiety is combined with a positive attitude and flexible thinking, it can actually help overcome current challenges and lead to further growth.

Into the book
In the past, the average human lifespan was considered to be 60 years, and various aspects of life were described accordingly.
(…) But not now.
Life expectancy has increased to 100 years, and the world changes rapidly even in one or two years, let alone ten.
Unexpected crises, like COVID-19, can occur.
However, humanity has been solely focused on developing life science technology to extend biological lifespan in the age of centenarians, while neglecting the continuous achievement of goals and a sense of accomplishment in human psychological development.
(…) In this way, we (especially those in their 40s and 50s today) are ignorant about the psychological development that will unfold in the remaining years of our lives.
This is where the anxiety begins.

But for middle-aged people who are suffering from anxiety due to ignorance and guilt due to self-deception, talking about success without thinking can cause an explosion of anxiety.
What I am saying is that telling someone who is not well prepared about success out of the blue does not necessarily give them hope or courage.

--- p.9-10, from “Prologue_Everyone is anxious”

In psychiatry, 'insight' refers to 'knowing exactly what I am afraid of now and what the thing that scares me looks like in reality.'
It is no exaggeration to say that helping patients understand this is half the battle of psychological counseling.
In other words, the first step to eliminating anxiety is to find out how much the scary thing that makes me anxious actually threatens me and can harm me.

Let's take a moment to look at all the worries and anxieties that are inherent within us.
Let's look at them indifferently, as if we were strangers.
It's okay to have a little courage and talk to yourself.
'Ah, anxiety has come.'
--- p.28-29, from “Part 1: Everything You Didn’t Know About Anxiety/The Seeds of Anxiety Are Inside My Heart”

When we are physically or psychologically stressed, our body's senses become more sensitive.
This is because we recognize stress more quickly and seek rest or leisure to avoid it.
But most people ignore the sensitive signals their body sends.
Sometimes you just have to ignore those signals.
Because there are mountains of work piled up and you have to complete them to survive in the jungle called work.
Or, as parents, we must faithfully support our children so that they can have a good time during important times in their lives.
Ultimately, external stress disrupted my body's rhythm, making me feel like I wasn't myself.

Everyone has the physical and mental stamina to endure.
Living as 'me' is about thinking and doing things that fit my physical strength.
But we often forget the importance of living as 'me'.

--- p.34-35, from “Part 1: Everything You Didn’t Know About Anxiety/The Heart Beats Thousands of Times a Day”

Nietzsche said this:
“If you want freedom, command.
How can we express and practice the spirit of freedom?
“The history of great liberation is accompanied by pain and suffering.” (…) Good stress reduces anxiety.
When you experience good stress, your anxiety gradually decreases even when you are mentally or physically burdened and tired.
When I feel confident that I can control the situation, my anxiety decreases.
That confidence comes from the lion's free will.
In order for free will to exist, there must first be an 'I'.
Because I must exist for free will to arise.
This athlete was able to come back to himself and gain a new understanding of himself only through the process of dividing the problem into those he could solve and those he could not.

--- p.43-44, from “Part 1: Everything You Didn’t Know About Anxiety/Bad Stress Increases Anxiety”

People who don't want to do anything tend to dwell on past failures.
The fear of failure again makes us avoid even attempts that are similar to those we have already experienced, let alone seeking new stimulation.
Even if you try your best, you will only do so much so that you don't fail.
If you put in a little more effort and don't reap the fruits of success (as you think you will), you won't try any harder because there's no way to get your efforts back.
A failed past is what is holding back your potential for the future.
(…) Whether we have failed or succeeded in the past, we must move forward using that past as a stepping stone.
Positive emotions that drive life, such as anticipation, excitement, hope, and motivation, all point toward the future, and based on these, people gain the strength to live in the present.

--- p.49-51, from “Part 1: Everything You Didn’t Know About Anxiety/Why Life Feels Powerless”

It has been several years since early retirement emerged as a problem in our society.
When was the time when labor was scarce and jobs were plentiful, and you could choose to go anywhere you wanted just by graduating from college?
It is difficult to find an empty seat in the university library because students are preparing for employment from their freshman year.
At work, once you turn 40, you start to feel anxious, thinking, "How long can I do this job?" and "I don't know how to do anything else. What should I do?"
(…) Feeling anxious in a specific situation is because your ability to cope with that situation is immature.
In times like these, everyone can't help but become sensitive.
Because he knows better than anyone that his weapons are not perfect enough to win the war.
(…) I don’t advise people who complain of anxiety to just be confident.
Instead, we discuss together what we need to do to prepare for a crisis situation.
It's more unsettling because you don't know what to prepare.

Publisher's Review
On the race called life
A book I want to share with people who are standing anxiously

But unfortunately, managing anxiety is not easy.
As the author says, the human brain follows instinct rather than reason.
Anxiety immediately stimulates the amygdala, the part of the brain associated with fear.
When negative imaginations about uncertainty are added to this, it eventually turns into a monster that makes us perceive the worst-case scenario as if it were reality.
Panic disorder is a condition that is accompanied by shortness of breath, tremors, chest tightness, headaches, and dizziness.

The author of this book, Professor Han Deok-hyeon, is a sports psychiatrist who has been providing mental coaching to athletes who live with extreme anxiety and tension for a long time.
Of course, I have met countless ordinary people who complain of anxiety.
Based on this, we will properly understand what anxiety is and suggest the right way to manage anxiety.

The author says:
'I want to share this book with people who don't know where they are in the long race called life, people who think their lives are a failure or can't even tell the difference between success and failure, and people who feel anxious because they think they have to succeed for the rest of their lives.'

You're not the only one feeling anxious.
Especially in a situation like today, there is no one who is not anxious.
Wouldn't that fact alone be a great comfort?

In an age where we cannot help but feel anxious,
We need a mental coach

Anxiety is an emotion that everyone carries with them as they live.
As long as desires are not resolved, humans cannot escape anxiety.
If you are destined to be unable to escape anxiety, the author says, try to live a little more comfortably and calmly rather than trying to fight and win.

First, let's understand anxiety properly and move on.
According to the author, anxiety begins with ignorance, that is, ‘not knowing.’
First of all, what I don't know is bad and scary, so I must avoid it.
That is why not knowing brings fear and anxiety.
Moreover, anxiety starts from ‘pretending to know’.
If you lie to yourself that you know something you don't, guilt will torment you.
That's anxiety.

When you add a kind of obligation to this that says, "I have to do this," the anxiety is doubled.
Anxiety explodes when you add the need to get something to a situation where you don't know what will happen.

Anxiety doesn't go away just because you endure it.
We often say that people who can't overcome stress and anxiety are mentally weak, but it's not that simple.
This is precisely why you need the proper advice of an expert.

“I’m anxious too”
Real solutions from honest experts

When we think of experts, we often think of them as people who only talk about theory or who speak in a way that is far from reality.
But this is not the book.

The author, Professor Han Deok-hyeon, says he feels the same way.
Although he appears to be a respectable university professor, psychiatrist, and head of a family, he says that he has been anxious and uneasy about various incidents in his life.
In that sense, this book is also a journey for the author to manage his own anxiety.

The author says that many people who come to the clinic say, “I feel anxious and my chest feels heavy with an inexplicable fear, but I don’t know why.”
But surprisingly, if you talk to them for about 10 minutes, they will know exactly what is stressing them out.
The author says that to figure out what I'm afraid of and how afraid I am right now, I should start by looking at the problem here and now.
Besides these, there are plenty of tips that can really help you manage your anxiety.

As Kierkegaard said, "Anxiety is a strange force that grips humans and renders them immobile." However, anxiety can be effectively managed if you know the right method.
Let's start with the author.
