Description
Book Introduction
“I have experienced throughout my life that darkness can be illuminated and hope can be rekindled.”
The first official autobiography written by Pope Francis himself!

The only book that can help you understand the Pope's actions and their roots.

Conflicts, large and small, continue to rage around the world, including the war between Russia and Ukraine and the conflict between Israel and Palestine.
There is no need to look far.
In Korea, too, as political instability and conflict deepen, expressions of hatred and hostility toward others have become widespread.
However, even in the midst of these social, economic, and political crises, there are those who choose good and strive to open a new future, and so our daily lives continue.
In the midst of the complex flow of our society, some emphasize that we must nevertheless seek out and cultivate ‘hope’ because “no one can be saved alone.”
It is Pope Francis.

Pope Francis's "Hope," which he wrote himself over the course of six years, is the first papal autobiography in history and has been published simultaneously in over 100 countries around the world, attracting significant attention.
The Pope illuminates the most precious value in life, "hope," through colorful episodes, offering strength, comfort, and courage to many who are going through difficult times.
In the preface to this book, the Pope says:
“This book, which weaves together my life, is a story about a journey of hope.
This journey cannot be separated from the journey of my family, my people, and the entire people of God.
This book contains the stories of those who have walked the journey with me through every page and every moment of my life, those who have gone before us, and those who will follow in our footsteps.” Through this first book, in which he looks back on the path he has taken, we can understand the Pope’s steps and, at the same time, dream of what kind of future we will have if we follow that path.
We will move forward on a new path with that firm faith.

Into the book
I too was born into an immigrant family.
My father and grandparents, like so many Italians, emigrated to Argentina and lost everything.
Because I, too, could have been one of those abandoned today, this desperate question always lingers in my mind.
"Why them and not me?" I had to go to Lampedusa to pray, to express my sympathy with them, and to express my gratitude and encouragement to the residents and volunteers of that small island who had set a concrete example of solidarity.
Above all, it was to awaken our sleeping conscience and awaken us all to our responsibilities.
--- From "Chapter 1 My Tongue Will Stick to the Roof of My Mouth"

The human heart is also the first step on every journey toward peace.
Someone might say, like the prophet Jeremiah:
“Oh, Lord God, I do not know how to speak; I am only a child.” (Jeremiah 1:6) He does not know what to say, and he does not know how to make peace.
You may think that it is because you are not educated, you do not have special knowledge, you are not a leader of the country, you are still young, or you are already too old.
Others might say that the world feels too big, too complex, and too distant.
But your home, your neighborhood, your workplace, and your school are never far away.
Even small acts of violence and harassment in everyday life can eventually become the seeds of aggression and war.
Our brothers and sisters are never far away either.
In the Gospel, Jesus himself tells us what our attitude should be.
“I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned and revealed them to mere fools.” (Matthew 11:25)
--- From "Chapter 2: I've Been with a Crowd That Hates Peace for Too Long"

For me, Christmas has always been a doubly joyful day.
Because it is the day I received the sacrament of baptism.
The day of your baptism is another birthday, the day of your spiritual birth.
It is the day we are given the gift of our earthly life and the roots of eternal life, and the day we are reborn forever.
We must remember this day.
Because the flame of faith that was lit that day needs to be continuously nourished.
If Christmas is a time for giving and receiving gifts, then I received the most precious gift one could receive that day.
Because the sacrament of baptism is a pure gift given without any cost.
No one, whether child or adult, is worthy of receiving the sacrament of baptism.
Rather, we must carefully nurture this vibrant seed so that it can take root and bear fruit.
Baptism is a gift that makes us children of God.
It brings us the joy of salvation and tells us that we do not have to grope alone in the darkness of history.
It is a gift that makes us part of God's people.

It's sad to see that in our society today, harsh language and rudeness seem to be considered a sign of confidence.
This is true in our personal lives as well as in public settings.
Soft speech, consideration, and gratitude are often seen as weaknesses and sometimes even objects of distrust.
But we have to go against this trend.
We must start with the family, the foundation of society.
I can never give up on developing a heart of gratitude and consideration.
Because human dignity and social justice begin with these small words.
If we lose this mindset at home, it will be difficult to find it in the larger society.
Especially for believers, gratitude is at the heart of faith.
An ungrateful Christian is like someone who has forgotten the language of the kingdom of God.
--- From "Chapter 4, At the End of the World"

I can still vividly remember the smell of that pizza.
Maybe it's like Proust's madeleine to me.
In fact, eating pizza outside is one of the little pleasures I miss the most.
I really liked walking.
Even during my time as a cardinal, I used to walk the streets and take the subway.
Some people found it strange and advised me to take the car, but sometimes reality is just that simple.
It was just nice to walk.
The street taught me a lot.
I like everything about the city.
Above ground and underground, on the streets and in the squares, in the taverns, everything is great, and eating pizza at an outdoor table is especially incomparable to delivery pizza.
I am a city person through and through.
--- From "Chapter 7: Playing on the Land He Made"

“He called us with mercy” This means that the moment Jesus looked at Matthew, his merciful gaze already contained a choice.
Later, I adopted these words as my bishop's motto, and then as my papal motto.
I understood this to mean that “the Lord shaped him with mercy,” just as a craftsman carefully creates a piece of art, just as my grandfather Francis shaped wood into furniture in his carpentry shop.
Years later, when I was praying the Latin Divine Office and came across this passage, I realized that the Lord had been shaping me like a craftsman in His mercy.
--- From "Chapter 11 Like an Almond Branch"

Many years have passed.
I am very happy at my house in Santa Marta.
Because we live with many people.
Of course, there are some inconveniences, but they are worth it.
I will stay here until the day God calls me.
I have a very realistic attitude towards my death.
The same thing happens when someone mentions the risk of assassination.
When the time comes, I will be buried in the Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption, not in the Basilica of St. Peter.
The Vatican is only my final home, not my eternal resting place.
Now used as a candle-keeping room, I will rest beside the Queen of Peace, whom I have always relied on and whose grace I have embraced more than a hundred times during my pontificate.
So, all the funeral preparations for me have been completed.
The Pope's funeral was so grand that we discussed it with the person in charge and simplified it.
They decided to do away with the elaborate funeral altar and the special ceremony of closing the coffin.
I want to maintain dignity, but do it simply like other Christians.
--- From "Chapter 17: Remembering the Past and Feeling Ashamed"

Publisher's Review
Simultaneously published in 100 countries worldwide!
Pope Francis, who has dedicated his life to the world church and peace for humanity,

A story about everything you dream of until the last moment of your life.

Pope Francis, whose real name is Jorge Mario Bergoglio.
The first Latin American pope, elected as the 266th pope of the Catholic Church in 2013, looks back on his life in his autobiography, "Hope."
Originally scheduled to be published after the Pope's death, the book was decided to be published specifically for the Catholic Church's Jubilee Year in 2025, under the theme "Pilgrims of Hope."
In this age where hope is needed, it is to help people around the world live with love and courage.
The book unfolds sequentially from Chapter 1 to Chapter 25, following the life cycle of the Pope.
The first half begins with the story of ancestors who immigrated from Italy to Argentina, and introduces various experiences from childhood, including the pain of war experienced by the parents' generation.
Moving into the latter half, the book covers his struggles in his youth, his discernment of his priestly calling and his passionate pastoral work in the Jesuit community, the behind-the-scenes story just before his election as Pope, the reason he chose the name Francis and came to live in the Casa Santa Marta, and various stories about his efforts to end war and achieve peace during his papacy.
Additionally, previously unreleased photos are included, adding to the viewing enjoyment.

“Now we have entered a new year of grace, a year in which we can experience deeply in our hearts the sure hope of salvation.
We are all beloved children of God, created to accomplish great things and dream bold dreams.”
― From the text

A 'story of life' that will captivate readers around the world,
Pope Francis' Spiritual Legacy for Future Generations
What kind of world did he dream of?

Pope Francis' first official autobiography, Hope, fully reflects the author's characteristics.
In covering his personal journey from childhood to becoming Pope, he is particularly notable for his deep reflections, as he honestly admits to mistakes made in his youth, reflects on them, and strives to live a better life.
He calmly reveals his deep inner self through his confession, “What I did that day was not a simple mistake, but an indifference to the poor.”
Also, “We must first ask for forgiveness from young people before we judge them.
“We have failed to listen to their desperate voices, to treat them seriously, and to light a fire in their hearts,” he says, delivering a heartfelt message of courage and comfort to young people and the poor and marginalized living in today’s anxious and fluid society.

What is particularly striking about this book is the Pope's easy and warm writing style.
He tells his story honestly and frankly through various works of art and anecdotes, conveying things that anyone can likely experience in life in a relatable way.
In particular, the scene where he kissed the feet of South Sudanese political leaders and pleaded for peace shows the small and humble attitude of service of a person in the highest position.
The Pope makes us reflect on how we should live in the world, declaring that we can do anything to uphold the values we believe are right, to dream of a future with hope, and to overcome the divisions of this land and achieve peace.
This book goes beyond a simple memoir and feels like an invitation from the Pope to open a new world to many people.
Rather than making theological and doctrinal appeals to the major controversies of modern society, the Pope delivers teachings on justice, peace, and love in a way that is easily understandable to everyone.
So even non-Catholics can easily read this book.

Let's make ourselves small.
Let's make it humble.
Let us become servants of others.
Let us cultivate generosity, gentleness, and humility.
This is a simple mindset and small practice that the Apostle Paul taught to the believers in Ephesus, the early church community.
It is also a teaching to achieve peace and unity in the world and human society.
It is a teaching that is still valid today.
― From the text

“True hope is
Not trapped in the dark, not caught up in the past,
“The power of the mind that knows how to look forward to tomorrow without settling for the present.”

Father Lee Jae-hyeop of the Archdiocese of Seoul and the Korean translation team of Vatican News participated in the translation of this book, which the Pope spent a long time working on.
Their love for sharing news about Pope Francis with Korean believers has further enhanced the quality of the book.
As a result, extensive annotations not included in the original text have been added, which greatly assist Korean readers in understanding the history and culture of Europe and Latin America, figures who influenced the Pope, and frequently mentioned expressions that may be somewhat unfamiliar to them.
Even though he has been Pope for 12 years, Pope Francis is still considered one of the most influential leaders in the world and is known as the “Pope of the Poor” for his dedication to caring for the socially disadvantaged and marginalized.
He is a constant role model for many people, always being humble and easygoing rather than showing off his authority.
For those who have ever wondered where his attitude toward life came from, this book is enough.

At the end of the book, the Pope describes himself as “a mere passing step,” and pledges to continue on a better path as a Christian and “servant of the servants of God” until the end of his life.
After completing the translation, the co-translators of this book commented, “This book is more than just an autobiography or memoir; it is a spiritual testament and a dialogue between the Pope and our times.”
"Hope" can be said to be a concise compilation of the stories the Pope wanted to leave behind until the end of his life.
The Pope has preserved in this book the precious values he has engraved in his heart through the unforgettable experiences he has endured at every turn of his life, the truthful records he has tried to convey to the world until the very end, and his message of 'hope', all set against the backdrop of tragic modern history.
Through this book, we will come to understand that God “created us as hope itself,” and why we must move toward “hope.”
From Italy to Argentina, and then to the Vatican, Iraq, Japan, and Mongolia, if we follow in his footsteps as he continues to search for 'hope,' we too will blossom with 'hope' this coming spring.

Gentle love is never weakness.
It's true power.
The strongest and bravest have walked this path.
Let us continue this fight with gentle love and courage.
You too, walk this path.
Join this fight with gentle love and courage.
