Description
Book Introduction
A revised edition of bestselling youth author Kim Ha-yeon's masterpiece, "The House That Crosses Time," has been published!

What you really want is
It's not a chance to go to another time, it's 'happiness'

“As you walk the path of life, holding hands
“You will definitely meet people who will share warmth with you.”
- A story of those who were ‘alone’ becoming ‘together’!

"The House That Crossed Time" became a bestseller and steady seller for young adults as soon as it was published.
It has been praised by various organizations, including the Literature Sharing Selection, Gyeongnam Reading Festival Selection, and Morning Reading Recommendation, and has been selected as the 'One City, One Book' in each region, including Yongin City's Book of the Year, Guro's Book, and Ansan's Book, and is still being read by teenagers as a 'One Book per Semester' book in each middle and high school.
The cover of the newly renovated book, published five years ago, features an illustration that ties in with "If You Were There: The House Across Time 2," and the "white sneakers," a key medium in the story, stand out.

Four children, each with their own wounds, gather in the 'House of Time', which is visible only to children wearing white sneakers.
When these four people gather together, time in the world stops.
And on the last day of the year, they stand before three doors in the 'House of Time' that allow them to choose between the past, present and future.
If that opportunity came to you, what choice would you make?

Into the book
I hope you don't turn away from your mother just because she looks scary and unfamiliar.
Have you ever wondered why your mother insisted on continuing chemotherapy? It was probably for your own good, not your own.
I guess he wanted to somehow get better and stay by your side.
So, come visit and talk often so that you won't regret it later.
If you are not feeling well enough to have a conversation, talk to yourself.
Always tell your mother how much you love her.
I didn't do that, and I still regret it.
If I were given a pair of white sneakers, I would go back in time without hesitation and meet my father again.
And I will tell you that I love you.
I hope you don't make the same mistakes I did.

If you have any questions or difficulties, please write to me anytime.
The Butler of Time says that all he has left is time.

--- p.126

There is a rule that you must come out at least three times a week, but there is no rule about how long you can stay.
I like to laze around in that house all day.
I won't say the absurd thing of telling you to shake off the past and get back on your feet.
Even adults can't do that.
I hope you suffer and are in pain enough.
It's natural to feel tired and scared after going through such a horrific experience.
Honestly, I think our life is 'suffering' (you know this much, right?).
It means that life is full of bitter and painful things.
Life is 'hard', but we still have to 'Go'.
Saying this might not make sense now, but the world is so vast that it cannot be compared to a second-year classroom at Jinseong Girls' Middle School.
As you walk the path of life, you will surely meet people who will hold your hand and share warmth with you.
As if you've already met people like that.

--- p.149

When I first came to this house, I thought I would naturally choose the door to the future.
If possible, I wanted to go to the future five years in the future and become a college student.
But as I was reading the old man's letter over and over again, this thought suddenly occurred to me.
I did nothing wrong, so why do I have to go to the future?
The House of Time promises a new life for those who choose the Door to the Future, filling the gap in time they've left behind. But can that truly be called their own? What if, living in the present, they have the opportunity to meet wonderful people like the members?
--- p.151

“How do you know?”
Yuna made a bewildered face.

“I told you earlier.
I would have done the same thing if I were in your shoes.
If you were bullied, I wouldn't have done it.
Even though Jong-eun and Se-eun were scared, they would have mustered up their courage to stay by your side until the end.”
“So you’re swearing at me now? I tried hard at first, too.
Of course, it's their fault.
Besides, the four of us were best friends.
But I couldn't do it.
If I keep taking your side, I'll be ostracized too.
I'm not saying I did a good job.
But if any kid in our class was in that situation, they would have ignored you.
It's really absurd that you're blaming me now.
“It wasn’t me who started harassing you, it was Jong-eun and Se-eun.”
"okay.
I know too.
But when you turned your back on me too… …it hurt even more than when I was bullied by them.”
Tears flowed down Jayoung's dry cheeks.

“You’ll make excuses by saying they started it first.
But no one knows how much something hurts.”
--- pp.166-167

Jayoung took a deep breath of the cold wind and looked up at the House of Time one last time.
This house will one day welcome children who consider themselves unfortunate.
The new members will climb the stone steps in white sneakers, their hearts pounding with doubt, anxiety, and hope.

Dreaming of a happier life than now.

Today, Jayoung must make a choice.
You can no longer make choices just for yourself.
Jayoung has already made up her mind.
I'm a little uneasy about whether my choice is right, but I'm not as scared as I used to be.
I will stand up as bravely as everyone worried about me.
No one will let anyone bother them.
Jayoung climbed the stone steps and opened the front door.

--- p.227

“There are quite a few things in this world that cannot be undone.
A baby just born, harsh words spoken to someone, the death of a loved one, and time.
Even God cannot control the time in which people live.
This house is the only one that can do that.
How will you use this amazing and tremendous opportunity that comes only once?
For yourself? Or for your family and friends? Whatever choice you make, I hope it will make you happier than you are now.
Because what this house really wanted to give you was not the opportunity to start a new life in the future or the past, but happiness.
Okay, who wants to go up first?

Publisher's Review
One choice that will change your life!
“If I had to choose between the past, present, and future doors,
What will you choose?”

In "The House That Crosses Time," children with their own wounds appear.
Jayoung, a victim of school violence, Seonmi, who is growing weary by her mother's side with terminal pancreatic cancer, Leesu, who is traumatized by her parents' neglect as a child, and Kangmin, who is keeping a secret.

The children who had been struggling alone with no one to lean on begin to understand each other and open their hearts little by little in the House of Time.
But one day before the day of choice, Isu goes out to help Jayoung, who is being bullied at school, and ends up committing a terrible act.
In a whirlwind of unexpected events, the story rushes to a climax without being able to predict what will happen even an inch ahead.
Will the children be able to avoid missing this one-time opportunity? And on Choice Day, which door will each of them choose?

“I believe that no matter what hardship one faces, one can find comfort through other people.
“I hope that someone like that will be with you on your path.”
-From the creative notes

Seonmi is a girl who deliberately stays away from school and stays alone because she doesn't want to talk about her mother, who is in the final stages of pancreatic cancer, and she doesn't want to see her friends' harmonious families.
Ja-young, who is bullied by her close friends, is worried about becoming a burden to her mother who is taking care of her youngest sibling, so she silently endures her suffering alone in the classroom where no one is on her side.
Su-i, who suffered from childhood trauma, thinks of himself as a 'psychopath' and draws a clear line between himself and his mother, calling her 'over there' instead of 'Mom'.

These children resemble countless other teenagers who endure loneliness alone, with no one to lean on, either at home or at school.
The children gathered at the 'House of Time' initially only think about making choices for themselves, but gradually they begin to think about what choices they should make for each other.
'The House of Time' was not simply an opportunity to choose between the past and the future, but also an opportunity for clumsy children to learn how to rely on others.

“Life is full of bitter and painful things.
Life is 'hard', but you still have to 'Go'."
-In the text

The stories in 'The House That Crosses Time' are not all bright and beautiful.
The comfort that only good things will happen in the future is just an empty consolation.
What makes the comfort offered by "The House Across Time" even more touching is that it doesn't dare offer "easy comfort."
The world is not easy, so there will definitely be hard times ahead, but you will definitely meet people who will help you endure the hard times together.

Even if the memories of the children who chose the Gate of Time fade, the courage and hope they held in their hearts will never disappear.
Author Kim Ha-yeon shows her firm belief and affection for young people that no matter what the future holds, if they have someone to hold their hand, everything will be okay.
As we close the final chapter of "The House Across Time," we look forward to the children's steps forward, supported by their strong support.
Because I will no longer be afraid of tomorrow, as I will be comforted and consoled by people.

Author's Note

Five years after its publication, "The House Across Time" has been given a new cover.
This book has been accompanied by many good fortunes.
As this is my first young adult novel, I feel a pang of affection just by reciting the title.
As a writer, I was very happy to receive so much love from readers.

"The House That Crosses Time" started from a picture I happened to see while surfing the internet.
Beneath the painting of a pair of old shoes was this phrase:
'If you wear these shoes, you can choose between the past, present, and future.
'Where are you going?' That image lingered in my mind for a while, and it began to blend with the emotions that were troubling me at the time.
The helplessness I felt as I lost a friend who was seriously ill, the anger I felt when I read about a gaming addict father who abused his young child, and the brutal school violence incidents that constantly make the headlines.
"The House Across Time" began to be built little by little from a collection of emotions that could not be ignored.

After publishing this book, I met many young people in various places.
There are still young people in our society who need a sanctuary like a 'house of time', and yet they are so sparkling and beautiful.
Every time I encounter young people, I resolve to become a writer who views the world from their perspective, while preserving their affection and affectionate gaze.
