Invest in destruction
Description
Book Introduction
The choice of 100 youth judges!
2025 5th Teen Story King Winner
“You must destroy the future.”
In a world dominated by predictive systems, where the advancement of artificial intelligence has relegated most people to simple labor, can humans truly envision their futures in a vibrant way? What if the only future they face is destruction? The winner of the 5th Teen Story King literary award, chosen by 100 middle and high school students nationwide, "Invest in Destruction" poses crucial questions for us living in this chaotic reality.
This is the first full-length novel for young adults by Hwang Seong-sik, who won the Excellence Award in the short and medium-length novel category at the 3rd Korea Science Literature Award and the 8th Kyobo Bookstore Story Contest, under the new pen name Hwang I-gyeong.
In the near future, high school seniors across the Republic of Korea will be given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to receive investment from the entire nation.
However, only students who pass both the graduation exam and the future prediction test, also known as 'Miyet', are selected as investment targets.
Miyette is a government-run system that scans students' brains to predict their future potential and, with a very small margin of error, identifies individuals who will achieve success in various fields of society.
A new investment system is at work, allowing everyone to invest in their future and reap enormous returns.
But on the day everyone was waiting for, the Miyette results were announced, and two children with unusually special abilities were selected.
Baek So-mang, the 'destroyer' who will destroy the world, and Choi Seon, the 'prophet' who predicts the future.
Amidst the chaos and fear of the crowd, the two children face an unexpected fate and struggle to find their way forward, facing a future of destruction.

Publisher's Review
◆ Baek So-mang, a destroyer who believes in the power of positive switches
"If you don't invest in me, your future is doom! Everyone, invest in doom!"
Baek So-mang, a third-year student at Daebakdeng High School, has always been last in her class.
The nickname is 'Not Hope, Just Mang (亡)'.
And just like the nicknames my friends gave me, I thought my life couldn't get any better.
Then, So-Mang happened to read about the 'power of positive switches' in a book, and after believing in her own small potential and working hard for three months, she passed the graduation exam.
Although I achieved miraculous results, the reaction from those around me was cold.
After her father, who had helped her family through investments, passed away, her mother, who was obsessed with making a living as a simple laborer, felt that her hopeful dreams were nothing more than empty and unrealistic.
So-mang, who pulled up the positive switch that was about to go down and participated in Miyet, does not give up the hope that she, too, can become an investment target and change the future of her mother and herself in one fell swoop.
However, a brain scan unexpectedly reveals that So-mang is specifically identified as a 'destroyer'.
Special Targets are students with twelve unique abilities, possessing unique abilities that "can only be discovered" and have only appeared once in the history of Miyette.
While everyone looks at him with fear as if he has already destroyed the world, So-mang uses his positivity to shout out.
If you don't invest in yourself, your future will be ruined.
So invest in destruction.
◆ Choi Seon, the prophet who only wishes for destruction while eating cake
“The world is completely ruined.
“A reset is needed.”
Before the results of the Miyet announcement were announced, there was someone who told Somang, while eating a cake, that “if we don’t get investment this time, we’ll end up destroying the world.”
Choi Seon, a third-year student at Chowoo High School.
Introducing herself as Sunny, she was announced, contrary to people's wishes, as the 'prophet' they had been waiting for.
If there was a prophet, all futures could be known, so to speak, it meant the completion of a future prediction system.
But Sunny, as if she doesn't care about the people's cheers, just makes her first prediction with an indifferent expression.
That kid right there is the destroyer, and he's going to destroy the world.
In a world where the future prediction system is in operation, if her abilities are added, it will be a perfect future, so why does Sunny only dream of destruction?
◆ A new destiny and future for those who become voluntary villains
“I will continue to give myself chances.
Since no one gives me a chance, I have to do it too.
“To fall from a single setback is true ruin.”
Somang uses Sunny's prophecy as a shortcut, but she can't quite believe in her own destiny as a destroyer or Sunny's ability as a prophet.
However, as things actually happen as Sunny predicted, So-mang gradually begins to trust Sunny's absurd words.
And as we get closer to the truth of the system that runs society, we begin to exercise true free will as we confront our own future, which is determined by the words and evaluations of others.
Sunny also knows through the prophecy in her head that So-mang is the destroyer she has been waiting for, but she is confused by So-mang's attitude of trying to deny the prophesied future and even accepting failure.
We know everything about the future, but we don't think about fighting it directly.
The positive energy of Hope, so different from her own, reawakens the dopamine in Sunny's heart, which had been unable to stop thinking about the prophecy until she ate something sweet.
The story, which seems to be rushing towards a big show, brings us before an unavoidable question.
Now, it's up to you to decide.
Would you invest in destruction?
From the comments of the youth jury
It feels like a satire on the current state of society based on AI and the future of youth. Looking at the current state of our country, it seems like a story that could happen in the future.
I hope adults will read it at least once.
Son Su-bin, a first-year student at Miryang Girls' High School
Because the material was fresh, I read it all without realizing the time passing while sitting down.
This is a book that will resonate with teenagers who are at a loss as to what they like, what they are good at, and what career they should have.
- Go Hye-won, 3rd year student at Pyeongchon Middle School
Every line and sentence pierces the heart like a needle! The story effectively portrays the process of children navigating a world created and established by adults, finding their own path, through the lens of the future "investment system."
-Kim Na-yul, first year student at Sangchon Middle School
This is the life of students in our country.
I'm just living my life immersed in private education without even knowing what I want or what I want to do.
Also, we choose our profession based on our surroundings or what adults say.
And we are not born with just one destiny.
My life is my choice.
We must all invest in destruction.
-Noh Min-seok, 3rd year student at Pyeongtaek Middle School
It seemed like the youth were just deciding on their future out of fear and hesitation.
To those who feel lost and hesitant, thinking that the path ahead is set, it seems to tell them that they will succeed someday, that it is okay to fail, and that it is okay to have hope.
-Oh Su-ah, 2nd year student at Sanbon High School
It vividly portrays the state of our society, where young people with limitless potential are limited by their surroundings and live without a clear idea of what they truly want.
Can we say that we live as 'me', thinking and making decisions without being able to escape the gaze of society?
The process by which So-mang, who was branded a destroyer by the so-called Miyette, rewrites his destiny gives hope to the youth of this era who are constantly worried and frustrated in the face of an uncertain future.
-Lee Seo-yoon, 2nd year student at Gyeonghwa Girls' High School
It presented an overwhelming sense of immersion that no one expected.
It is a novel that is truly filled with both thrill and wonder.
I hope that other students who read this book will also be able to invest in the passionate emotions that well up from deep within their hearts.
-Lee Ye-won, first year student at Cheonbo Middle School
This is an attractive book with the message that one must choose and create one's own destiny through one's own will, without being swayed by the gaze or voice of others.
It seems like there are too many children who don't know their true self and worth because they are so concerned about what other people think.
So, I hope that after reading this book, you will live your life paying more attention to your true self-worth than to the labels given to you, just like the main character, Somang.
-Lee Eun-seo, 2nd year, Suwonbuk Middle School
A book that tells us that destruction is nothing to fear! I believe all young people preparing for the CSAT will relate to this book.
It was a book that ruined my plans to read it intermittently.
It was a story that kept me hooked until 2 a.m.
-Jang Jin-ah, 2nd year student at Balsan Middle School
The expression that fate is not something that is decided and followed, but rather something we choose among countless crossroads, really resonated with me and left a deep impression.
It felt like watching a well-written drama rather than an unconditional fantasy novel.
A book that will completely change your stereotypes and way of thinking about 'fate'.
If you've ever thought about 'destruction', or if you ever think about it, pick up this book.
