The Moon That Doesn't Cry
Description
Book Introduction
I want to protect you even if it means giving you my share of breath
Do you have someone precious to you?
The first novel by bestselling picture book author Lee Ji-eun

Author Lee Ji-eun, who has repeatedly renewed the originality of Korean picture books with vivid stories and innocent illustrations that extend from her unique imagination, meets readers for the first time as a novelist.
The novel "The Moon That Doesn't Cry," written and illustrated by Lee Ji-eun herself, tells the story of the moon that fell from the sky to the ground one day.
It tells the story of the moon's life on this cruel yet beautiful land, as if it were a poem or a love song, pure and warm.
Coming down to Earth, she takes in a young child who lost his parents in war, and as she feeds and raises the child alongside the lone wolf Kana, how will the moon change and what will she realize? The author offers these answers, which ultimately connect to where we come from and what we live for, like a precious treasure, wrapped in a multi-layered narrative.
This story, written with a gentle touch for the youth and adults who grew up reading her picture books, will perhaps be a source of deep emotion and comfort to those who, like the moon long ago, are lost and wandering at this very moment.
This is a beautiful novel that we, who have been hurt but still live on, should not miss today.

Into the book
The moon wished.
May you be shattered into pieces smaller than dust, leaving behind not a single particle of yourself.
May no one be able to pray to himself.

--- p.11

Those who were well-educated shouted that they had to protect the land and spirit of the people with guns and cannons, those who had much to gain listed all that would be gained if they won the war, and those who held weapons in their hands fired their guns every day somewhere, saying that the enemies would devour this country.
Their language was engaging and simple, making big decisions easy.

--- p.18

The moon opened its mouth softly.
“Life isn’t perfect.”
It was the first time.
The moon felt like it wanted to comfort someone.

--- p.23

“With your courage.”
Kana conveyed the wolf's greeting.
The wolves believed that consideration required great courage, so this greeting was used to mean, "I will not forget your consideration."

--- p.52

The moon often looked up at the sky.
It was an unconscious act of checking the sky without confidence, but I was learning about the principles of the earth through the movements of constellations and stars.
Of course, it was also because the night sky was beautiful.

--- p.63

Soon a heavy rain poured down.
The child went into a corner, put his head on his knees, and wrapped his arms around his legs.
My body trembled.
“It will stop soon.
They say nothing in this world lasts forever.
“I fell from the sky too.”
--- p.88

“What happens now?”
Kana smelled the piece that fell from the moon.
“I’m curious about that too…….”
The moon picked up a dandelion with only the stem left.
“If everything breaks and becomes small, I guess it will become a star.”
--- p.101

The child's scent was spreading quickly.
The invitation has been sent.
To those who should never come.

--- p.109

"Isn't that funny? I've really turned into a half-moon."
The moon wanted to comfort Kana, who was looking at it with a worried face.

--- p.123

'I hope that I can send that child safely to the land of humans... '
A smile came to my face at the unexpected prayer that came to my mind, but the mouthless moon could not smile.

--- p.136

The moon became as desired.
The kind face, the ears that listened to prayers, and the traces of tears were all gone.
The moon just became the moon.

Publisher's Review
“For the first time, I had a reason to exist.”
The moon that fell from the sky to the ground tells us
The reason we are here together now

The novel begins with the moon in the sky listening to all the prayers of humans.
They keep calling out to the moon, saying, “Dalnim, Dalnim,” and clasping their hands together.
Since there is no omnipotent power that can answer that prayer, the moon just wants to close its ears and disappear from the world.
But then, suddenly, for some unknown reason, the moon falls to the ground.
You can close your eyes, sprout hands, and even move your body.
But then, from somewhere, the faint sound of a child crying is heard.
The moon feels that there is nothing she can do for the human child, but a wolf appears and saves the child.
The wolf's name is Kana.
Thus begins a new page of life for the moon, Kana, and Ai.

The child grows up.
Eat a lot, play a lot, learn a lot, get sick and recover a lot.
And Kana is there for every moment as the child grows.
Even though Kana plays happily with her child, she disciplines him through strict rules, and is constantly worried that the child will get sick or go hungry.
The moon is so strange and mysterious.
What motivates Kana? While exploring and studying the flora and fauna of the land she's first set foot on, she also wants to observe and learn more about Kana and Ai.

However, wild boars that have lost their habitats due to human wars and destruction of nature are always on the lookout for them.
Eventually, the moment comes when you can no longer avoid the wild boars… … .
What must the moon, Cana, and Ai do, and what can they do? The surprising plot twist, where the white, round moon's body cracks and crumbles, turning into a crescent moon, and finally finds itself before a dark waterfall that could determine life and death, races toward the final page.

Moss and trees, wind and stones, and you
I sang with a heart that blesses all living things.
Beautiful story

Author Lee Ji-eun, winner of the Bologna Ragazzi Award, has received praise from both children and adults for her picture books, including The Legend of Patbingsu, Iparapa Nyamunyamu, The Legend of a Friend, and Tsutsutsutsu.
It combines elements of reality and fantasy, displays deep emotional expression, and its positive message of respect for nature and community shines through.
The author's first novel also continues that world of works.
As we follow the allegorical protagonists, the Moon and the Wolf, as they go about their familiar daily lives, we come to feel that they contain insights into life and relationships.

In particular, the changes in the moon, which wandered without knowing why it should exist, and Kana's unwavering devotion warm the hearts of readers.
The moon was always by the child's side, even though he didn't know it.
And the moon grew like a child.
Dal experiences 'being together' by enduring pain to prepare food for the child and participating in games such as tag and water splashing.
And he realizes that Kana and Ai, whom he had thought of as mere objects of observation, were actually the ones who protected him.

The moon wondered if this was happiness.
For the moon, emotions were as difficult a task as finding out the age of an ageless mouse.
I never figured out what happiness was, but only after the rainbow disappeared did I realize that moment was truly beautiful.
(Page 92)

What should we call the change of sentiment that has seeped into the heart of the moon, which had long wished to simply disappear from the world?
Can we call it love, or pride?
In a sad reality where many people, especially in the midst of adolescence, lose their meaning in life, wander, and even give up on life, "The Moon That Doesn't Cry" conveys a beacon of hope that we must restore.

A meeting of beautiful pictures and concise language
A book like a gift that will restore forgotten love

Several illustrations that harmoniously blend with the story shine between the pages of the book.
The strange and beautiful journey of the moon, Kana, and the child, and the colorful changes of day, night, and seasons that follow, captivate the heart.
Readers can project themselves into the story and breathe together, moving between the roles of 'reader' and 'viewer.'
This lyrical painting, different from the style seen in previous picture books, will be a precious gift to readers who have cherished the author's work.

The author's virtues of delicately handling relationships and emotions and naturally incorporating universal themes into fantastical settings are also evident in the novel.
The sentences, written in a simple style and avoiding long-winded exaggeration or decoration, evoke an unfamiliar feeling at every point.
The small ripples of emotion that come from encountering concise sentences create larger concentric circles as the story progresses, stirring the heart.

“It will stop soon.
They say nothing in this world lasts forever.
“I fell from the sky too.” (Page 88)

“If everything breaks and becomes small, I guess it will become a star.” (Page 101)

"Isn't that funny? I've really turned into a crescent moon." (Page 123)

Through the harmony of beautiful pictures and language, "The Moon That Doesn't Cry" approaches readers without hesitation and unfolds a wondrous story.
The story of the moon that fell from the sky, the old and lonely wolf Kana, and the child who grows up under the care of the moon and the wolf after losing his parents in war leaves a lasting impression.
It will captivate and resonate with each generation, from youth grappling with inner storms and questioning the meaning of life to adults reminiscing and yearning for the past.
This is a special novel that will penetrate your heart, reminding you that we are not alone here and now, and that the hands of nature, nurturing and caring for us, and its loving care are still with us.
