Book Introduction
Since its first publication in 1979, it has touched 600,000 readers.
A classic of our time, “Loving and Forgiving”!
Readers who have read 『The Splendid Lunch of a Mountain Monk』
The very book that I first found out about and forcibly summoned,
Reborn as a reprinted edition after 33 years since the 1991 expanded edition!

A year ago, in May 2023, a craze for Monk Hyangbong swept through the Buddhist publishing world.
Monk Hyangbong, who made a name for himself with the pen name “Loving and Forgiving” together with Monk Beopjeong and Monk Ohyeon in the 1980s, has made a comeback after 44 years by publishing “The Splendid Lunch of a Mountain Monk.”
It entered the bestseller list immediately after its publication and remained at the top spot for several months.
The monk's journey through life and his intense period of seeking the truth resonated with readers' hearts as he lived as one with the truth.
The simple yet delicious writing style remained the same.
The writings of Monk Hyangbong are expressed as 'a couple of teardrops'.
As I follow the cheerfully flowing sentences, a smile spreads across my face, but before I know it, my heart becomes heavy and heartbreaking.
I can't turn the page without shedding a few tears.
Eventually, readers began to recall “Loving and Forgiving,” which had sold over 600,000 copies since its first edition in 1979.
Whenever the topic of Monk Hyangbong came up, “Loving and Forgiving” was always mentioned, and voices demanding its republication grew louder.

“Loving and Forgiving” is truly a true story.
While filled with the young performer's yearning for freedom and anguish, his warm heart toward people and the world is beautifully conveyed in a tearful way.
In an age when people don't read books, this is a great opportunity to deeply immerse yourself in the nostalgia of old writings.
And if you read it together with 『The Splendid Lunch of a Mountain Monk』, you can once again reflect on the meaning of life by encountering both the energetic and youthful monk Hyangbong and the free and leisurely monk Hyangbong.

Into the book
"With that pure heart that sent messages by registered mail at Christmas and New Year's, why couldn't you have given a gift to the young one? Didn't you learn the beauty of forgiveness and breathe warm love into him? Didn't he respond to my five-year-old gift with a big, beautiful, and warm gift?"

The duck hunting dog's name was Ddoldol, and the female shepherd was Gapsooni and the male was Gapdol.
But these puppies played with me quite a bit during the day, but at night, they would think of their mother dog and whine so much that it was so noisy and pitiful that I couldn't sleep.
So, I showed my compassion and invited the three puppies into my room and let them sleep with me for a few days, but now, at night, they always scratch at the door bars and whine, begging me to stay overnight.
So, after looking after the puppies' circumstances one way or another, the bedding and the room were filled with the smell of puppies.

I want to be a 'rags monk' not only on the outside but also on the inside, a 'rags monk' with no disguise. However, the truth is that my daily life, which is full of lies and embellishments, is overflowing with the sorrow of a mother who cannot cry out loud, like the grave of an illegitimate child.
I can't help but feel sad that the 'Ddongjappae Monk' that the kids at Haeinsa Temple gave me is gradually turning into 'Ddongjadeohan Monk'.

--- p.37

“Buddha, Buddha! How can you be so cruel that you seduce innocent young women, cut off their hair, and tell them not to drink, not to smoke, not to eat meat, not to eat women. How can you only choose the good things in the world and say no?
“Sometimes I want to see my mother, see my grandchildren, and have a good time, but I, young Ja-am, am always timid because I have to be careful about what you think.”
--- p.67

On the day of that meeting, Monk Jeongbong left Cheongpyeongsa Temple, ignoring my attempts to dissuade him.
After about two weeks, Monk Jeongbong's silence expanded into eternal silence, and he was found frozen to death in the valley of Cheoneunsa Temple in Jirisan.
Just like in the Seokgul of Cheongpyeongsa Temple, he sat cross-legged like the Dharma of Shaolin Cave in a cave located in the valley behind Cheoneunsa Temple, leaning against the cave wall, and cast away the hard and tough shadows of this world.

While boiling medicine in a mountain temple, and especially while boiling medicine in a completely deserted winter temple, I had some rather odd thoughts.
At times like this, I sometimes think how nice it would be to have a daughter who would buy me some eye candy.
Sometimes I think about how nice it would be if a little girl, eating candy, watched over me with those innocent, thoughtless eyes while I was taking my medicine.

Anyway, it's something to live and see.
Even those who once praised suicide, such as Goethe and Schopenhauer, enjoyed the pain and joy of life until they grew old and died.
Keeping this in mind, even if you stubbornly put a clove of garlic in your mouth and drink cold water, you will live a long life.
Even if it is a life where you drink cold water and grind your teeth for the sake of that guy's reputation, you should live a long life and recite "Hymn of Seoul" over and over again.

--- p.102

No matter what anyone says, we must live with love.
As long as there is life left, it is to live and love.
It is a matter of living with love, forgiveness, and understanding each other.
It is a matter of living by forgiving someone as much as you love them.
It is a matter of living with generous forgiveness and passionate love.
To love someone is to always stay in the garden of spring, and a heart that has lost love and does not know how to love is destined to live forever buried in the desolate mountains and rivers of winter's iceberg.
It is a matter of living while loving and forgiving, loving and forgiving.

--- p.117

In a sense, Buddhism is a country with a horizon.
Because it is like an endless ocean, so deep, wide, and subtle that its height cannot be known.
I stand with both feet on the vast land of lawlessness, still wandering about where to go, but the more I think about it, the more fortunate, grateful, and happy I feel.
--- p.121

The woman seemed to look me up and down several times, then asked in a rather annoyingly thick tone, "Can you look at her palm?"
It was so absurd, but it was my fault that I was born with the face of a cheap market vendor.
So, I closed my eyes and answered that if he gave me a lot of money, I would not only read my palms but also read my face as a bonus.

--- p.148

My heart feels pounding as I hold the conductor's hand tightly.
I whispered into the old man’s ear, “You are a Buddha,” but he responded, “You fucking bastard.”
Ah! Ah! I pray for the recovery of the health of Venerable Chunsung, who illuminates our souls.
Even if we hear “Fuck you, you fucking bastard!” 10 or 20 times a day, I hope that He will recover his health and come closer to us again in his big form and let us hear the boundless sound of the law that he can see through his body.

Publisher's Review
What is so special about “Loving and Forgiving”?
It's only one,
This is the beautiful and heartbreaking sincerity of Monk Hyangbong!

“His burning eyes are good, his voice is good, and his non-attached, non-possessive footsteps are even better.
Perhaps Hyangbong will not stay in this world for long.
“Because he is a great ball of fire, weaving life like the wind.” - Monk Oh Hyeon, recommendation for the first edition of “Loving and Forgiving”

Monk Hyangbong, now in his mid-70s, still has a clear voice.
It is that confident and bold.
As seen in the recommendation from Monk Oh Hyeon, it is clear that he was a ‘big ball of fire’ in his youth.
Most of the writings in “Loving and Forgiving” were written in my late 20s.
It's so hot it feels like it's burning.
Nevertheless, it is so pitiful that you want to go closer, hold her hand, and hug her.

The writings of Monk Hyangbong are unadorned and unfiltered.
The sentences are not elegant, but they are captivating.
It's raw and heartbreaking.
But it doesn't hurt.
This is his self-portrait and our self-portrait.
It is a rite of passage and a desperate struggle that anyone who has experienced youth can relate to.
In it, you learn about life and acquire wisdom.
No matter how painful it may be, the past cannot help but be beautiful.

What makes this book special is the transparent sincerity of Venerable Hyangbong.
They come out in a so-called 'face-to-face' without hiding anything.
There is no trace of the performer's face or hypocrisy.
There is only a longing for freedom and enlightenment, and a heart of love and compassion for people.
In the last chapter of the book, 'Exploring the Salt Room,' the scenes where he visits the great monks of the time, Gyeongbong, Gusan, Goam, Seoong, Seongcheol, Wolsan, Wolha, Uhwa, Unheo, Chunseong, Tanheo, Hyanggok, Hyangbong, and Hye-am, and asks for their teachings as if crying out are also impressive.

Is a book from 45 years ago still relevant today? Like other classics, it could be if it offers entertainment, inspiration, and wisdom and a message that can positively transform and grow readers.
“Loving and Forgiving” fully satisfies these conditions.
Because there are many people who call this collection of essays ‘the book of life.’

Author's Note

In a previous life, there was a young man named Hyangbong.

His temper and tears always followed him like a shadow, and his other names were "Fire Sword" and "One-Way Traffic."
He seemed fierce but was sloppy, seemed determined but lived with a shaky mind like a loose molar.
In a way, he was a windmill and a buoy.
He was a traveler and a pilgrim.
He was a stubborn Hyangbong who had courage and spirit, but no compromise or consideration.

“Loving and Forgiving” is a distorted self-portrait of Hyangbong between the ages of twenty-six and thirty.
It's a pilgrim's notebook.
This is because I have lived a life of wandering and shaking, running errands at the Buddhist Newspaper, and being struck by thunder and lightning.

Now, as I look back on the memories of the past as a gray-haired beast, even the tears feel as beautiful as the heartbreaking pain.
