My other name is Middle Humanity
My other name, mid-humanity
Description
Book Introduction
A lovely and gift-like fantasy novel has arrived!
Shh! The mysterious bandage's powers are a secret between us.
“Have you ever heard of parallel universes?”

What makes a "best friend" for teenagers? It's having something in common.
In "My Another Name, Middle Human," the main character Marina and her classmates Lee Su-ah and Park Jimin have something in common: they are all "middle" in everything: they are of average height, average build, average appearance, average family circumstances, and even average grades.
The three friends share their daily routines in a group chat called 'Middle Humanity' and live ordinary lives going back and forth between home, school, and academy.
Then one day, on her way home, Marina discovers a mysterious shop lit by large pastel light bulbs.
Drawn in by a piece of paper with the words “I’ve been waiting for you” written on it at the door, the store’s display cases are filled with bandages of various colors.

As middle school student Marina is looking at bandages, the oak door inside opens and a green-haired boy appears.
Have you ever heard of parallel universes? You can send one child to school and let the other child play.
“If only I had this Band-Aid.” Marina is very surprised by those words.
“Is that possible? Can you really create multiple versions of me?” Before the two could even finish their conversation, another Marina entered the store… .
What choices will middle school girl Marina and adult Marina make?

Author Im Tae-ri draws readers into a parallel universe with her captivating characterization and fast-paced plot development until the very last page is turned.
Marina, a middle school student who met in a parallel universe, adult Marina, the kid at the band-aid store, Jin-ho, the son of his mother's friend, the Three Musketeers, the ramen shop lady, and Mr. Gyeonwoo from the Gyeonwoo star - all these lovable and charming characters come to life and move vividly, creating a delightful and fresh fantasy.
Another charm of this book is the free transformation of location and viewpoint.
Another highlight of this book is the beautiful illustrations by artist Seong, which make you feel as if you are with the main character in a fantastical space.
It's a truly wonderful novel that will have you rooting for the middle class, who make up eighty percent of the world.

Into the book
There were a variety of bandages, including bandages of various colors, bandages with macaron pictures, and bandages with clover pictures.
I tried to take it out to look at it, but the display case glass wouldn't open.
There was a key in front of the display case.
I thought they were displaying the bandages like they were some kind of treasure.
At that moment, the inner door across from me opened and a little boy came out.
Her short green hair and tanned face were like a well-polished, shiny cherry tomato.
“Hello? Please sit over here.”
The little boy pointed to a chair.
It was a chair with a backrest that looked much more comfortable than it looked from the outside.
“Oh, I was just passing by and stopped in.
“I was just about to leave.”
Actually, I had no money in my pocket.
I used it all up buying slushies.
As I walked to the entrance and was about to grab the door and push it out, a little boy spoke from behind me.
Have you ever heard of parallel universes? You can send one child to school and let the other child play.
“If only I had this band-aid.”
I turned around in surprise at the little boy's words.
The little boy was laughing.
“What did you just say? I was thinking about that earlier…
“Is that really possible?”
--- From "Marina"

“As we become adults, we often find ourselves moving our bodies differently from our minds.
“Like nodding your head even when you don’t like it, or shaking your head even when you like it.”
I looked at the woman in surprise.
I couldn't believe that this woman, who had no sense of humanity, was talking to me.
I hesitated about what to say.
No, actually it wasn't a question so I didn't know how to answer.
Then a little boy came up to us and held out both his hands.
I put my bag down near the tree trunk and grabbed the little girl's hand before the woman could grab it first.
The woman refused a few more times, then put down her bag and took the boy's hand.
The little girl's wet hands were soft.
The little boy led us to the sandy beach.
The wet white sand tickled the soles of my feet.
I got soaked in no time.
We held the little one's hand and spun around.
At that moment, music started playing from a speaker on the beach.
The woman began to laugh as if she had discovered something great.
"That's right, Marina! It takes courage to find happy moments."
--- From "Dancing in the Rain"

“What about Mr. Gyeonwu? What about the bandage?”
The little boy stretched out his finger and pointed to the Milky Way.
The stars that make up the Milky Way have become more densely packed.
As if making a magpie bridge.
When the boy asked the employee to zoom in, the screen showed a man crossing the Milky Way Bridge.
“It’s really beautiful!”
The stars were shining with their own brightness.
I asked the little boy.
“Do all the stars really have lives, like you said?”
“Of course.
The life of stars varies depending on the mass of the star.
“The more massive a star is, the shorter its lifespan, but it lives with high heat and light before dying in a huge explosion. Lower-mass stars live longer, but they live less hot and light than more massive stars, and die relatively quietly.”
“It’s amazing… In a word, is it short and thick or long and thin?
Which one is better?
“There is nothing better.
“Whether they shine brightly or not, they are all stars.”
“All stars…….”
“So, I need to focus on seeing my own star, not someone else’s.”
“To see my star?”
The little boy smiled at me.
That smile seemed to take me somewhere deep.
--- From "Band-Aid"

The woman spoke softly.
“Now that I’m an adult, I realize that becoming something isn’t that important.”
I asked in surprise.
"yes?"
The woman smiled.
That smile looked sad.
“Always think about what you really want to do.
That's important.
Looking into my heart, looking into my thoughts.
That's important, Marina."
I asked in surprise.
“You know my name.
"Did the kid tell you? You were surprised that she had the same name as your sister, right? I was surprised at first, too."
The woman turned her head and looked back at the store.
I took out a pad and pen from my bag.
The woman launched the app and drew a picture.
I sat closer to the woman.
“I like drawing too.
“Can I see it?”

Publisher's Review
An ordinary, yet special protagonist and friends!
Teenagers' worries and dreams, inferiority complex, and relationships with the opposite sex
Depicted in a cheerful, fresh, and touching way!

Readers of this book will find themselves chuckling at the various events and vivid dialogues experienced by the characters, and sometimes feel their hearts flutter as they empathize with the main character, rekindling dreams and passions they had given up on.

Also, seeing the protagonist Marina being swayed by the negative voice 'Medio', we come to understand the worries, emotions, and relationships that teenagers face, and we cheer for the protagonist Marina, who is so ordinary that she is special.
This is why I would recommend this book to teenagers who are prone to being swayed by negative voices that hurt themselves, as well as to parents and teachers who have a huge influence on their children's growth.

The greatest strength of this book is that it captures the harsh reality of teenagers being judged by their parents' abilities, grades, class ranks, and the characters' journey of discovering their own potential, trusting themselves, and growing within this reality.
Also, the characters' honesty in their actions and expressions of emotion are so pure that they are all lovable.
I want to give this book, like a magic band-aid, to young people who are worried about being too ordinary, so that they can create their own happiness 'following their heart'.

Through Marina, a fifteen-year-old living an ordinary life, we see the exciting journey of 'finding the life and dreams I want.'
It's fun until the moment you turn the last page.
Read and think.
If only we too had a magical bandage to heal our wounds and sorrows! Thank you for giving the world such a lovely piece of art.
_Recommended by Lee Hee-young, author of "Paint" and "Shaker"

Whose voice are you listening to now?
Don't be swayed by the negative 'medio' voices!
“Tell me what you want right now.”

Every time the protagonist Marina tries to make a new choice, the negative voice inside her head, 'Medio', pops up and nags her.
"Don't meddle in other people's business and just sit quietly." "Are you in your right mind? Stop acting out of the box."
“That’s not safe.” “Your level is widespread.
“Don’t be distracted and study hard to become a member of the higher race.” Medio’s voice can be heard reprimanding anyone who tries to deviate even slightly from the established framework.

Marina, a middle school girl who was always swayed by Medio's voice, gradually begins to listen to her inner voice through encounters with the kid at the bandage store, the adult Marina, her boyfriend Jin-ho, and the customers who visit the store.
The girl who was afraid to break out of the mold now ignores Medio's voice and says to the adult Marina, "I can do it too!"
“Sister, it’s even funnier that you’ve never been lost.
There's a saying that goes, "I always take the road I know."
I met another older sister.
My sister can do it well enough.
So don't worry and get lost as much as you want."

"My Other Name, Mid-Human" is a wonderful young adult fantasy novel that teaches us how to happily get lost rather than follow the path others tell us.
This book is worth recommending because it was first read, agreed with, and recommended by a youth dictionary review group comprised of middle school students.

Adults seem to have a tendency to prejudge life and mold children into a mold based on their own experiences.
But now that I'm an adult, I understand.
In fact, even adults don't know the answers to life.
I hope you don't just blindly let your school days pass you by, believing only the uncertain words of adults.
I hope Marina, who makes up eighty percent of the world, can live her own life without being swayed by Medio's words.
