The best sermon
Description
Book Introduction
The purpose of the sermon goes beyond ‘transformation of the saints’
The best sermon is when it becomes 'the glory of God'.
Understand the preacher's position better than anyone else
The kindness that helps ease sermon worries and guides the way stands out!
Highly recommended by domestic and international preachers and homiletics professors David Allen, Michael Duduit, Stephen Smith, Calvin Pearson, Kim Nam-joon, Kim Dae-hyeok, Kim Byeong-sam, Kim Seung-wook, Kim Hak-yu, Ryu Eung-ryeol, Oh Jeong-hyeon, Oh Hyun-cheol, Yoo Jin-so, Lee Dong-won, Lee Seung-jin, Lee Chan-soo, Jeong Chang-gyun, and Pi Yeong-min!
The best sermons are thoroughly grounded in the text and are delivered as a story to the audience.
The sermon connects the words given to the people there at that time with the stories of the people here now, and changes these people.
For the preacher, it is a fierce battle and a deep anguish that keeps him awake.
A sermon that is irrelevant to the audience becomes a sermon that is just grasping at clouds, a sermon that is irrelevant to the text becomes nothing more than the preacher's personal thoughts, a sermon without application becomes a sermon without purpose, and a sermon that is not properly delivered becomes a sermon without fruit.
This book is an excellent guide for preachers who must stand between the text and the audience, stepping into the text and moving toward the audience, to deliver the best sermons.

Into the book
"If I bring about change, is my preaching a success? If not, is it useless?" If we think of change as the standard, then the prophets who preached to the rebellious Israelites who remained unchanged no matter how much they preached, and the apostles who constantly preached to those who closed their ears, thinking the gospel was foolish, are failures.
But our God never thinks that way.
You still see them as your precious people.
It's okay if there are no visible changes right away.
Just preach with all your heart for the glory of God.
God will take care of the rest.
… Homiletician Tony Merida says that the glory of God is what a preacher should passionately pursue throughout his life.
That is absolutely correct.
…it clearly proclaims that God is alive even now and is leading the great history of redemption.
At the same time, it vividly shows that God raises up souls as weak and broken as reeds to expand His kingdom.
--- From the "Prologue"
Preaching is a channel of grace that leads lost souls to the Lord, allowing them to obtain 'new life' (salvation/eternal life) and experience 'abundant life' (maturity/growth).
…So what makes a good sermon? The best sermon is one that connects the biblical text with today's audience in a solid yet natural way.
We must find the meaning of the Bible within the historical context in which it was first written, and convey the original meaning God intended through the biblical authors so that it can be heard by today's audience.
…What about Korean preaching from this perspective? Generally, evangelical and conservative denominations emphasize and study the revelation of the biblical text, but they actually lack a strong awareness of the importance of the audience.
Above all, you must know the audience's mind.
You have to delve into the lives of your audience.
Now, Korean sermons must also strive to maintain a balance between the text and the audience.
--- 「Chapter 4.
From “Audience Analysis”
So how can the Scriptures of the past still hold true today? There are two foundations for a close connection between the time period of the text being preached and the present.
The first foundation is ‘humans living with the problem of sin.’
People who lived in biblical times and people living today all face the same problem of sin.
The second foundation is ‘God who saves and gives grace’ to humans who have fallen into sin.
After the fall of Adam, God did not leave humans to die as a result of sin.
He planned salvation, saved us through the cross of Jesus Christ, and continued the path of salvation and grace for all generations through the work of the Holy Spirit.
For these two reasons, the text and our times can never be separated.
--- 「Chapter 5.
From “The Secret of Related Work”
When I meet and talk with preachers in the field at preaching clinics, I often find that they view the use of parables as a compromise with the world.
These are preachers who mainly emphasize pure faith, and I respect that faith and spirit.
However, a sermon must be delivered in a way that resonates with the audience and is attractive, just as it must convey the pure word of God.
There is nothing wrong with using illustrations in sermons.
You just have to use it well.
Since a parable is essentially a story, it should create a picture in the audience's mind so that the text can be easily understood.
So what are some relatable and compelling sermon illustrations, and how can we use them?
--- 「Chapter 6.
From “How to Use the Example of Opening a Message”
The best sermons pursue God-centered preaching.
The text clearly shows the audience how the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit perform the amazing work of redemption.
Unfortunately, however, there are preachers who insist on a biased 'Christ-centered preaching' over this kind of biblical, balanced, God-centered preaching.
As we will see shortly, Christ-centered preaching is not only unbiblical but also raises several problems from a homiletical perspective.
If you want the best sermons, pursue God-centered preaching, not Christ-centered preaching.
…The above sermon reveals the message that although humans always betray, God never betrays.
After that, he suggests an application point that we should pray for God to bestow grace on us because He is such a God.
Do not unconditionally connect the text to Christ, but preach the God revealed in the text you have chosen.
Let the audience know what kind of God that is.
The clarity with which God's image is revealed determines the quality of the best sermon.
