The foundation of present-day life, a journey of exploration into modern times

The meaning of ‘modernity’ in our history is very significant.
This is because the modern era, which was only about a hundred years ago, is very closely related to our lives today.
Many things that have a major impact on our lives, including political systems, culture, economy, and art, began in the modern era.
It was a time of extreme political turmoil due to foreign invasion, but it was also a turbulent time in which survival was only possible by breaking away from all existing common sense and concepts amidst a changed worldview and expanded foreign relations.
The lives of those who had to live through that change must have been extremely difficult and confusing.
For the people of that time, who had to stand at a crossroads, wasn't it a series of uncertain challenges with no end in sight?

In any case, people at that time endured each day with their own purpose and reason, living bravely in the midst of a shocking change that completely shook up the lives they had enjoyed.
In order to properly understand the major and minor events that occurred in Joseon, which was shaken by foreign invasion, it is very important to look into the thoughts and lives of the people of that time.
I believe that it will not only help us reflect on the foundation of life as we live today, but also provide us with deep stimulation and insight.
Now, let's embark on a journey of exploration into the modern era with "Exploring the Modern Lifestyles of Joseon People"!

People who have seen the world outside Joseon

The fates of the first envoys in our country's history to be dispatched to a Western country were as varied as their different paths to return home.
Min Young-ik, overwhelmed by the dazzling development of the United States, turned to a more conservative attitude.
I was afraid that if Joseon continued to change, it could become a country without a king or nobility like the United States.
On the other hand, Hong Yeong-sik and Seo Gwang-beom, who believed that Joseon needed to change as soon as possible, launched the Gapsin Coup along with Kim Ok-gyun and Park Yeong-hyo just a few months after returning to Korea.
The Gapsin Coup can be said to be a conflict that occurred between people who had different opinions on the direction and pace of Joseon's reform.

Joseon opens and the table becomes abundant.

During the port opening period, wheat flour was scarce, so Jjajangmyeon was not as popular as it is now.
So, it is said that relatively cheap hotteok was more popular.
The 'ho' in hotteok means 'barbarian' and refers to the northern people.
This character was added to the names of items that came from China or further north or Central Asia.
Examples include words like walnut, pocket, and hotteok.
Hotteok is also a food that was made and sold by Chinese people during the port opening period.

Modern Education: A Light that Opens a New Life
After the opening of the country, foreign missionaries established many schools in our country.
Among them is Baejae School, the first school established by a foreigner.
Because Baejae School was founded by missionaries, English and Bible study were mandatory.
I also taught geography, math, social studies, and science.
They say they enjoyed playing a variety of sports during physical education class.
It's not much different from schools these days, is it? The bell rings at the beginning and end of class, there's a break in the middle, and Sundays are all similar.

People who pioneered modern medicine

On December 4, 1884, a banquet was held to celebrate the opening of the Post Office, the first postal service organization in our country.
But then suddenly a fire broke out and people started running around in panic.
The radical reformists staged the Gapsin Coup.
At this time, the queen's nephew, Min Yeong-ik, was stabbed several times with a sword.
It was the American ambassador Foote and his diplomatic advisor, Möllendorff, who saved him from dying from a fatal wound.
They first moved Min Yeong-ik to the nearby house in Möllendorff and then called in the American medical missionary Allen.
When Allen arrived, doctors were treating Min Yeong-ik.
I was just about to apply a type of herbal medicine, a plaster, to the bleeding area.

Publisher's Review
Stories from Joseon's Port Opening Period, written by current history teachers.

Shinmiyangyo, Byeonginyangyo, Ganghwa Island Treaty, Japan-Korea Annexation… … .
Joseon's modern history is stained with shameful and humiliating history.
Behind the royal family, who had lost their ability to make decisions and were extremely incompetent, and the court officials, who were busy pursuing their own interests rather than devoting their efforts to strengthening the country and caring for the people, there were people who were struggling to save the country from crisis.

《Exploring the Modern Life of Joseon People》 examines in detail the political issues that underpinned the modern era, while also focusing on various events that brought about major changes in the lives and livelihoods of the people of that era, such as the military, healthcare, and education.
In addition, by covering all aspects of life, including food and entertainment, it helps readers understand modern times in a more in-depth and three-dimensional way.
It is not only fun to read but also fun to look at, with its interesting episodes and rich illustrations.

The culture shock faced by people during the port opening period

As the Enlightenment began, Western civilization, which came in like a flood, completely changed the lives and perspectives of the Joseon people.
While some politicians were putting the country in danger by signing unequal treaties (〈Treaties, the Gateway to a Wider World〉), Joseon soldiers, who had been fighting helplessly with outdated weapons, were falling one by one before modern weapons (〈Modern Army: What Did It Protect?〉).

Some received modern education and became doctors or nurses, saving many lives (〈Modern Education, the Light that Opens a New Life〉, 〈People Who Pioneered Modern Medicine〉), while others moved forward into a bigger world with hope (〈Immigration of Koreans with Hope〉).

However, not everyone was willing to sacrifice their lives for their country or devote themselves to cherishing great ambitions.
They also found enjoyment in entertainment such as baseball and soccer, and spectacles such as action pictures (〈Finding Enjoyment in New Entertainment and Sights〉), and they also learned about the political situation both at home and abroad through the newly introduced newspapers (〈Newspapers, Paper Containing the Times〉).

In this way, modernity takes on countless different forms.
Although it was a painful and difficult time in a precarious situation like a lighthouse in the wind, it was also a time when I felt a sense of wonder and curiosity as I embraced new civilizations and embraced a world view much broader than before.
Thus, some people have emerged who are actively pioneering their own lives.

It seems that looking back on and sharing the lives of people in that era, which could be called a 'culture shock', would be very meaningful in many ways.
The experience of walking through that era and feeling the breath of those who lived in the modern era will be the starting point for realizing who I am today.
