“We set off to a world where schools have disappeared.”

“Oh, I don’t want to go to school today!” A half-asleep teenager, fed up with it but unable to escape, prepares to go to school, crying and eating mustard.
A novel with an amazing worldview that will dazzle their eyes has been published.
Author Beom Yu-jin, who has depicted the diverse expressions of 'today's youth' across various genres, has created a new work, 'Shifting', a youth science fiction novel that boldly realizes the bold imagination of a 'world where school has disappeared', something that every student has dreamed of at least once.
The thrilling story of a boy and girl who decide to make different choices to escape their painful reality unfolds.
This work will not only provide a sense of liberation to teenagers who find school stifling, but will also make us reflect on the meaning and function of 'school' that we have traditionally thought of.
It was selected for the Korea Arts & Culture Education Service's Literature Creation Fund publication support project.

Into the book
“I told you.
That you can go to a parallel world.
They call it shifting.
Let's give it a try! This is an empty building, so no one else will be using the elevator, right?
“Aren’t you interested in parallel worlds?”
Loa paused.
The parallel world that Doyul described matched the imagination I had since I was young.
I was a little curious, but I couldn't join in on Doyul's prank because my friends would be waiting.
Loa tried to look disinterested and urged Doyul on again.
“I don’t care.
“Quickly press the first floor button.”
The elevator stopped at every floor and arrived at the 10th floor.
Doyul pressed the 5th floor again.
“If DR’s presence is present when you get on the elevator on the 5th floor, you’re 70 percent successful.”
“DR? What is that?”
“Desire Reality.
That's what we call the world we go to through shifting.
When you actually go there, it seems like people just call it this world, the original world.
“It’s a hassle.”
The elevator quickly descended to the fifth floor.
Meanwhile, the number of new message notifications in the group chat room continued to increase.
Roa clicked on the group chat, but because she was in the elevator and the data wasn't flowing properly, not a single word appeared.
I just kept scrolling back and forth in an empty window.

“To sum it up in one word, Dima is exactly that.
“A new kind of aristocracy.”
--- P.41

In this world, education is class.
It is a legitimate hereditary tool of wealth that only the upper class at the top of the pyramid can enjoy.
And the rate is Dimaira, that is, Dimada.
The rate of this world is the main character.
Already a winner.
Doyul opened his mouth wide and laughed like a madman.
I was afraid that my mom would look in if I laughed loudly, so I held my breath and sobbed.
I was laughing and then I read out loud an old article that came up on the monitor.
“There is no more school.”
The school disappeared.
The school that used to torment me is no more.
Doyul couldn't stop laughing.

'If you open this... ... .'
Will something change? Will nothing change? My grip on the doorknob tightened.
'It's already changed.
You've already come to another world.
So there's nothing more to be disappointed about.'
Loa made up her mind and opened the closet door in one breath.
A school of fish poured out from the wide open door.
Large, colorful and varied fish.
The fish swam freely in the air.
Loa watched the dance as if she was entranced, and then noticed a silver fish swimming slowly out of the closet.
It was a movement that seemed to stagger somewhere.
The silver fish that approached Loa had small holes in its gills.
“You hurt your gills, you.
Then it will be difficult to be with friends.”
It's just like me.
Loa muttered, looking down at the silver fish.

“Hey, what’s wrong with you? Yul, come to your senses!”
“Shut up! I can’t forgive you.”
Doyul's arm trembled as he was caught by Joohyuk.
Doyul bit his lower lip hard and tensed his body.
A look of confusion was evident on Joohyuk's face.
“Me? Why?”
“You don’t know what you did to me.”
"What did I do? Yul-ah! Park Do-yul, we're friends."
Joohyuk's complaint did not reach Doyul.
Long-suppressed anger burst out from within Doyul.
The veins on the back of my hand stood out.
“You in this world have to pay.”
--- P.200

'There's no guarantee that this rope will be installed all the way to the top.
There's also a door so it might be locked.
But I can't do nothing.'
Roa put on her seatbelt and grabbed the rope.
'We will make D-Day a success.
I'm going to make it a success.'
Loa tightened the loops on her belt, stepped onto the step, and climbed the wall.
One step up, one step up.
Loa moved upwards as nimbly as a squirrel.
But Loa's relentless climb was halted for a moment.
I could tell by my body's reaction.
It's 14 meters.
Loa raised her head and looked up.
There wasn't much left to the upper window where the rope was hanging.
It's a curse.
The curse of 1 meter.
It was as if my feet were stuck to the footrest and I couldn't get off.
My back is stiff.
My hands felt weak as if I was about to lose the rope at any moment.
My breathing became labored.
'in action.
'We have to move.'
Useless stuff.
You are useless.
It seemed like my father's voice was coming from somewhere.
Loa closed her eyes tightly.
And then he exhaled deeply.
'Let's breathe, breathe.
Think about it.
Days here.'

Publisher's Review
Heading to a world where schools have disappeared
Would you like to take the elevator?
When the door opens, the world of your imagination unfolds!

There is nothing new about school life, which rolls like a hamster wheel according to a schedule.
Still, a subtle tension that I can never get used to lingers in the classroom.
The rankings given, the gap between dreams and reality, the implicit hierarchy among friends…
If the stifling school were to disappear, would we truly find happiness? "Shifting" is set in a parallel world without school, and depicts the struggles of Roa and Doyul, who, unprotected and with nowhere to turn, desperately need happiness more than anyone else.
The exciting story of two children who decide to show their different courage for 'change' and 'revenge' unfolds.
'Shifting', meaning moving to another world, is a popular keyword in the actual youth community where methods and reviews are shared, and the title itself is a novel that will arouse the curiosity of teenage readers.

Roa, who always has a smiling face at school, is actually a victim of domestic violence.
Like a climber, he tenaciously perseveres and waits for the day of independence to come.
I nod my head and pretend to agree with my friends who are building a sense of camaraderie based on the principle that "no student likes school," but I can't help but feel a deepening sense of bitterness and loneliness in a corner of my heart that considers school a sanctuary.

Meanwhile, half-humans like Roa have a hard time enduring their time at school.
The only way to escape from the bullies is to escape to an online community.
I try to follow the 'spell to summon a servant horse' posted on the bulletin board, but the more I do it, the more ridiculing comments I get, and I can't feel attached to school or home.
Do-yul confesses to his homeroom teacher, whom he had relied on, for the first time about being a victim of school violence, but when he sees her not taking it seriously, he becomes so angry that he ends up committing an irreversible accident...

Roa and Doyul want to escape from reality and go to another world.
Two children who meet in a shopping mall elevator end up in a parallel world due to 'elevator shifting', which could be considered an urban legend.
A world where the school that was a refuge for Roa and a hell for Doyul has disappeared! In this strange and new world, Roa and Doyul stand at a crossroads, faced with the choice of finding true happiness.
Will we remain in a world without school, or will we go back to the way things were before?

Author Beom Yu-jin has portrayed healthy youth who are in danger but do not give up hope, such as in “Our Own Convenience Store Recipe,” which comforts the pain of teenagers who are outside the system, and “My Friend is Dead,” which tells the story of children who show courage for a friend who has been a victim of school violence.
This new work also affirms life and emphasizes that those who strive for tomorrow rather than dwell on yesterday can be happier.
"Shifting," which reveals the pain of youth through the fictional concept of shifting, will captivate readers as a science fiction novel that paradoxically portrays reality in the most stark way, while also making them dream of an extremely hopeful tomorrow.

If there were another me living in another world
Is that child living happily?

Everyone spends their days enduring their own worries and sorrows.
Life is hard because we can't show all our pain and we can't be completely comforted.
Still, we gain strength to prepare for tomorrow from those who love and support us.
The reason why Roa and Doyul's days were particularly difficult was because they had been denied their true selves by their family and friends, the people they most wanted to rely on.
Society, institutions, adults, and nothing else will stand by these two children who have become so weak that they cannot be helped.
This harsh reality is further amplified in a post-shifting world where schools have disappeared.
In a society where public education is collapsing and everything boils down to capital, the safety and dignity of young people are no longer guaranteed.

School wasn't where I wanted to stay.
Being with people you love,
I loved the space I could be in with them!
_Loa who chose change

You don't know what you did to me.
I can't forgive you.
You in this world have to pay!
_The rate at which revenge is chosen

The path of two children who decided on completely different choices makes us reflect on not only the meaning of 'school' but also the meaning of 'life'.
Unlike Doyul, who chose the same revenge as those who tormented him in the past, Roa chooses to shout, run, and move forward on her own toward happiness.
In fact, since most people, like Doyul, have a hard time breaking away from their yesterdays, Loa's decision to change herself shines even more.
With this dazzling choice, Loa recognizes the friends who will love her, and dedicates herself to becoming a friend who can give them true love and friendship.

The story ends with Roa and Doyul boarding the elevator again and departing for a new world.
It reminds me of the future of teenagers, where no outcome is yet known.
However, what is clear is that only those who are filled with a firm will to become happy, rather than waiting to be happy, will inevitably welcome a happy tomorrow, no matter where in the world it may be.
"Shifting" is a coming-of-age novel that offers encouragement and motivation to young people heading into this unknown tomorrow.
