This book is a novel that tells the story of independence activist Dosan Ahn Chang-ho, his daughter Susan Ahn, the first female gunnery officer in the U.S. Navy who also served in World War II, and their family.

This novel began with a single line of newspaper article.
"Dosan Ahn Chang-ho's daughter, Susan Ahn, served as the first female gunnery officer in the U.S. Navy!" I've seen many books and quotes about Ahn Chang-ho, but this was my first time hearing about Susan Ahn.

Into the book
Now, I too will live as the daughter of an independence fighter.
Like a willow tree that bends but does not break.
Like a lotus flower that blooms beautifully even in the midst of filth.
Remembering my father's words.
Also, I think I finally understand what my father meant when he wrote 'Smile always' in every letter.
--- p.90

I miss you, proud father! I heard you're very unwell. Mom is always worried.
sorry.
Forgive the daughter who understood her father too late.
--- p.98

I don't know what's right! For those who fight for independence, even seeing the family they long to see is shameful and a sin...
I don't understand.
--- p.139

I want to become a soldier and fight the Japanese army in place of my father.
I will take over the independence movement that my father was unable to complete in his lifetime.
--- p.154

Father, who watches over us from heaven! Father, the war is finally over.
As my father had prophesied, the Emperor signed the surrender document.
I believe my father will be happy in heaven too.
--- p.180

Publisher's Review
A moving story woven like warp and weft, based on history and true events!
History encountered in the lives of Dosan Ahn Chang-ho, his daughter Ahn Susan, and their family!

As is widely known, Ahn Chang-ho participated in the independence movement while traveling between the United States, Korea, and China.
A few years ago, a TV entertainment program visited Los Angeles, USA, where Dosan Ahn Chang-ho and his family lived.
His activities and life are already well known through various media, including books, to the point that they have been covered on TV programs.
Also, Ahn Chang-ho's family's life in the United States is well known.

While basing his work on historical facts and true stories, the author delves deeper and longer into the lives of Ahn Chang-ho and his family through the many remaining stories.
In this completed book, the author portrays the life of Ahn Chang-ho and his family as independence activists, with Ahn Su-san, Ahn Chang-ho's daughter and an American soldier, as the main character.
In it, Ahn Chang-ho is an independence activist and also the head of a household, and his family, including Ahn Susan, also pursue their own dreams while living a difficult life supporting an independence activist, or miss Ahn Chang-ho as a father or husband.

In particular, the author quotes letters exchanged between Ahn Chang-ho and his family throughout the text, shows scenes of him hanging a swing for his children on a willow tree planted in the yard, or of him being moved by ordinary moments during a meal with his family. He also describes the unfamiliar American neighborhood where he lived and the people around him, including the Heungsadan, in a three-dimensional manner, turning content that could easily be seen as stiff like a history book into a moving and narrative story.
Meanwhile, the title of this book, 'Always Smile', was a phrase that Ahn Chang-ho often used in his letters, and was an expression of his will not to lose hope and dream of independence.
So, this message will be more touching to readers.
Finally, in the story of the independence activist and his family, creatively woven by the author like warp and weft based on history, readers can encounter the vivid and moving images of people hidden behind history in a deeper and broader way.

When Mr. Ahn Chang-ho met his students or comrades in the independence movement, or when writing letters to his children, he always emphasized the phrase, “Smile always.”
I guess it means to never lose your smile no matter what adversity you face.
Isn't now the time for the "always smile" spirit? - From the Author's Note
