Professor Kim Hyung-seok's Belief in Jesus
Description
Book Introduction
Faith is The person and life of Jesus Christ Accept it as mine It is a matter of joining in his mission. Professor Kim Hyung-seok, who confesses that “faith made me grow rather than growing on my own,” turned 103 this year. He met the Lord personally at the age of 14 through God's grace and has been growing in his faith in Jesus Christ ever since. For him, faith was based on experience rather than theory due to an illness he suffered from as a child, and after that, through extensive reading and research, he established a theory of Christian faith. Therefore, this book can be said to be a confession and wisdom of faith experienced and realized in the course of one person's faith. He once wanted to become a pastor, but God did not allow him to go that route, and instead used him to practice the teachings of Jesus Christ more objectively and broadly outside the walls of the church. Therefore, this book is not a book that non-believers will find objectionable, and it is filled with content that will help anyone who sincerely wants to know the teachings of Jesus Christ to come to know true faith. Professor Kim says, “Faith is a lifelong mission.” Because faith must accompany life until death. Because it must be revealed in life, and that life must be based on love. Through this book, you will once again realize that believing in Jesus is not just a simple confession of faith with your lips, but a weighty and serious undertaking that carries with it the responsibility of love for society, and that it is an event of unspeakable grace. |

Into the book
If intellectuals seeking eternity and salvation cannot satisfy their desires in science or philosophy, and cannot attain their perfection in art or morality, shouldn't they, with sincerity and piety, knock on the door of religion?
And those who knock on the door of faith with their whole being and life values on the line usually find and enjoy religious faith.
--- p.5
Faith is a personal experience.
Those who have had a religious experience later organize the content of that experience theoretically, and those who choose theology first later come to have complete faith by putting it into practice.
I first experienced it and then gradually went through the process of establishing the content of that experience theoretically.
--- p.21
While studying philosophy at university, I wanted to focus on rational tasks and intellectual reflection, as much as possible, without being bound by Christian preconceptions.
So I started reading more atheist and anti-Christian books.
However, I often had a strong intuition that their theories and arguments were quite weak and unreasonable.
I realized that reading Schopenhauer and Nietzsche had made me fall deeper into my Christian faith.
Compared to Kierkegaard or Dostoevsky, I found their philosophy and ideas to be much more superficial.
--- p.24
Naturally, the words of Christ can be elevated beyond doctrine to become universal truths for all mankind.
Of course, sermons and theology are important.
But the word of Christ must be communicated and understood by those who seek the truth in any way other than that.
Christianity has two aspects.
One is the ecclesiastical aspect and the other is the human aspect.
While the ecclesiastical aspect was presented by pastors and theologians, the human aspect was appropriately illuminated by existentialists including Augustine, Pascal, Kierkegaard, and Dostoevsky.
In any case, we must strive to ensure that the words of Christ do not remain mere church doctrine but become the truth for humanity.
--- p.29
Preaching and teaching are the work of pastors.
The work assigned to someone like me was a supporting role, but thankfully, I have been able to handle it for about 80 years out of the 100 years that have passed.
And opportunities to spread the truth of life without using the name of Christianity to people in businesses and social organizations that are not affiliated with the church are also increasing.
--- p.31
Jesus taught us to live like children, and Paul confessed that although our flesh grows old, our inner self is being renewed day by day.
A believer always becomes a child before Jesus.
As we grow older, it seems that the essence of faith is to pray, “I am such a foolish and childish child,” and not to be able to think of ourselves as old for the sake of the work of Christ.
Because I must accomplish the work the Lord has entrusted to me and always do my best to help with that work.
--- p.35
Our faith is the same.
Unless we can throw ourselves into the arms of God's love and experience new life in it, we cannot attain true faith.
--- p.43
Service is not a task given only to great people.
If our daily work and the responsibilities entrusted to us are carried out with human purpose and filled with a spirit of service to our neighbors and society, we will reach the most valuable and greatest life.
That is the third dimension of life.
If you ask what the purpose of life is, you cannot get any other answer than that the ultimate purpose is to serve humanity.
--- p.51
What is the love we always emphasize?
Aren't we sacrificing ourselves for good and beautiful human relationships?
It would be a great contradiction to emphasize only the practice of love while leaving aside the restoration of human relationships.
Religious people should be examples of this and strive to make society as a whole like it.
--- p.55
If you give up eternity and rest, there is no need for faith or religion.
But those who carry the burden of hardship, who long for the eternity and rest that learning, art, and morality cannot bring, must cross that river.
Because there is eternity on the other side of the river, and there is a God who promised eternity.
Therefore, the more precious conscience and morality are, the deeper their limitations are felt, and the clearer they are, the heavier the burden they impose.
That is the lesson Confucius taught.
Christianity offers a faith that can both perfect conscience and morality and transcend them.
That is the way to obtain the rest that comes from eternity.
Paul's cry, "What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?" (Romans 7:24) shows that humans are beings who ultimately must long for salvation.
--- p.58
But miracles do not only refer to these healings.
Aren't countless people experiencing rebirth and receiving the promise of hope and a future in life through Christ?
It is a miracle many times more valuable than healing a disease.
Yet we don't think much of it.
To that extent, humans have become secularized and slaves to physical selfishness.
And those who knock on the door of faith with their whole being and life values on the line usually find and enjoy religious faith.
