Into the book
“A ridge is a huge mountain range deep in the ocean.
This is where the mantle beneath the Earth rises to create new oceanic plates.
The newly formed oceanic plate moves to either side along the convection currents of the mantle, creating a deep valley called a 'V-shaped rift' in the middle of the mid-ocean ridge.”
“So where does the oceanic plate go?”
“The oceanic plate is heavier than the continental plate we are on, so when it meets the continental plate, it digs down.
The area where two plates meet is called a trench.
The oceanic plate that has sunk downward is subjected to temperature and pressure, melting and returning to the mantle, a fluid, solid state.
During this process, earthquakes occur frequently due to friction with the continental plates, and volcanic activity also occurs frequently.”

The children, having grasped the situation, put their heads together to think of a solution.
After a while, Jisoo snapped her fingers.
"Oh! Kids, how about we scratch it with a pencil on a piece of paper? I think the marks will be a little clearer then."
“Ah, that! The frottage technique!”
The children, clutching at straws, gently scratched paper with a pencil on the metal plate under the tank.
After some trial and error, Geumseul succeeded in making a rubbing that could recognize 4 or 5 numbers.

Listening to Professor Gong Wi-seong's explanation, In-ja was able to organize his thoughts on the nature of competition.
The fear of defeat becomes the driving force behind our efforts.
They say that a lion does its best to catch a rabbit, but that's because even a lion can miss a rabbit.
Even a lion wouldn't give it its all if it were an easy prey that it could 100% catch.
Conversely, even in situations where defeat is certain, the will to try disappears.
In order to put in the most effort, it has to be a close game where the outcome is unpredictable.
The power that exceeds 100% of one's ability is demonstrated in such close matches.

“Let’s talk about Earth today.”
Mr. Gong Wi-seong opened the door and came in and said.
Every time this happened, Lina wondered how the topic for that day's class was decided.
“As everyone knows, the circumference of the Earth is 40,000 km, and the radius of the Earth is about 6,400 km.”
'I didn't know?'
Lina looked at Jisoo without realizing it.
At that moment, Jisoo also looked at Lina.
The two realized they were thinking the same thing and laughed silently.

“Do you have an inferiority complex toward me?”
Inja's heart began to race as he saw Nagi's gaze looking straight at him.
The sound of gears meshing and turning that had stopped in my childhood rang clearly in my ears.
The man hid his excited expression with an exaggerated smile.
“Hahaha! Me? To you? Wow- Even delusions are a disease at this point.”
When the man laughed, the children who were watching the situation also laughed.
Nagi, without paying attention, tilted his head to the other side again and stared intently at the man's face.
Nagi, who had been standing like that for a while, spoke to Inja with a blank expression on his face.
“Math Achievement Contest.
“Lee In-ja, 2nd grade, Woosoo Elementary School.”
A chill ran down the back of the man's neck.
Nagi's current appearance seemed to be the exact embodiment of the image that Inja had in his mind.
The smile disappeared from the man's face.
His eyes were filled with a thrill, and there was even a hint of awe in them.

“Nagi, are you okay?”
"huh.
are you okay.
“I just realized that no one will ever like me.”
Geumseul had often had similar thoughts, but Nagi's tone conveyed a deep, indescribable sadness.
If Geumseul's words were self-deprecating, Nagi's tone was closer to self-abandonment.
“Why, why are you saying that?
“You have so many strengths.”
At Geumseul's words, Nagi gave a hollow smile.
In the process of searching for memories with Inza, Nagi even recalled what his mother had said to him on the day of the math competition.
'I wish I were a kid like you.'
The mother wanted a child like him.
My mother was always full of worries and concerns.
If he had been a kind child, his mother would have been happier and his father would not have left the family.
'My parents never wanted a child like me, so who would like me?'
Nagi swallowed the words that were rising to his throat.
A gut feeling gripped his whole body, telling him that if he said those words, he would fall into an irreversible trap.
But those words were too sharp and cold to keep in my heart.

Publisher's Review

“Let’s have another match with me.
“I’ll let you know if I win.”
A breathtaking battle of wits between Inja and Nagi surrounding the second secret!

Inja, who was always labeled a "genius" or "gifted" as the top student admitted to a science-specialized middle school, has a rival that others don't know about.
It's 'Nagi'.
After losing to Nagi in the elementary school national math competition, Inza dreams of a rematch with him, but Nagi's interest is always focused on something other than studying.
Meanwhile, Nagi and his friends solve the school's first secret and receive a big prize.
The character realizes that Nagi's interest is in solving the school's secrets and decides to jump into solving the second secret under the nickname 'Joker'.
After a short summer vacation, the second semester begins, and 10 lockers with strange problems appear before the children...

In Volume 1, Nagi and her ballet club friends took the lead in solving the school's secrets, while in Volume 2, Inza and the members of the Olympiad Preparation Club appear as rivals, creating a confrontational structure.
The story of Seo-jeon, a member of the Olympiad preparation club who dreamed of becoming a dinosaur scientist but couldn't resist his parents' encouragement and instead set his goal as entering a prestigious university, and Bu-man, who became obsessed with studying to regain his genius title, as they unravel the secrets provides much food for thought for teenagers who are contemplating their future paths.
The first secret is revealed, and the close-knit relationship between Nagi and his friends also changes.
The dreams, love, and friendship surrounding Nagi, who finally begins to look after the people around her, Lina, who works harder to achieve her dream, Geumseul, who decides not to hide herself, Jisoo, who grows in her own way while watching her friends, and Geo, who steadily develops her interests, grow high and wide like the autumn sky in the second semester.
The stories interspersed between the battles between these two geniuses with extraordinary minds pose a profound question to us, beyond the knowledge of science: "How should we live?"

Both ‘science idiots’ and ‘science experts’, come here!
The new world of 'virtue and merit' revealed by Dr. Ver

Now is the era of 'science and engineering'.
It has been a long time since students started saying that choosing calculus or science would be advantageous for college entrance.
Over the past nine years, about 230 humanities and social science departments at four-year universities have disappeared, while about 110 science and engineering departments have increased.
The fact that 70-80% of successful applicants to large corporations are from science and engineering fields has led to an increase in students who, despite being liberal arts students at heart, are reluctantly choosing to pursue science.
Of course, there is nothing wrong with taking the safe route.
Because choice is a personal freedom.
But if you're going to eat mustard anyway, wouldn't it be better to savor it rather than cry? The "Science Specialized Middle School" series was created with this very idea in mind.
Since we're going to eat, let's eat deliciously!

The author, Dr. Ver, who holds a PhD in engineering and works as a webtoon artist and novelist, possesses both a scientific and liberal arts sensibility and fully demonstrates his talents in Volume 2.
In Volume 1, the characters mainly used physics knowledge such as 'absorption spectrum', 'birth and death of stars', and 'periodic table' to find answers to the problems, while in Volume 2, they mainly use earth science knowledge such as 'structure of the Earth', 'cycle of matter', and 'evolution of life' to find answers.
The way in which the well-received descriptions of human relationships and psychology in Volume 1 are explained by comparing them to scientific theories, such as expressing competition as 'freon' and 'redox reaction' or comparing love to 'the double slit experiment of electrons', has become even more profound.
The corners in the text that provided a lot of fun have also been upgraded.
If Volume 1 contained 'TMI by Professor Gong Wi-seong' that supplemented scientific theories, Volume 2 features Nagi's practice book and Professor Gong Wi-seong's blackboard.
It is tightly woven with an easy-to-understand structure, a tight detective process, and unique characters, showing what a science novel is that can be enjoyed by both science-savvy and science-illiterate readers.
Want to experience the new world of "deokgongilchi (virtue and study are aligned)"? We recommend enrolling in a science-specialized middle school.
