Book Introduction
On Earth in 2055 and on Mars in 2259
A desperate and chilling message sent only to humans

The first science fiction novel by Wang Shufen, an author who has won the 'Hoseo Daegadog' award for two consecutive years, which selects excellent children's and youth books based on Taiwan's highest authority and history, and is greatly loved in Taiwan as well as in Korea, has been published.
The author's unique solid story and detailed descriptions, combined with his rich imagination, created the amazing work called "The Last One."

Mars in 2259 is paradise.
The temperature and humidity are perfectly maintained, and the sky is always clear and spotless.
In a world where there is no disease, no death, no sorrow, no distinction between superior and inferior, everyone has their learning and growth abilities controlled by a chip implanted in their brain.
However, M3 is particularly emotional and worries about himself as being inferior to his friends in many ways.

The Earth in 2055 is unstable.
In a world shrouded in smog, it is difficult to walk down the street without a gas mask, and people are gripped by fear as wars and terrorism occur all over the world.
Some of them leave Earth, where hope is fading, and head to Mars.
In despair, Sansha becomes absorbed in writing a novel, while also becoming captivated by a child who has engraved "The Last One" on his pencil case.
The shadow of death and apocalypse slowly falls over both worlds, and tremendous secrets and truths begin to reveal themselves to the two.

“What is your favorite thing to do?”
As Professor Eun turned on the computer, a young-looking Z42 appeared on the screen and asked:
was the computer lock password set by the professor.
I had to answer correctly to be able to run Z42.

So, this country has no shortage of food or clothing, and can send people on space trips at any time, but it doesn't have the ability to grow proper trees.
Should we call this fair or unfair?
--- p.63

A world that goes crazy day by day.
Because this kind of atmosphere lasted more than a day or two, many people gave up on life early.
But there were also people who had the 'ability' to escape this situation.
People at the top of the pyramid.
Those were the 52 people.
--- p.90~91

Oh, I don't know why I'm like this.
Is it because Mung-chun is so handsome? Is it because his blunt and cold expression is so charming? No.
Right now, everyone needs someone to pour their heart into.
Sansha concluded:
If we don't do this, how can we, Mom and Dad, and everyone else live in this smoggy world where everyone is suffering?
--- p.111

“Who created us? Was it God or the state?”
Professor Eun's eyes narrowed slightly and became unfocused.
It was as if the answer to my question lay somewhere far beyond space.
“That problem will never be solved.”
--- p.126

Is there another utopia in this world? A place where freedom and happiness coexist, and there is no war.
A place where I can go out without a mask, go into the forest anytime to breathe in the fresh air, and sleep comfortably in my own room, even if it's a small apartment.
Is there no such place? I'm not asking for much, but...

Sansha remembered the story of the 'last person' that Mengqun had told her.
Even if the Earth is destroyed, I hope someone comes and knocks...
--- p.182

I wish there were real people alive on Earth, who would know all these facts and put them all into writing.
We need to tell our story to many people.

Publisher's Review
Can science and technology save us?
The first science fiction novel by Wang Shufen, a master of youth fiction.

“The last person left on Earth was sitting alone in a room.
Then I heard a knock… … .”
Frederick Brown's "Knock," which is called the world's shortest science fiction novel, consists of just two sentences.
In 'The Last One' and 'The Knock', the reader glimpses both despair and hope.
Wang Shufen's science fiction novel, "The Last Man," also begins its story with a similar ending.

Author Wang Shufen, well known to domestic readers for her work “In the Beginning, It Was a Small Thing,” has published over 60 children’s and young adult works in Taiwan. She has been recognized for her work by winning prestigious children’s and young adult literature awards and Taiwan’s most prestigious “Hushu Dagu Literature Award,” and is also called Taiwan’s national author.
With its unique tight plot structure, solid story, detailed psychological portrayal, and three-dimensional and colorful character composition, it has consistently received love for its works that never leave a dull moment.

"The Last One" is author Wang Shufen's first science fiction novel, and is a captivating masterpiece that combines all of his strengths with an amazing imagination.
Set on a devastated Earth in 2055 and a chaotic Mars in 2259, this shocking and thrilling story unfolds.

Earth must leave, Mars is full of questions
An exciting story that crosses two worlds

If the day comes when we can no longer live on Earth and we are given the opportunity to live on Mars, what will we choose?

The Earth of 2055 depicted in 'The Last One' is in a desperate situation where it can no longer dream of the future due to climate change, environmental pollution, war, and terrorism.
As many people groan under the weight of disaster and suffering and give up on life, a faint ray of hope emerges from somewhere.
The 'Space Colony Project' is a ray of hope born from the combined brains of outstanding scientists and enormous funds.

Fifty-two people, who own half of the world's wealth, want to get off Earth and go to Mars as soon as possible.
And some scientists are secretly working on creating artificial humans, exploring new possibilities and ways of survival.
As all preparations are well underway, Sansha's parents also work hard to save money, hoping to one day send their daughter to Mars.
Twelve-year-old Sansha, who is watching the scene, thinks everyone is crazy.

Despite the desperate news she hears every day, Sansha writes every day.
Besides writing novels, there is something else that captures Sansha's heart.
The emotion that only humans can feel is ‘love.’
Sansha secretly develops feelings for the excited child who happened to sit next to her, the child who had engraved 'the last one' on his pencil case.
And the identity of the unusual child and the destination of the Earth running towards the end of the world are gradually revealed to Sansha.

Mars in 2259, where M3 lives, is a paradise free of worries and concerns.
The weather is perfectly controlled, the sky is always clear and blue.
Even if you fall and get hurt, if you receive reconstructive laser treatment, the wound will heal quickly and new skin will grow, and no one will die.
No one sheds tears, so they don't even know what it means.
Through the chip inserted into the brain, everyone's learning and growth ability is automatically controlled, so there is no distinction between superior and inferior.
You can travel to space anytime, and it's all free.
Living in such a world, M3 is always wondering.
Why isn't anyone happy?

The only person who understands and gives advice to M3, who is wondering what true happiness is, is Professor Eun.
M3 feels like a little monster born into the wrong world, less capable than his friends and more sentimental.
And I don't understand the countless people who tell themselves, "You're the only one who understands me."
Sometimes, I feel confused when unfamiliar memories come to mind that I feel like I've never experienced before.

One day, an unforgettable incident happens to M3, who keeps asking himself the question, “Who on earth am I?”
Professor Eun passed away.
In a world without death, M3 is overcome with shock and fear before he can even accept the unbelievable death he encounters for the first time.
There is only one M3 left in this world.

Who will decide the 'last' and the 'possibility'?
It's none other than 'me'

"The Last One" delicately connects the stories of Earth and Mars, two completely different time and space times, in 2055 and 2259, like warp and weft, drawing readers deep into the work.
Readers are sometimes amazed and sometimes astonished by the world of the near and distant future that the author has created, and they rush forward to the next chapter without hesitation.
And as we watch twelve-year-old Sansha, who is cast in the shadow of the apocalypse, and fifteen-year-old M3, who is left alone on Mars, we are forced to reflect on ourselves living today.
What kind of future are we, as 'humans', walking towards?

The world is changing at a breakneck pace.
Technology is rapidly advancing, and not only are we experiencing technological advancements in our daily lives, such as distance learning and autonomous driving, but also another dimension called virtual reality is gradually permeating our lives.
Advances in science and technology that surpass our imagination are also taking place without us even realizing it.
We also find hope in science and technology to protect us from rapid climate change, environmental pollution, disease and death.
At the same time, voices of concern about the increasing power of science and technology are growing louder.
In a rapidly changing world, there are people who cannot adapt and who are marginalized.
While war and terrorism threaten people's lives, unexpected threats like the coronavirus also emerge, shaking up everyone's lives.

We, who are blindly running towards tomorrow, we, who are mindlessly wandering through today, are briefly called out by the 'Last One'.
Now, with the question of where are you going?

The utopia that Sansha dreams of in 2055 is a place where freedom and happiness coexist and there is no war.
A place where I can go out without a mask, go into the forest anytime to breathe in the fresh air, and sleep comfortably in my own room, even if it's small.
Somehow it feels familiar.
So, what does the utopia we dream of look like? What kind of world do I truly want to live in? "The Last One" urges us not to be swept away by the world, not to try to adapt to its creation, but to consider where we stand and where we should take our steps.
In the morning, the sun will rise to start the day again.
And the future we will live in is getting one step closer.
So how should we live? Let's start with this question: "What is your favorite thing to do?"
