Book Introduction
The countdown to climate catastrophe has already begun!
A climate crisis sci-fi novel about four people responding to Earth's distress signals.

"One-Person Capsule" is a science fiction anthology written by four mid-career writers who, with their vivid imagination and sharp critical awareness, tackle the climate crisis we face today, as well as various other problems that could arise in the future.
Even though technology has advanced to the point where artificial intelligence, which has reached the point of singularity, has become the big leader of the climate management system, "Gaia's Choice" depicts the irony of humanity living a life regressing to old-fashioned methods in order to normalize the climate; "One-Person Capsule" contains the intimate confession of a child who was mobilized for the terraforming of Mars as a climate refugee with nowhere to turn and embarks on a life-threatening space journey to return to Earth, which has lost contact; "Cozzi" depicts the solidarity of children who live with virus detectors on their bodies in the near future after losing half the population due to a pandemic and witness the fabricated hopes and try to stand against them; and "In Search of Light" depicts a journey to find the last hope left for humanity, which is barely able to survive by going underground due to the sudden arrival of an ice age but is ultimately on the verge of extinction.
Four veteran writers have come together to discuss the climate crisis, each with their own unique perspectives. Their diverse stories raise questions about the future and direction of the Earth and humanity, while compellingly conveying the message that now is the last chance to save the planet.

In a future where the sudden arrival of an ice age has brought human extinction to the forefront,
The Prometheus Project, a quest for sunlight, begins! _〈In Search of Light〉

In addition to news about the coronavirus, there is news we hear every single day.
This is news about the 'abnormal weather phenomenon' that is occurring all over the world.
In North America, Russia, and India, unprecedented, murderous heat waves are raging, in Japan, sudden torrential rains have triggered landslides, and in the Sahara Desert and the Middle East, snow has fallen, sending temperatures below freezing.
We've heard the terms climate crisis and climate disaster so often that it's hard to even feel a sense of crisis.
We all know that this is not the last or the only time we will see such unpredictable and unpredictable weather.
Heat waves, droughts, heavy rains, landslides, fires, tsunamis, and ice ages, which once appeared only in disaster movies, are no longer fiction but a vivid reality facing us.
Warnings that extreme weather events due to global warming will become more intense and last longer have been consistently raised for decades.
There are even frequent predictions that extreme weather events will occur more frequently in the future and that numerous species will become extinct.
The problem is that climate change doesn't just make us feel uncomfortable and experience unusual weather; it also negatively impacts our quality of life.
Land erosion due to rising sea levels, increased epidemics and viral diseases, decreased food productivity, deepening poverty, creation of climate refugees, etc.
The problems that follow one after another are a disaster in themselves.
This is why we cannot dismiss Bill Gates' words: "Coronavirus is terrible, but climate change could be even worse."

Gaia's Choice: The Ark Project to Save Earth, and the Cold-Blooded Secret Hidden Within

Set in the near future, where "delaying the onset of a climate catastrophe as much as possible is humanity's greatest challenge," the story depicts humanity, facing the threat of mass extinction, choosing "Neo Gaia," an artificial intelligence that has reached a singularity, as the big leader of its climate management system.
In 2050, 70% of the world's living environment has been devastated by constant natural disasters, and 80% of the world's population is suffering from hunger and epidemic diseases.
Humanity, desperately trying to grasp at straws, accepts Neo Gaia's proposal and completely changes its lifestyle to one based on environmentally friendly methods.
A new era has begun, where cutting-edge digital technology and analog life coexist.
Twenty years later, the ecosystem is barely maintained, and humanity begins to escape famine and conflict.

The story begins with Theia, a nineteen-year-old girl who is the director of the United Nations organization and seems to have been born to help the Earth's environment, going on a business trip to the United States.
While the ostensible purpose of the business trip was to visit a vaccine development lab to express concern over news of a new virus that could threaten a pandemic, the hidden order was from the president to return home with a sample of a deadly virus being secretly developed with the goal of reclaiming the title of world power.
Even in a cold, unexpected situation, Teia manages to collect a virus sample with the help of her assistant. She finally finds relief in front of the president, but hears a horrifying story she could never have imagined.
What exactly is the super vaccine and the Ark Project, essential to protecting the Earth? By depicting humanity's fate teetering precariously under Neo Gaia's ruthless judgment, the film sharply criticizes humanity's actions in destroying and exploiting the planet, and contributing to its shortened lifespan.

〈Single-Person Capsule〉: Listening to the voices of the vulnerable, often forgotten in disaster situations.

This is a story about a future where numerous climate refugees, created by an abnormality in the Earth's mid-latitude atmosphere, are sent to the Mars terraforming project.
Seon and Ran, orphan refugees who met at a shelter in Seoul and grew to rely on each other like family, are classified by the AI human analyzer and sent to Mars.
In a world where pandemic fears have given way to hatred and distrust of climate refugees, there is no longer a place on Earth for refugees who are second-class citizens.
They survived 5 years, 3 months, and 26 days on Mars, a barren place where there seemed to be no hope, but the children did not suffer much because their memories of Earth were even more horrific.
However, after five months of no news from Earth, the Martian colonists begin to become uneasy.
In the midst of a sense of defeat and loss, of being completely abandoned and with only death left, a suggestion is made to select an advance team to go to Earth and assess the situation and ask for help.

Those who finally embark on the life-threatening journey back home board a single-person capsule and move closer to Earth when the old mothership runs out of fuel.
With the hope that when I wake up I will be on Earth.
Ran also sleeps and wakes up in the capsule repeatedly, trying to calm her mind, but her premonitions keep going in an uneasy direction.
Lying in a single-person capsule in the vastness of space, Ran-i, who was going back and forth between memories of the past she wanted to forget and the present situation that she could not believe, eventually ends up witnessing the reality of Earth that she never wanted to face.
This story explores humanity by focusing on the lives of the most vulnerable, marginalized, and abandoned in times of crisis like climate disaster.
It contains a poignant message that the only way to overcome the crisis is through solidarity based on love and faith in humanity.

"Cotchi" is a captivating adventure story about finding the truth in a hidden and manipulated reality.

It depicts a near-future society where half the population has been lost to a pandemic due to global warming, air pollution, and the spread of a virus.
Having suffered terrible losses from the onslaught of an ancient virus awakened by global warming, humanity struggles to regain a safe daily life using cutting-edge science and technology as its weapon.
The air is constantly purified using Air Clean Drone technology, and a revolutionary electronic sensor called 'Cochi' is installed in the nose that can detect viruses smaller than 1 micron.
Freed from the stifling and anxious life of wearing a gas mask, the freedom to breathe with one's own lungs and the right to bare one's face are restored, and society is filled with a renewed sense of hope and anticipation for the future, bringing a rare sense of vitality to the forefront.

However, when children around her, including her younger sister Hannah, who was equipped with a new product, suddenly collapse with symptoms of unknown cause and are taken to the Echo Center and quarantined, this incident begins to cause Joy to begin to doubt the vast and opaque quarantine system.
Moreover, when Su-ho, a thorn in Joy's side and a classmate who was thought to be enjoying the glory of his scientist father, a national hero, disappears, Eugene, who had always had a crush on Joy, asks Joy for help.
With the clues of the Kochi prototype left behind by Suho, Eugene's story, and the hacking of the Eco Center, the adults are quickly getting closer to the truth that has been hidden...
It criticizes the absurd and contradictory social system that is quick to conceal the truth due to mutual interests even in the face of a global disaster, while also captivatingly depicting the spirited actions of young people who choose to take action rather than succumb to manipulated hope.

In Search of Light: An indomitable journey to find the last hope in the face of human extinction due to the Ice Age.

Rather than getting hotter due to global warming, greenhouse gases block the atmosphere, blocking the sun's heat, and the Earth is in an ice age in an instant. This realistically depicts the area around Seoul.
The commotion of taking selfies with the glaciers floating down the Han River in the background is short-lived, but soon the power plants stop working, heating is cut off, and each country goes to war to steal resources and food, leading to mutual destruction.
Those who went underground to escape the cold and marauders barely managed to eke out a shabby existence, with only survival as their goal.

One day, when humanity is on the verge of extinction due to the absence of even newborn babies, Seung-hwan, a boy who cannot remember 'before winter', joins the 'Prometheus Project' to bring back sunlight, as per the will of his grandfather Jay, who was his only support.
Sebin, who must endure an unwanted marriage and a life-threatening childbirth if she remains in the settlement, joins Seunghwan's journey, and the two meet Grandpa Lee Shin, who will be their guide, and begin their journey.
After a series of twists and turns, including being attacked by a pack of cannibalistic dogs and being caught in a blizzard caused by a giant snow pillar collapsing, they finally arrive at the National Fusion Research Complex.
However, the project faces enormous difficulties even before it begins due to an attack by a group of marauders who were pursuing them.
Will humanity ever be able to return to the surface of the earth in search of sunlight again? This story vividly portrays, almost like a documentary, the hardships and adversities that could be endured during the Ice Age.
It carries a desperate message that if we do not properly confront the reality of the climate crisis, which we have been ignoring or dismissing even now, we may face an even greater disaster in the future.

“Humans have made terrible mistakes, but they will eventually find hope again.”

The power and charm of science fiction is to summon the present through the future and to make us look at the place where we stand in an unfamiliar way.
《One-Person Capsule》 also transparently illuminates not only the future but also our reality based on plausible imagination.
The bleak future depicted in the work is not the result of wild imagination, but rather a thorough reflection of reality, making it all the more poignant to read.
But this book doesn't simply maximize anxiety and fear by depicting a dystopian future.
When everyone says it's the end, the story's protagonists' steadfastness in finding hope and moving forward again resonates deeply and offers meaningful realizations.
The message is that we must move towards hope, not despair, and create a tomorrow that is better than the one that has passed.

Above all, "One-Person Capsule" is based on the sobering recognition of reality that, as author Kim So-yeon said, "climate change is not a distant future landscape" and that "predictions of climate disaster have become today's news," and is filled with an earnest voice to protect us all from the predicted disaster and a wish to give children a safe and good future.
It is about listening to the marginalized voices, those most vulnerable and easily forgotten in the face of great tragedy, and whispering that now is the time for all of us to endure this discomfort together.
