New work by Lee Hee-young, author of "Paint"
An 18-year-old son and a 34-year-old mother
There is an unspoken truth between them!

Author Lee Hee-young won the Changbi Youth Literature Award for her novel, Paint, which explores the meaning of family in a new way.
This time, he returned with a work that asks about the 'meaning of ordinary'.
"Ordinary Sunset" is the story of Choi No-eul, an eighteen-year-old who dreams of an ordinary life but is shaken by the unexpected.
Noeul lives alone with her mother, who runs a small workshop.
The mother, who gave birth to Noeul at the age of seventeen, is already young at her age.
There is a younger man who has been looking after such a mother for 5 years. He is Seongbin, the older brother of her best friend Seongha.
At first, his mother strongly pushes Seongbin away, but as he continues to wait, she gradually opens her heart.
The sunset is not pretty to Seongbin.
I hope my mom meets a 'normal person', not a young man just starting out in society.
He asks His Majesty for help in preventing the two from meeting, but His Majesty scolds him instead.
When Sungha asks, “Who do you think is an ordinary person?”, Noeul falls into deep thought… … .

The novel contains the colorful stories of Noeul's best friends Seongha and Dongwoo, as well as her mother, Seongbin, and Seongha's father.
Through this, we ask and answer what society considers normal and what the standards set by the world are from the perspectives of various characters.
As I follow No-eul's story, I will be able to reflect on what I think the average and the ordinary mean.

Into the book
While I am over 180 cm tall, my mother is small, less than 160 cm tall.
I wonder how a big guy like me could emerge from that strong, blue body that looks like it could collapse at any moment.
My mom was so small and thin, so why am I so big-boned? A wave of doubt began to creep in.
“I think getting married early is really a good thing.
Dad must be big.
My mother was so small and thin.
I wish.
He has a pretty face like his mother and a good physique like his father.
“The student has inherited all the good qualities of his parents.”
"hey……."
"okay.
Buy this, it's super lightweight.
“It’s really light.”
I quickly stopped her, but this time, Jihye Choi wasn't the type to just let it go.
“I’m not married.
And our son doesn't have a father."
Unlike the smiling mother, the clerk looks like he's about to burst into tears.
Even if the winter jumper being sold is ultra-light, there is no need for the seller's mouth to be light as well.

No matter how much I said no, it was useless.
Friendship cannot exist between men and women.
Why do they so arbitrarily believe their own thoughts to be true? When His Holiness said he had a crush on a girl at school, I could confidently swear to God.
Not a single cell in the onion skin was shaken.
No, rather, I was glad.
Now I won't have to answer calls from that guy who whines, "Come out now, I'm bored," all the time.
That would be 100% the same for that guy, Your Majesty.
“Ah! I feel so good after having a good bowel movement this morning.
You finally came out after three days.
“After all, Cheonggukjang Hwan is the best.”
Wouldn't you be able to understand it if you looked at how they tell you everything, even the daily life that you weren't even curious about?
They say that guys with older or younger sisters tend to have less fantasies about women, but as an only child, I can't help but agree with that statement so strongly.

Mom ate the egg soup.
Once a month, my mother visits a shelter for single mothers to teach handmade accessory craft classes.

“Shouldn’t you be raising competitors like that?”
My mother's wise answer to my question was this.
“That is the goal and the dream.
Making everyone there my competitor.
“That’s how we all live each day, sometimes ahead, sometimes behind.”
They lived each day tenaciously, according to their mother's wishes.
There were also cases where someone gave up their child.
But no one in the world has the right to criticize them.
Because there are people who really deserve to be criticized and pointed at.
This is why I don't ask about my father.
I never wanted to know how old he was, what he looked like, or where he was from.
If I knew, it was obvious that all the men of that age would look like the same person.

“What do you think is normal?”
Dongwoo spit out his green cola at a word he said without thinking.
I thought I was eating too quickly.
I handed the coughing guy a tissue.
Seeing you cough for a long time, it looks like you have a cold sore that is stuck firmly in your throat.
“Are you okay? Why are you eating so quickly, so unusually?”
Dongwoo waved his hands.
I'm saying that since I paid dearly for eating in a hurry, let's stop talking about that.
I said ordinary, but the guy drank his cola in a way that was not ordinary at all.
He had been coughing so hard that his eyes were bloodshot and red.
If you drink the wrong cola once, you might end up linking arms with the Grim Reaper and going on a boat ride.
“So, what do you think is ordinary?”
The same question came up again.
The image of my mother and older brother came to mind.
Six years older and younger.
Yes, it is definitely possible these days.
In fact, isn't it too common for a man to be that much older? Being the same zodiac sign is the norm, and it's not uncommon for there to be a difference even beyond that.
It doesn't really matter that my mother is six years older than my brother.
But my mother clearly has me, and my brother clearly has Seongha.
No one around them would agree with the two people's teaching materials.

After winter, a new spring will come.
Some people may feel the early spring, while others may say it is still winter.
During the changing of seasons, you can see a variety of clothing on the streets.
I'm talking about people still wearing padded jackets and pastel-toned spring jackets.
But no one thinks the other person's clothes are strange.
Because the transitional period is the fifth season when all clothes are suitable.
I hope the world becomes a society that respects diversity, like the changing seasons.
It's a world where both thick, neutral-colored padding and a fluttering, pastel-toned spring jacket are the right answer.

Publisher's Review
“Is there only one answer in life, like a multiple choice question?”
It's enough, even if it's ordinary or not ordinary
A story for all of us

"An Ordinary Sunset" is a story about how we should accept the standards set by the world.
In the novel, Noeul ponders what ordinariness is.
We endlessly question whether the world's standards of normalcy and average are truly appropriate and whether we should live up to them.
Not only the main character No-eul, but also Seong-ha and Dong-woo question the prejudices that are strangling them and decide to stand tall as 'the person they want to be' rather than as the world demands of them.
As they each ponder the events given to them, they gradually grow into new forms.

The story is told from the first-person perspective of Noeul, but it flows in a colorful way with three-dimensional characters and their own stories.
The story unfolds in a multitude of colors, as if light passing through a frame.
This ultimately means that we are not one color, but rather many branches of ourselves.
Just as we cannot apply the standards of ordinary and average to the circumstances given to No-eul, everything we experience is also special.

They say there are no right answers in life, but people constantly strive to reach the standard.
Going to a good university, getting a job at a good company, getting married at the right time, and having children.
If you deviate even slightly from the standards set by the world, people look at you with a puzzled look.

Like Noel, who says, “Maybe I’m still looking for the ordinary,” we too may be looking at the world through our own standards, knowingly or unknowingly.
It could be gender, age, occupation, wealth, or anything else.
Just as No-eul, after much thought, finally casts off the very definition of ordinary, I hope readers will also break free from the shackles of the world's standards and realize that we are all fulfilling beings in our own right.
