Self-Leadership: The Inner Strength Essential for Teenagers

South Korean teenagers just live their lives being swept away by what they are told at school, what they are told at cram schools, and what their parents tell them to do.
I'm competing fiercely with my friends and improving my academic performance, but I'm at a loss as to why I have to live like this, which university and department to go to, and what to do next.
It's just blindly rushing forward, following what others do and what they tell you to do, without even being given the opportunity to think about and explore what you really like and want to do.
Even if they somehow manage to get into college, they are unable to adapt properly because it wasn't what they wanted to do in the first place, and many end up wandering late in life as adults.
What is most important during adolescence to think about and judge one's dreams and life is 'self-leadership'.
In modern society, there is an emphasis on leadership that leads the community in the right direction, but in fact, what should take priority is 'self-leadership', the ability to properly lead one's own life. In one's teenage years, the golden age of life, one must learn the courage to design one's own life, make decisions, and take responsibility for it.

Author Baek Su-yeon, also known as "Dream Teacher," is a youth leader at the Hwaseong City Youth Training Center and a youth leadership expert with both theoretical and practical experience who has personally planned and taught "youth self-leadership" education in the field for over 10 years. She has published this book for troubled youth.
This book provides specific theories and examples of how to cultivate the self-esteem, creativity, self-direction, resilience, and collaboration necessary to become a self-leader.
In particular, the author solicited case studies from youth across the country for this book, and hopes to inspire many readers through the stories told by 34 friends who served as youth mentors.
This book will provide solid and useful know-how not only to teenagers who are curious about how other friends are pursuing their dreams, but also to teachers, instructors, and parents of adolescent children.

Into the book
The true master of my life is the person who leads my life on my own, that is, a 'self-leader'.
When I lead my own life according to my own will, rather than being passively led by others, I can feel true happiness and live as the master of my own life.
To protect that right, you must develop a sense of ownership.
I call this sense of ownership 'self-leadership.'
Self-leadership is the power to protect oneself, to love oneself, and to live as oneself.
What we desperately need now is not to live up to someone else's expectations, but to become our own 'self-leaders', without the need to prove ourselves to anyone.
--- From the "Prologue"

Taemin didn't have a dream until middle school.
The teachers all told him to find his dream quickly, but Taemin didn't want to find his dream yet.
'In this age of 100-year lifespans, you're telling me to decide on my dream at the tender age of fourteen?'
I didn't understand.
People often say that just thinking about dreams makes your heart race, but there wasn't anything that really made my heart race.
Taemin was an ordinary middle school student who was not particularly good at anything and got bored easily, so he had no hobbies or interests to show off.
--- From "I want to be an influencer"

“I really want to do what I love, but my parents are against it, saying that it’s an unstable job and that doing something I love won’t pay the bills.
yo. this.
I'm so torn between whether I should continue doing what I love or face reality.
What should I do?
There are many young people who are frustrated and struggling with these concerns.
South Korea is called a 'correct answer society', where everyone has a set answer.
Follow the path.
Even children who wanted to sing or who loved philosophy, when they become adults, at some point they compromise with reality and follow the answers set by society rather than their own will.
Even if there is something else I particularly want to do, I tend to choose a stable job.
---From "What's Wrong with Being a Geek?"

Eunseo, who had her eyes opened to physics, set out to find the intersection between physics and music.
If I couldn't give up both, I decided to try to merge my scientific brain and my artistic desires so that they would shine brighter together rather than causing conflict.
When I connected the two things I truly loved, my curiosity about music, waves, and vocalizations continued to pour in.
The more this happened, Eunseo expanded her knowledge by reading various books and papers.
He also recorded his own singing voice and examined its waveform, spectrum, and Fourier transform results.
It was a beautiful moment where intellectual curiosity and love of music met.

Publisher's Review
“What on earth is self-leadership?”
Self-esteem, creativity, self-direction, resilience, and collaboration
Inner strength is essential for young people pursuing their dreams!

A friend who has something they really want to do but has no choice but to dream of becoming a civil servant due to their parents' opposition. A friend who is trembling with fear and anxiety because they are the only one without a dream while all the kids around them are running excitedly to find their dreams. A friend who is at a loss as to how they can possibly decide on a dream when they are neither good at nor particularly fond of anything... Life as a teenager in Korea is truly difficult.
Author Baek Su-yeon suggests 'self-leadership' to comfort the hearts of such youth and provide them with a clearer direction.
To live a life where we are the main characters, not one swayed by others, we must all become 'self-leaders.'

To cultivate 'self-leadership,' a core competency and strong inner strength essential to youth, five elements are necessary.
This book contains specific definitions and examples of 'self-esteem', which is loving and believing in oneself, 'creativity', which is fostered through fun and enjoyable play, 'self-directedness', which is knowing how to make and take responsibility for even small decisions, 'resilience', which is getting back up and jumping forward even after being frustrated and falling, and 'collaboration', which is experiencing achievement by working in harmony with others.

Vivid case studies and interviews with 34 youth mentors.
Even Dream Teacher's self-action plan!

In January 2018, a noteworthy article was posted on the author's blog, "On the Day Baek Su-yeon's Dream Shines."
It was an article openly recruiting protagonists to appear in the third book.
We are collecting stories from those who want to share their experiences with their youth friends and find comfort together.
Teenage friends, who were wondering if their ordinary experiences could be of help to someone, began to gather courage one by one and tell their stories to the author, and thus, “It’s Okay, I’m the Main Character of My Life” was completed.

Hoi, the CEO of 'Kim Hoi's People' who has already registered as a self-employed person despite being a high school student; Purmae, a history buff who dreams of becoming the head of the Cultural Heritage Administration after being shocked and saddened by the fire that destroyed National Treasure No. 1 Sungnyemun; Subin, who proudly presented a letter of intent to drop out to her parents and studies while managing a busier schedule than anyone else; Daeyong, who dreamed of becoming a shooter but gave up and was frustrated, but ended up living a different life instead... The 34 teenagers each had different situations and concerns, but they had one thing in common.
He is a 'self-leader' who has overcome hardships and frustrations and is still walking step by step to find his dream.
It's not because I'm particularly good.
I just decided to be the main character of my own life.

If you want to make the stories of the friends in the book your own, pay attention to Dream Teacher's self-action plan.
Small action plans that may not seem like much, but can be consistently implemented, such as checking your self-esteem index, finding a verb-type dream rather than a noun-type dream, conducting a self-interview, and finding your own small happiness, are presented.
After reading the theory of self-leadership and the examples of your friends, and putting an action plan into practice, you will finally find yourself becoming a "self-leader."
