Description
Book Introduction
Park Hyun-sook, author of the "Suspicious Series," unleashes the magic of a true storyteller!
“There is nothing scarier than the fact that you are dead

“It is time that cannot be turned back.”

What would you do if you only had a week?
Time, once it has passed, can never be brought back.
When time stays with me, I do my best while I am within that time.
If you live each day as if it were your last, with an open mind, you can live a life without regrets!

"Gumiho Restaurant" is a young adult novel by Park Hyun-sook, a writer whose storytelling skills have already been recognized in numerous works.
As expected from bestselling children's author Park Hyun-sook, known for her innocent sensibility and outstanding imagination, "Gumiho Restaurant" also immerses readers from the very beginning.

The novel was inspired by a child from the author's school days.
Regret for losing the child I thought would always be there in the KAL 858 bombing and for letting the opportunity to become close to him slip away.
I wanted to turn back time, but I confessed in this novel that I could neither go back to the time that had passed nor turn back time.

Two people who suddenly died one day.
Before crossing the River of Oblivion, he meets Seoho in Middle-earth and exchanges a sip of his unquenchable blood for forty-nine days, returning to his former world.
What's the story between the man who was a hotel chef and Do-young? The story of the man who desperately wants to live to be 49 days old and Do-young who doesn't mind leaving this world a little early unfolds, piqueing curiosity.

Love and obsession, people sharing their hearts, time to build friendships, and the meaning of family were things the two had never properly seen while alive.
I thought it was love, but to the other person it was violence, and I just didn't realize the true feelings of my brother and grandmother, whom I considered to be worse than other family members.
Doyoung, who always felt alone, wants to confirm his friend Suchan's feelings and tell him that it wasn't because of him that he died.
I am now beginning to feel emotions, regrets, and sorrows that I never felt when I was alive.

The relationship between Doyoung and his friend Suchan is very similar to that of the child in the author Park Hyeon-suk's memories from her school days.
It was nice that Do-young and Suchan were able to confirm each other's feelings, even if it was late, and the author said that by letting them know the true feelings of the grandmother and Do-su, he was able to feel lighthearted as if he had finally completed a long-time homework assignment.
It's amazing how a single motif can be turned into such an exciting story. This novel makes you feel the true power of storytelling, making it impossible to put the book down once you start reading.

Into the book
According to Seoho, even if someone is diagnosed as dead, there is a chance that they will come back to life before crossing the river.
People who have died and come back to life, even though there is no medical explanation for it, are the people who have barely managed to hold on to a slim chance.
What I am saying is that the stories of people who died and came back to life that I saw on overseas topics are not just made up stories.
Everyone has a chance to survive.
Seoho asked him to sell that possibility to him.

“Anyway, the probability of coming back to life is as small as invisible dust.
Instead of hanging on to it, you'd be much more profitable if you sold me the odds.
I guarantee you a time of forty-nine days.
You can stay in this world for that long.
The price is only a sip of hot blood.
You make your own judgments and the decisions are entirely yours.
Are you heartbroken by an unexpected breakup? Is there someone you'd like to see? Buying forty-nine days isn't easy.
“Meeting me was the luckiest of lucks.” (Page 9)

“A person’s life is not something that can be taken lightly.
You all have the same age, gender, and personality, but your faces will be different.
Please don't throw a tantrum and ask to stay with your original face.
I say it again, it's impossible for me.
It's not something that can be solved by forcing it.
It's just energy consumption.
Where else would you like to stay besides home? I'll listen to that.
“You can say goodbye to the people you want without necessarily having to take their faces home.”
At Seoho's words, the old man jumped up.
He said that he had to return to his own face.
Only after the weary and exhausted Seoho told him to quickly cross the river of oblivion and pretend it never happened did the old man give up.

“I want to open a restaurant where I can see the bus stop and subway station.
When I can't go home, a restaurant is the most comfortable place for me.
I'm a chef.
“Can you do that?”
Seoho nodded at the old man's words.

"you?"
Seoho looked at me.

"well."
There was no place to go.
“If you have nowhere to go, stay with me.
It's better to have two.
Even if this is the wrong choice, it is better to have two than one.” (Main text, pages 16-17)

“Let’s start a food business.”
"yes?"
“Let’s start a food business.
There are so many cooking ingredients that you can make any dish.
So, what I'm saying is, let's do business.
“I’ll make the food, so you clean the restaurant and serve.”
“Why do you have to work so hard? What are you going to do with the money you earn?”
“I’m not doing this to make money.”
"sure?"
“I thought about it carefully, and it seems like that’s the only way.
What other way to draw people into a restaurant without going outside is to make and sell food? I mean, I'm a pretty good chef, after all.
People who have tasted the food I make almost always become addicted.
It will soon become a popular restaurant and people will be waiting in line.
If I do that, the person I need to meet will come.
That guy is a gourmet.
Especially since I'm used to the taste of my food.
I'm a person who isn't satisfied with just any food.
I will definitely come find you.
“Yeah, that’s the best way.”
The man got up from his seat and went to the kitchen.
The man's hands became busy opening the refrigerator and checking inside.
I was curious about who the man wanted to meet, who he absolutely had to meet.
But the old man who always says that we have 49 days to talk slowly will not tell me that.
(Pages 34-35)

“Parents, there’s no such thing.”
"okay?"
The old man stopped cutting the green onions.
“My mother ran away from home when I was four because my father beat her so much.
Since there has been no contact since then, I don't know if he is alive or dead.
Even if he's alive, I don't really want to see him.
I don't remember it because it happened when I was four, but my dad told me about it.
Isn't that funny? It's not like I'm bragging about beating someone up and kicking them out.
My father drank too much and became sick, and he passed away when I was in the fourth grade.
So, you might be wondering, who did I live with? I lived with my grandmother.
My dad was married once before he married my mom, and he had a son from that marriage.
He's five years older than me, but he's a total punk.
He is a person who only thinks about spending money and not about making money.
Hitting and swearing at every opportunity is the norm.
Grandma is no different.
He gets angry easily and always says things like "I'd rather disappear from your sight".
I was my grandmother and my brother's drummer.
“A drum that you beat to vent your anger.”
A relationship based on love? We don't have that in our house.
“I don’t want to see my grandmother or my brother again.
If I meet my grandmother, it will be a big problem.
If he stole Suchan's scooter and got into an accident, the scooter would have been destroyed and his grandmother would have had to pay all the money.
“Oh my, the day I meet my grandmother is the day I’ll be destroyed.”
I shook my head.
I'm still going crazy over my grandmother's temper.
The old man looked at me blankly and listened to the story.
Oops, I just said I stole the scooter.

Publisher's Review
"The Gumiho Restaurant" is a novel about a child who believed he was no ordinary child, but who becomes a writer and tells a story he had kept hidden for a long time.
(…)

I created an intermediary world between this world and the afterlife in my novel, “The Gumiho Restaurant.”
It's a space where lucky people might stop by.
But not everyone can stop by.
The protagonist of this book was lucky enough to stop by here.

If death were to come to me today, would I not regret it? Would I not yearn for the past? Would I not lament, wishing I could turn back time? Unfortunately, that would be impossible.
When time stays with me, I do my best while I am there.

Life is not given, it is created.
What kind of life you will have is up to you.
Time flies! Are we letting it pass too easily? Are we too firmly convinced that tomorrow will come, that the day after tomorrow will come?
It is time to reflect on whether we have forgotten that nothing lasts forever.

I hope that readers of this book will love their lives more and treat those around them with sincerity.
I hope you create your own life wisely.
Realize that happiness is always nearby, waiting for you to reach out!
