Publisher's Review
Mini-interview with writer Chae In-young
▶Please introduce yourself briefly and provide your resume.
hello.
I am Chae In-young, a mother of a 24-year-old baby and the owner of the Red Umbrella blog.
I work as a data analyst at a financial company, and after giving birth, I started making baby food while on maternity leave.
We've compiled our experience and know-how into a book, "Red Umbrella's Soy Milk Maker Baby Food Recipe Book: Ready in 30 Minutes!"
▶What prompted you to publish this book? I'm also curious about when you first realized you wanted to become a writer.
The process of making baby food easily and simply using a soy milk maker, as well as the trial and error, was written down in detail and kindly on the Red Umbrella blog.
I wrote this in the hopes that my experiences will be helpful to other mothers and fathers of babies, taking the time to write about them while raising them.
Since the end of last year, the number of views has skyrocketed, and currently exceeds 15,000. Comments have started appearing suggesting that I should write a book on baby food.
For me, who had no experience or knowledge in publishing, raising a young baby was a difficult situation.
I thought, how can I make a book? That's ridiculous.
After much deliberation, I decided to take on the challenge of publishing it early this year.
I'm not a famous parenting blogger or YouTuber, so when I asked a publisher to publish my book, I was rejected as expected and was about to give up.
After two months of deliberation, I decided to give POD self-publishing a try.
▶How long did it take from the conception of the book to the final manuscript, and what was the most enjoyable or most difficult part of the process?
It took about 4 months in total, including 2 months from the time I decided to take on the challenge of publishing the book and 2 months from the time I planned the book to the time I finished it.
It wasn't easy to make up my mind to do that.
It took two months to gather the book content, plan the table of contents, write the manuscript, create templates, edit photos and text, finish the manuscript, design the cover, and write the front and back flaps.
We also conducted a test of the collection.
I started planning the book when my baby was 9 months old, and I wrote the book while making the post-weaning food.
I even took the 30 minutes while the soy milk maker was making baby food to write a book.
It was very difficult and challenging to have to create the entire book from start to finish while raising a young baby.
I was able to run to publication with the determination to do it before being reinstated.
There were days when I couldn't even touch a single page of the book because I was busy raising my children.
I was always short on time and energy due to raising my children, so after work, I cut down on my nighttime sleep, put the baby to a nap, and sat down in front of the computer with my exhausted body to write and edit books.
My spouse took care of the baby after work so I could write the book, and as a result, we didn't have much time to talk to each other.
I was so happy to finish publishing the book within the target period by concentrating as much as possible in the time given to me, and to introduce the book to guests at the baby's first birthday party.
It also received a lot of applause.
▶Due to the nature of the book, you must have had to use a lot of photos and images in addition to text. What part did you pay the most attention to during this process?
Yes, the Word and Hangul file manuscript templates provided by Bookcube are suitable for writing text-based manuscripts such as essays and novels.
I had to find a way to put a lot of photos together and edit them.
Since my book is a recipe book, it contains a lot of pictures.
It was difficult to find similar cases in Bookuk.
I searched the Internet for related information and blogs, and although it wasn't the exact same case, I found an example of making a picture book using the Canvas program.
It was my first time using Canva, so I had a lot of difficulties, but I gradually got used to it and created my own template for making recipe books.
If you're publishing a book like mine, with lots of photos and text, I recommend Canva Pro.
It is also useful for creating detailed images of covers and book introductions.
After completing the draft, it was also helpful to order a copy of the book and check the actual printing condition.
I actually received the book and needed to edit the size and condition of the photos and text.
▶What's the most important message you want to convey to readers in this book? And where do you think readers will find the most helpful?
I want to tell you that making baby food is easy and not difficult.
You can easily and conveniently make everything from early weaning food to later weaning food using a soy milk maker.
Working moms, working dads, new cooks, and new dads can all learn quickly and easily! With numerous photos and helpful explanations, you can apply it right away.
▶Please introduce your favorite passage from the book.
I would appreciate it if you could also tell me the reason.
I like the phrase, “Every day is sincere, but life as a whole is” from critic Lee Dong-jin’s book, “Night is a Book.”
I came to understand that we can control one day, but not our entire lives, and that if we just live honestly, the results will naturally flow.
I tend to try to accomplish what I can each day.
In Viktor Frankl's 'Man's Search for Meaning', he said, 'Everything can be taken from a man, but one thing only you can never take from him.
I also like the phrase, 'It is the freedom to choose one's attitude and one's own way toward a given situation.'
It was impressive that even in the harsh environment of the concentration camp, the inmates were able to decide their own attitude.
While raising a young baby, I think it helped me achieve my goal and determination to publish a book on baby food in my own way.
▶How did you feel when you saw your completed book? I'm also curious about the reactions of those around you.
When I received my completed baby food book, which was born with my baby, I was both nervous and excited.
And I was happy when I published the book around my baby's first birthday and gave it to him.
I wanted to give the book as a birthday present.
Many of my blog readers have been asking me when the book will be published, and I'm glad I was able to keep that promise.
I think many people around me responded with wonder and admiration, saying that it was amazing how I could write a book while raising a baby who wasn't even one year old.
As a mother of a fellow baby, I've heard a lot of people say I'm rooting for you and that you're awesome.
I feel rewarded when people tell me that they are getting help making baby food by reading books.
▶Please let us know if you have any other plans for publication in the future.
As you become a mother, we are planning a healing coloring book for parenting.
This is a coloring book for mothers who can enjoy a cup of coffee and relax during their free time while raising their children.
I would like to create a series based on the growth stages of my baby, from newborn to elementary school student.
I'm studying in my spare time to utilize Midjourney AI.
And starting in July, I plan to live in Sapporo, Japan with my baby for two months.
I want to create memories with my family that I can cherish for the rest of my life.
It will be a challenging new experience ahead of my reinstatement, and I'd like to publish a travel book that covers everything from the preparation process to my daily life there.
I'm thinking about working with my spouse and co-authoring a book.
